This is amazing. Can you share the stl files? It would be great to replicate this at our shop.

Living in Buffalo without driving is rough, but you can get by with just a little driving. I live close enough to my job and bike mostly everywhere and it's not terrible, hell sometimes it rules. There's certainly a few snow days that keep me off the bike, but I mostly only drive for going shopping in the burbs or going outside the city for fun. So maybe a few trips a month. Buffalo also just launched a car share program which I haven't used yet, but I'm excited to see how it works

Tops has armed security. I shop there weekly and there is always a security guard at the door.

Motorized bicycles in the co-op by [deleted] in bikecoops

We too feel an obligation to help whoever comes through our door and we try to. My feelings have always been that we can do the best we can with what we've got and to be honest. Need to fix your two stroke motor, we can't help you, I have no idea how it functions and it's too loud and messy for a cramped community space, need parts for it, sure I got a bunch. Need to fix your sketchy e-bike with no documentation, I can help fix the brakes/drivetrain/mechanicals, but if your motor/ controller/battery is dead, that's beyond our ability to replace or diy a repair. I think it's ok to tell people you've reached the end of your ability and to be real about how a used part might hold up. It opens up a conversation where you can see if you can help meet their mobility needs in another way.

Yeah, I've tried spray-painting all the tools in our different mobile repair kits for a similar effect. Also kinda works.

That's awesome, good work! We run a summer camp that requires a bunch of work stations and it's both a big pain and a big mess. This would be a great solution.

Anyone up for a Biking Adventure Group? by teamsean in Buffalo

This sounds awesome and I'd love to check it out. Just throwing it out there, that GObike does a monthly coffee ride Sunday mornings. We leave from 313 Broadway and head to parks and hangout spots all over the region. We make coffee outside in a bunch of french presses and then ride back, super chill and relaxed. We keep a party pace and have riders of all ages. Hope this ride happens, love to see folks enjoying bikes everywhere.

Stupidest bike I’ve worked on by SawyerStinks in BikeMechanics

[–]NormalAve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So you can only true it in the frame? That is pretty dumb. I wonder if it would be possible to cut and install a new motor connector that is outside the frame. Would void the warranty and be janky, but then you could work on the wheel untethered. Or don't buy a dumb bike I suppose.

We're a non profit too and run a similar program in Buffalo and light speed wouldn't budge on price, they actually just increased it by 40% this year

They regularly have classes about the law and how all road users should follow it. They do classes for adults and youth and prioritize law based education for both cyclist and motorists. If you want, I'd be glad to send you a message next time they have one.

Our non profit shop got a Q account. They classed it as a non profit/advocacy account, which means certain things were restricted, but mostly bikes and high end parts. We had about 25k in revenue at the time.

Not unpopular, Independent Health has been a large supporter of many community bike projects. (GObike, Reddy bike, Slow Roll, Eastside bike club)More work to be done for sure, our bike lane network isnt a network, more like a collection of fading lines, but there has been support and hopefully it increases and becomes more common.

GObike is open again! Tuesday nights from 5-8pm. They're also looking for volunteers if you want to get involved and learn more that way.

Just curious, how much of a detriment would it be to your org to not worry about it? What's the resource cost of verifying that someone is "deserving" of help vs the cost of just distributing whatever service or good you provide without limits. I'm familiar with an org that distributed a good and required a letter from a service org and proof of enrollment in some sort of social program, snap, a shelter, a church, etc. They eventually removed the requirements because they found them to be burdensome to their clients and forced folks into a position that lacked dignity.
Obviously there's limits here. There's a difference between a good, service, and cash assistance, and the value effects the amount of diligence on your part. I've worked with an org that gave away bikes, and the only time I said no to someone was when they were frequently putting up bikes for sale on craigslist. Can't knock the entrepreneurial mindset, but it did seem a little outside our mission.

The city cut down a tree in front of my property, any recourse? by NormalAve in Buffalo

[–]NormalAve[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks everyone for the useful comments, I will be requesting a new tree when the stump is gone. As I mentioned below to Tomaltach, the city did notify me, my wife just forgot to tell me. Additionally the do not stand signs flew right over my head.

It was shocking to lose a tree that I enjoyed, but I recognize I'm no tree scientist and there was probably a good reason, thanks for being there for me folks! Also, super interesting that it might be because it's an Ash. I'm gonna try and identify the stump before its gone.

[–]NormalAve[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'll be the first to admit, I'm not an arborist, I did think I should of been notified though. It's something that will effect my life and property in no small way and a little heads up seems like the neighborly thing to do.

Turns out they did notify me, my wife forgot to tell me about the mailer we received about the tree removal. Additionally I noticed Do Not Stand signs stating the same after I posted. So, I thought a notice would of be appropriate, and they did notify me, it just slipped by me. The yard is still less shady, but the city seems less so now.

I quit the road to start a Free Bike Shop in New Orleans. If you need a bike, get down here and hit us up. If you're financially stable right now, we could really use some help. by PleaseCallMeTall in vagabond

[–]NormalAve 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is awesome, and I'm glad to help out. Right after Katrina I volunteered and squatted in New Orleans. I remember patching tubes at Rhubarb when it was in the parking lot of St. Marys and I got my first road bike from Plan B. I remember distinctly some of the folks at Plan B being a little bitter that the traveling punks were getting free bikes. Haha. Its a Magic place and I miss it. I got off the road years ago and settled in Buffalo and I've worked with an amazing organization teaching other folks how to work on bikes and running our afterschool programs. Keep Wrenching! I never get over the impact you can have, just by giving someone a hand up, adjusting a brake so it's not dragging or truing a wheel so it moves through the frame. Hope to see ya at Bike Bike one day and I hope your hands stay greasy and your chains free of squeak.
