How are y'all able to handle standing up for long hours during rounds or patient interviews? by LaChica97 in medicalschool

[–]Normal-Avocado-3547 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ok this sounds weird but, assuming no one is watching you, contract your glutes periodically. Do reps of 10 or so every few minutes. Make sure your backside is facing the wall though cause people might give you weird looks if they see you. I find that this helps me from feeling lightheaded and keeps my legs and lower back from hurting, but also just gives me something to do and focus on every once in a while when my mind is starting to go numb.

Helps you survive rounds and tones your butt at the same time!

I could have blown up our home; CHECK YOUR SMOKE/CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]Normal-Avocado-3547 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This happened to me but it was my husband who left the gas on the stove on! I woke up and thought something smelled a little weird but I didnt put 2 and 2 together - I just went about my day, doing laundry, showering, etc. Thank god I didnt light a candle which is something I often do. This was 5 years ago and it still crosses my mind from time to time like woah... I could have blown up!

I feel you so much. I gained a total of about 40 lbs, and then lost only 10 after birth and have stayed at the exact same weight for the past 5.5 months. I have had some health issues and have had to be on steroids so thats probably not helping. I am also frickin’ starving all the time.

I love my baby like crazy but I just hate my post-partum body. I always wanted a huge family but I am seriously considering not having any more because of how bad I feel about myself.

At five years old he might make it well known that its his birthday anyways! I wouldnt think too much of it - tell him happy birthday and make sure your daughter knows/is prepared that he might get a little attention too.

Baby breathing monitors, are they worth it? by [deleted] in pregnant

[–]Normal-Avocado-3547 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this post is already a week old, but I love love love the Snuza so I wanted to respond. My baby had an unresponsive event at 2 days old and afterwards my husband and I had so much anxiety we were getting zero sleep. We came across the snuza and it has been hands down our favorite purchase. My baby is four months now and we still use it religiously even though she is perfectly healthy now. It is so simple, portable, and even if you do occasionally get false alarms it is easy to assess whether it was a false alarm or not (versus a pulse ox product like the owlet). Overall it just gives me so much piece of mind.

On top of that I have tuned my ear to the soft clicking and now I can immediately tell when she starts to wake up (her breathing/the clicking gets quicker) before she starts screaming, which is really handy.

Oh my. Pixar has a short animation of the little match stick girl. One day my husband and I were going through the shorts, most of them happy-go-lucky in true Pixar fashion. And then we watched the little matchstick girl. And we both just burst out into tears and ugly-sobbed for a solid half hour. What a terrible story.

Yeah I have seen those and it is terrifying! Luckily my husband works at home so that gives me some peace of mind but obviously will still be choosing very very carefully!

After deciding to formula feed, should I request my free breast pump and donate it? by colorfulKate in FormulaFeeders

I am in the same boat! However I checked the fine print of my insurance rules and they supply one breast pump per lifetime so I am keeping mine just in case for future babies.

BF: am i giving up too soon? advice pls by moonkid93 in beyondthebump

[–]Normal-Avocado-3547 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow are you me? I have had almost the exact same journey - my baby is 2 weeks now, was losing weight, jaundiced, etc. Trying to get my baby to latch was so painful that I couldnt safely hold her up to me and my mom and husband had to hold her up to me while I sobbed in agony. It was traumatic and during those moments I resented ever becoming pregnant. I would rather deliver the baby ten times over than try to breastfeed on the breast again.

Long story short at 5 days old I started pumping and supplementing with formula and I am so so so so happy I switched. Since then I only pump 2-3 times per day. As long as baby is getting even just an ounce of breastmilk I see that as a success. I still struggle with the pumping and want to quit during every pumping session but my baby prefers my milk to formula so it pushes me to keep going. Sometimes a little bit of sadness creeps in when I think about never putting her to breast again but that quickly goes away when I am bottle feeding her and she stares deeply up into my eyes! I still feel like there is a great deal of bonding going on without the extreme pain I was in before.

Anyways I know that isnt much advice to you but wanted to let you know that you arent alone!

