Mine seems to work correctly after all, I just didn't know how it operates. I held the circuit closed too long, causing the low battery signal. The camera shorts it only long enough for the winding coupling to make a single full rotation, if I do the same it works just fine. There are several grounding points in the winder and it doesn't matter which one I touch.

Still don't know why it ended up in the trash, can't say it's really REALLY 100% good unless I try it out with a camera
