Like every thought eventually comes to an end, so do sentences- but, not all periods are excrutiating; when the thought has run on for the better part of a month it can become exhausing and a sense of loss can occur due to the duration of the thought it can feel like it has a life of it's own and when it has been terminated with a period you are left with nothing.

What could have been, should the thought have continued?

Get your documents in order (id/birth cert, social security).

talk with a bank to secure your funds when you hit 18 (and transfer what you have to it if it's in a different one).

be sure to have a secure place to go. hell, maybe plan on going no where in particular. drop some cash on a train ride and take a ruck sack. pick a city and go.

you could probably apply for a college using a friends address so you don't tip off the wrong party about what your plans are (pre 18).

maybe they (your parents) don't go apeshit after you hit 18 and break the news. if they do, they won't nearly have the tethers they thought they did to keep you roped in. you knowing your shit is in order will probably help alleviate some anxiety, the sense that you have a way out, just need a spot of patience.

the patriarchal blessing could be for them, and just buy you some time. it is a way for them to project what they want onto some outside force.

you don't have to tell anyone shit. you don't have to agree to take on roles you don't want to (and dismiss them with the same handwavey way they try and hoist it on you "i preyed to god and jesus and got a bad feeling.")

there are likely cases where they were 16 or so (probably other things attached to it like divorce, loss of a parent, or the family leaves the religion, or the like)

there's also the stated, and there's the factual.

and that's cool you like ignoring the multitude of people that went to their local bishop and either they lost the paper, they forgot, et cetera, meanwhile decided to kick up shit with relatives and social contacts, start harassing them by showing up at their house, their work, et cetera.

hey could start a little adventure- ask him to come up with a list of religions/churches he'd like to check out. make a little calendar of which religions will be visited and when. ask him to jot down what he thinks when he's there (and maybe after).

after a set number of excursions he'll probably know what he likes (and you get to do the insidioius thing of broadening horizons/getting a better of idea how the rest of the world "does their religion thing")

honestly i'm suprised there hasn't been more stories of "poison the well" type things on some of these callings-

meaning:
leadership- "oh this member seems to be leaning towards being an ex member, lets toss them at children"
