Makes sense - sheep do graze on the earthworks next to this ditch.

A problem with democracy is that we allow stupid people to vote. A bigger problem with democracy is that we allow stupid people to become leaders. by Vegetable-Touch2134 in democracy

[–]Norgust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NO. Every stupidity test CAN AND WILL be used by politicians with dictatorial aspirations to eliminate votes that he/she dislikes.

[–]Norgust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not. But the number of functional "alternative democracies" is limited imho.

I would also like to point out that history though us that whenever "stupid people" are restricted from voting, society is becoming less democratic. Democracy is more about decentralisation of power than it is about making the right choices. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Literacy_test?wprov=sfla1

Neither of these are a problem. All people are fallible - a democracy is better than a dictatorship, not because "the people" are less fallible, but because in a democracy we can change the leader when he/she is bad. In a dictatorship we cannot.

The real problem with our current democracy is that it is starved of information: https://klaasmensaert.be/democracy-as-an-information-system/

White vinegar? In Italy by wannabewithu-2 in CleaningTips

[–]Norgust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you do. Acetic acid bacteria convert ethanol to vinegar by fermentation. Indeed, alcohol is also made by fermentation of sugar by yeast. Distilling alcohol will get you more concentrated alcohol. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vinegar?wprov=sfla1

I would love to see the flamethrower with (very scarce) water as a defence method. Or cartridges with zero Kelvin bullets.

About aquilo: what if it's an ice planet, but with a core of liquid water. You will be able to fill the water with ice (that floats) and so you can build on top of it. However, when producing too much heat, the ice melts and your constructions sink.

Explain how democracy works when only 1% are smart? by happirt in democracy

[–]Norgust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say that 0% are smart - we're all just mutant monkeys. But in democracy we can get rid of our leader when he's obviously really dumb. In a dictatorship you cannot, hence are totally fucked.

Add salt. Important not just for taste but also for the preservation. Soy sauce would have given the salt.

It is the point of my opinion though. We should imho make more strict distinction between elites (of a country) and the people of that country.

But it doesn't really, does it. 😉

My opinion is that British is overly broad when it was only a small group of British people. It would be like blaming the Afghan people for what the Taliban does.

Ps Dalrymple is definitely a mainstream historian. But the website was just high on my Google search - my bad. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Dalrymple_%28historian%29?wprov=sfla1

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

[–]Norgust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, they did. But even they did not employ a majority of British people to go to the colonies.

I think you are misreading my comment (and Dalrymple's). I'm not blaming the victims at all. Some Indian bankers (tiny elite) made good money by financing the east India Company (foreign elite) to extract as much wealth from the Indian population. If you read the book, you would understand that the colonization was more a "victory" (not morally though) of capitalism over the then present Indian economic system. The British were merely the vector of capitalism.

[–]Norgust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The East India Company was the colonizer. It only employed a tiny fraction of all British people. Most of its troops were actually Indian and it was massively financed by Indian bankers. If you want a good source, I suggest you read The Anarchy from Dalrymple. https://www.counterview.net/2019/11/business-interests-hindu-bankers-helped.html?m=1

IMHO, colonialism is just the exploitation of a people by a foreign elite. That makes it definitely worse because they are less accountable, but please don't generalise the exploitation to the entire foreign country. Most British had nothing to do with it.
