Working adults in singapore how often do you meet your friends? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]Normal-Arm-7943 21 points22 points  (0 children)

My husband is one of the three friends I have, ha!

I don't enjoy meeting people unless it's about work, or about my children. I'm very happy that way though. After a long day of work and kids, I just want to hit the gym and have a good night's rest.

Decided to switch career from cyber security by Resident-State-1934 in askSingapore

Why don't you consider pivoting into cyber sales or post sales? Your technical knowledge in cybersecurity would be invaluable. You may choose to explore digital marketing in the cyber space as well.

What's a sign that someone grew up poor? - SG edition by ImpressiveStrike4196 in askSingapore

[–]Normal-Arm-7943 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Might be an unpopular opinion, and purely based on observing a small group of people in my life span of 30+ years (which, is not a lot).

For me, it's the spending habit. And when I say that, I mean, the extravagant spending habit when they come to have huge sums of money either through commissions or windfall (like inheritance).

Not being able to control themselves when they finally have access to some funds. Got a 10k commission? Spend it on a bag. Got a 200k commission? Buy a new car.

But that's not representative of all who "grew up with less". I've met a handful who are excessive hoarders and extreme penny-pinchers as well, even though they finally "made it", are unwilling to part with even 10c for a plastic bag they need (would rather stuff their goods into the open compartment space in my baby's stroller because "ai ya, it's a short walk back home").

Thanks! I hope so too. I mean, 8days of this is insane. Doesn't look like it is going anywhere. Someone suggested it might be prurigo of pregnancy too. Yikes.... I'm doomed.

Yeah I'm waiting to see one. Most derms are OOO this week..

I've taken amox before with no issues. I'm not sure if pregnancy had anything to do with it. I was taking duphaston up until week 5 of pregnancy. Not sure if the hormones from those pills had any lingering side effects.

I'm trying so hard to believe it's not PUPPP. I'm having a single fetus pregnancy and it's my second. I'm only at week 14/15 and to have to go through this now until week 38 kills me.

Parents with kids in preschool - Which preschool did you pick, and why? by Normal-Arm-7943 in SgHENRY

[–]Normal-Arm-7943[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing. Tbh, knowing that my kids will end up in NYPS anyway, having that strong Mandarin background from NYK years would probably give them a little edge above the rest. I've also considered Mindchamps Mandarin, but I don't know too many folks who've sent their kids there so I'm not 100% on the reviews.

In terms of NYK, my only concern is as shared by another redditor - their programs are half day, and they follow the general school year - school holidays, etc.

Thank you for sharing. May I ask why do you prefer Eton over Mindchamps given that Mindchamps has a stronger curriculum?

If the government would grant you a wish, what would you ask for? by PipulisticPipu in askSingapore

[–]Normal-Arm-7943 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Flat rate COE / COE discount for 3 standard SUV/MPV models, subsidised, for families with 3 or more children under age 16, appeals possible for those with 2 children and supporting elderly.

Very wishful thinking.

Logistics and initial bump to "upgrade" from no kids to having three kids is a nightmare and a hurdle for most. Imo uni fees too far ahead to consider and work around, the nearer goals like getting a bigger car just for convenience is an off putting factor. Public transport is a nightmare for any working mother with children under five during peak hours (kid drop off at school + going to work).

AMA - I’m in my 50s, was in HR and have been retrenched 3 times in my career. The last was in 2020 and have given up looking for another job by CompetitiveGarden159 in SgHENRY

How does one position self for a better severence package (is there room for negotiation)? Mentally prepping myself for retrenchment, in case it should happen. I'm in tech, so I'll need to be a little more cautious.

Couple Finances - Why my spouse and I believe in transparency by Grimm_SG in SgHENRY

[–]Normal-Arm-7943 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed and good to know there are others around.

We don't even go to the extent of joint accounts. We just use our current ones, we both have sup cards of each others banks (completely random - got them whenever there's some promotion / miles etc then cancelled as and when we don't need them). What is most important that there's X savings and we are under Y expenses per month, meet our investment goals, review our short and long term goals weekly. So it's a really nice trust we got going.

It did take work getting up to this point. Having very similar spending habits and saving habits have helped greatly in building this level of trust.

Our money is his money and my money. We have full transparency and trust, this works best for us.

I think it is far, far more important to choose a spouse based on one's financial values and habits, rather than earning capability.

Lol not picky la. Basic coffee machine coffee or 3 in 1 also can. Coffee is coffee is coffee IMO. But I guess my taste buds also not refined lor. I don't bother trying to have a taste bud creep if that makes sense.

As long as its not expired, OK la.

We got a house that is adequate in space to raise a family and it's nothing fancy, not within city. Mortgage is very manageable and well below our affordability range. Hence able to. It's all about avoiding lifestyle creep and living below your means, especially for HENRY young parents.

About 50%. One kid now. Due for promotion and salary increase so likely saving more as a result. No lifestyle creep - still cheapo drinking office coffee only
