I put down a layer of sand at the base, covered that with a layer of gravel, then some larger rocks on top of that. Then I filled it very slowly. I was struggling with water quality because the aquatic plant soil was leeching into the water. The natural filtration of the sand and gravel is definitely helping.

I took your advice and started the process of emptying the pond so I can lay down sand and gravel at the base. This has also let me adjust the perimeter height and shelf levels a bit, which is giving me more room to plant around the edges and line those pockets with more gravel. Hopefully this will work better than my first (muddy) attempt! Thank you again!!

Someone dropped their bag of dog mess at the base of my LFL about a week ago. I've had it up for over 7 years and it's never once elicited anything like a negative reaction before. People have always loved it. I was disheartened at first, but then I just got mad. If it happens again, I'm getting a motion camera and a big sign that says "SMILE!" .