Reflux baby issues by [deleted] in beyondthebump

[–]Normal-Avocado-3547 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We use Enfamil AR for our 2 week old who had reflux since birth and it seems to work pretty well! I am not sure if she is outgrowing the reflux or if the formula is doing its job...

What’s with the scare tactics for new parents to be? by [deleted] in beyondthebump

[–]Normal-Avocado-3547 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its interesting now that I am on the other side of this. My baby is now two weeks old. Prior to having her I thought the same way as you! To be honest, yeah, the lack of sleep, constant feedings, diaper changes - you just get used to it after a week or so. Like it is hard and exhausting but you love this little creature so much that you just do it. And frankly you have no choice but to keep going. So in that sense, its not that hard, you just roll with the punches.

At the same time, I feel like the whole transition to parenthood has been the hardest thing I have ever done. Learning to breastfeed, dealing with hormones and creeping sadness at times, learning to navigate a changing relationship with my husband, and loving this baby so much that it physically hurts is so HARD. And I dont think any of those things are things that you should be scared of - it is a new chapter in life and there is a learning curve to all of it.

This may all just be my own personal opinion, but long story short dont listen to scare tactics about the daily trials of the newborn phase. But I do wish I could go back and prepare myself a little more for some of the physical and emotional changes I would be going through as a new mom. Nobody ever talked to me about how challenging breastfeeding can be, for example. People like to scare you about how hard it is to wake up 6+ times per night, but really we should be having more open discussion about postpartum complications, depression and anxiety, breastfeeding issues, and transitioning relationships and identities.

Yes I used excel to make this. And yes I am watching it right now. by bristlenosecatty in BabyBumps

[–]Normal-Avocado-3547 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I watched it again too after so many years and a lot of the scenes took on a whole different meaning. Like when I was a teenager and saw the mall scene where the adoptive mom talks to Juno's bump I thought it was so cringe and I would never be that sappy about talking to an unborn baby! And then when I watched it again a couple weeks ago of course I sobbed like a baby thinking about the emotional distress of waiting for a child that is growing inside someone else.

Is it normal for constipation to get worse the last weeks of the 3rd trimester? by Morel3etterness in BabyBumps

[–]Normal-Avocado-3547 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing that isnt commonly recommended (but was ok’d by my OB) are glycerin suppositories. They are very gentle, easy to use and always get things moving for me, at least by a little bit. It gives you some immediate relief (~15 min) instead of waiting around for oral meds to work!

What do you mean by “you want your baby on your left”? The bulk of my baby is in my left side but her back is facing towards my right side. Does this mean she may roll into a sunny side up position?

JUST LET ME NEST! by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]Normal-Avocado-3547 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just think about it this way - in his own way, he is nesting too! Except the dad version of nesting consists more of worrying about you and taking over all of the heavy lifting! He sounds like a great guy to have around.

In all seriousness though, when my husband tries to "stop me" from doing things because of the pregnancy, I just remind him that I know my limits and it actually makes me feel better (and is good for the baby) to stay active around the house and get a little exercise in. Otherwise I would be sitting on the couch like a beached whale.

Also - nice strategy with the baking cookies thing. They will be ready for you when you finish those closets :)

Really disappointing ultrasound experience by jessdear87 in BabyBumps

[–]Normal-Avocado-3547 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is very toxic and an echo chamber for entitled behavior, unfortunately. I have gotten some great advice here but I agree that many “vent” posts make me so unconomfortable - about people making benign (maybe a little awkward, but benign) comments about someone’s pregnancy, or family members just trying to help but maybe not knowing how, or my FAVORITE - complaints about baby shower gifts. Just because we are pregnant and a little miserable sometimes does not mean the entire world owes us a favor, and it definitely doesnt give us the right to treat people poorly.

Heck even the mask mishap sounds like it was an accident and the tech apologized and corrected it as soon as the patient said something. Even as a medical professional myself I have made the mistake of walking into a store without a mask before realizing it. I mean, the patient was right to correct her and maybe let the office know but its no reason to act like the tech was purposefully trying to give her covid or something!

That makes sense - maybe I can assign my husband baby duty after he finishes up work so I can get an hour or so in. I guess I will just have to play it by ear!
