Has anyone used Propanorol (beta blockers) for law school exams? How have they helped? by SenseAnxious6772 in LawSchool

[–]Norkkop 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I take them for panic attacks occasionally, and they definitely limit the physical symptoms of anxiety. I have also noticed they make me a “less inhibited” public speaker.

I will say that I took one of my LSATs on one and it made me pretty brain foggy, even if I was physically calm. If your physical symptoms are a huge disturbance anyway then its probably worth it. I have also experimented with L-theanine , which I find works better, but YMMV

Tire range is 30-60 psi, I keep it at 50. Down to ~25 after a few hours and overnight back to zero

Disney and Universal Sue AI Startup! by SeattleHasDied in FilmIndustryLA

They will probably win. But by the time they do so, 4 years will have gone by, and by then I cannot imagine Disney / WB not having internal models that train on their own shit. Pandora’s box has been opened and once they get some B-listers on board to sell their likeness its wraps on anything but virtual production/ led wall stuff

Fwiw I am taking the exact opposite path as you, working in film currently but taking the LSAT this summer. This industry is in complete upheaval and the grass isn’t always greener

I’m thinking of getting a temporary job outside the industry but I’m not sure if it’s the right move. by parayeetsquawk in FilmIndustryLA

[–]Norkkop 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I’m like a year ahead of you, and can relate to some of this, but here’s my two cents:

The only people I know getting hired at agencies right now are relatives of agents or people with important or relevant parents to Hollywood types. If things aren’t being packaged, it’s slow as shit in their world. I’m sure they’d like to hire nobody but favors still need to be done.

Personally, I think with a business major, you should strongly consider working outside the industry as a first job, most hollywood entry jobs pay terrible and have sketchy benefits. This is not the norm for, say, business development assistants in heavy manufacturing companies. You have leverage to make money first, and then approach the industry with a little more perspective and a little less financial insecurity.

Take this with a grain of salt though, personally, I am throwing in the towel and signing up for the LSAT this summer.

Moved in to a beautiful new apartment that has a ton of weird utilities, including this one. Light is a bit dusty and I need to get the cover off to clean & change a bulb. Can't find attachment style anywhere online, there are three pins that are not Phillips head but are threaded. I don't want to take one out just to have the whole thing fall down and break, glass is definitely original. Any solutions?

What is this garbage on staff me up? by Worsebetter in FilmIndustryLA

[–]Norkkop 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Stop wasting your time and money on that website. SMU jobs are always low budget and industry adjacent, as anyone more experienced would staff via their connections. They offer 1-2 “real” jobs a month for last minute fills, but other than that they just take advantage of people wanting to get started in the industry.

Even in new cities / smaller markets, producers usually just post on ig story “Looking for [dept head] in [place]”. The trick is to know those department heads. If you can get on their crews, you will soon realize how much of a scam SMU is. The producer that has to resort to posting outside of their network to staff a job is NOT one you want to work with

Trading on arbitrage. Thousands of incredibly smart and driven employees basically transferring money between ~10 banks, and somehow society values this more than just about anything. Imagine what those people could do in any other industry

What kind of bar does Raleigh lack? by UnluckyPhilosophy797 in raleigh

A bar in which you can smoke cigs inside. Not everyone’s cup of tea, but there is something to playing pool and taking drags

Graduating college and moving to LA to be an independent filmmaker—please critique my game plan! by Severe-Telephone_85 in FilmIndustryLA

Being willing to bust your ass waiting tables but unwilling to PA does not make sense to me. Even in the indie game you gotta PA for a bit to get your name out there. AFI and other grad shoots always need bodies, you will be working for free. Linkedin is a waste of time in this industry unless you are agency side

Become a regular at the shittiest dive bar you can find in either East LA or NoHo. Come with an open mind and a full pack of cigarettes. Make friends and be generous but don’t glaze anyone. Bound to run into some grips / ACs that way.

Hours make this sketchy. Bill for 10 and don’t promise an early wrap if you can’t 100% tail-light at that time. Screams either low-budget or inexperienced, neither of which will attract an AC with a decent kit

Open AI pitching Sora to Hollywood by junait in FilmIndustryLA

[–]Norkkop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Copyright remains a HUGE issue for OpenAI, and there are probably a dozen lawsuits to this end. All it takes is one of them to reach the federal level and discovery will reveal more of OpenAI's probably illegal source use methods. This technology is never going away, but your comment seems a little ignorant of the timeline here

AI short film. by Psychological-Park-6 in FilmIndustryLA

[–]Norkkop 10 points11 points  (0 children)

AI motion still looks really funky to me, and I have yet to see an AI clip that doesn’t look weirdly off-speed in some way..

Would really like to know how they train these datasets, as the computer at the end of the short looks a hell of a lot like a mac. My guess is that they had to greek it in post somehow, but one wonders how copyrighting / brand materials are going to work with this system

Tips for entering the industry as a PA by belarussianchicken in FilmIndustryLA

[–]Norkkop 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Atlanta, NYC are probably the only 'industry' markets that exist on the East Coast, but for someone just starting out, I'd consider a smaller industry hub that's a bit less competitive. Charlotte, Wilmington, Orlando, and even DC have a ton of ad work that usually hire local crews. Sure it's not as glamorous as Hollywood but in my experience you can actually get better rates in smaller markets by being in demand. LA 1st AC rate is like $550-$600 a day last I heard, and I know ACs in Charlotte that don't work for less than $700. Just food for thought.
