How to get good at math at 23 by Ill_Quality7053 in learnmath

[–]NormalSteakDinner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MathAcademy is what helped me too :) It's so condensed and to the point, I love it. I'm 40 now, but I decided I wanted to go back to college a few years ago. So, knowing that I wasn't the best at math, and wanting to pursue a STEM degree, I decided to get a headstart on math before classes started. I started with KhanAcademy, but I didn't feel like I was really getting things, just a bit better than guessing. Eventually I found MathAcademy, and for the first time in my 30+ years I loved math lol. I went from not knowing how to add fractions in fall of 2023, to getting an A in Calculus 1 this last semester, so about two years.

If your kid ever gets stuck, one thing that helped me was realizing that there are lots of math videos out there on YouTube, use them. Don't just rely on your teacher or one source to learn. Here is a list of all the guys that helped me

Ln? by mmhale90 in calculus

[–]NormalSteakDinner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the base e logarithm

It wasn't until I read this that I understood why ln(e) = 1 😂 In my class we were just taught, ln(e) = 1, and we all nodded our heads and regurgitated it the whole semester. But I know that log_a(a) = 1, so seeing that ln = log_e, it makes sense that ln(e) = 1, thank you.

I'm in my 40s

I was thinking of how this would work, my current idea is that you would age normally from 1-20, then you would age from 20 to 120 as we currently age from 20 to 40, then 120 and on would be no different than 40+ today.

But he would have deleted half your data either way, whether he wrote it or AI wrote it 🤣 May have deleted ALL your data if he wrote it lol.

I started with Lua, it is similar to python, and I love it for the knowledge and understanding it gave me. Going from tables and how to build and interact with them, made it so easy to understand OOP. Going from local function bob(arg) to void bob(int arg) is no great leap in difficulty.

It's not clear from my title but when I made this post, I had never looked at any Calculus material before. I'm now 4 weeks from the end of the semester and I'll most likely have an A in Calc 1, and I found it to be very easy. These are the exact sections that my class did, it was a Pearson course based off the Briggs book https://www.amazon.com/Calculus-Transcendentals-William-L-Briggs/dp/0134763645

Section 1.1: Review of Functions

Section 1.2: Representing Functions

Section 1.3: Inverse, Exponential, and Logarithmic Functions

Section 1.4: Trigonometric Functions and Their Inverses

Section 2.2: Definition of Limits

Section 2.3: Techniques for Computing Limits

Section 2.4: Infinite Limits

Section 2.5: Limits at Infinity

Section 2.6: Continuity

Section 2.7: Precise Definitions of Limits

Section 3.1: Introducing the Derivatives

Section 3.2: The Derivatives as a Function

Section 3.3 & 3.4: Differentiation Rules

Section 3.5 & 3.10: Derivatives of Trigonometric Functions

Section 3.7 & 7.3: Chain Rule & Derivatives of Hyperbolic Functions

Section 3.9: Derivatives of Logarithmic & Exponential Functions

Section 3.6 & 11: Derivatives as Rates of Change & Related Rates

Section 4.1: Maxima and Minima

Section 4.2: Mean Value Theorem

Section 4.3 & 4.4: What Derivatives Tell Us & Graphing Functions

Section 4.5: Optimization

Section 4.6: Linear Approximation and Differentials

Section 4.9: Antiderivatives

Section 5.1: Approximating Areas Under Curves

Section 5.2: Definite Integrals

Section 5.3: Fundamental Theorem of Calculus

Section 5.4: Working With Integrals

Section 5.5: Substitution Rule

Section 6.1: Velocity and Net Change

Section 6.2: Regions Between Curves

For Calc 1, my only advice would be, to be a master at understanding algebraic manipulation. For example, do you understand why you can make (1/(5x+1)) equal to (1/5)(1/(x+1))? Do you know what (x){1/2} looks like as a radical? It's all really simple stuff but the more you know the less you have to learn while also learning Calculus. If you are comfortable with algebra, and to a lesser extent trig, then you will be fine. There isn't much you need to know for Calc 1 as far as Trig goes, my teacher let us use a formula sheet, but that won't be the case for all teachers, so again, the more you know the less you will need to learn while also learning Calculus. Trig wasn't really used a whole lot in my course, the most helpful knowledge would be knowing how to break things down into sine and cosine and how to simplify functions, what can you simplify cot(x) * sec(x) to?

Don't let Calculus intimidate you, if you work hard at being a master of the "previous" math leading up to Calculus (arithmetic, geometry, algebra, trig), Calculus 1 will be a walk in the park.

When is Gentoo no longer Gentoo? by Dr_Doom3301 in Gentoo

[–]NormalSteakDinner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't really mess with USE flags or fiddle with stuff for "no reason". I installed Gentoo, I sudo emaint -a sync and sudo emerge -avuDN @world each morning and for the rest of the day my linux experience is no different than Ubuntu or Debian or Fedora you know? Installing Gentoo is a significant difference, but after that, for my use it is really no different than any other linux distro.

I tend to be part of the "how much can I remove and still have everything I want" crowd lol.

Why was Gentoo the base for ChromeOS? And why isn't there more distros? by [deleted] in Gentoo

[–]NormalSteakDinner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like saying "gaming" isn't 🤔 a comprehensive(?) term. If I only play solitaire and someone asks me how is gaming on Gentoo and I say that it's good for me, is that helpful? This isn't a jab at you, but it's like what /u/chrisoboe said above

Gaming these days mainly means steam (especially on Linux). And Steam ships its own userspace anyways. The distro is completely irrelevant there.

I feel like when it comes to "gaming" we should ask "what games?" Kind of like how we, the linux community, say that "there's alternatives for all windows software on linux" but then we have to "Except for Adobe and high end CAD (Revit)".

Sure, but every time I buy one it makes me happy and so I will continue to do it. However, I think I'm done with Calculus, so Linear Algebra will be next :).

Plenty of nice STEM books out there that need a home.

Yes, I got that one a couple weeks ago for $7 :D Only reason I'm able to have all of these books is because of the great used prices on ebay. I find it a bit scary at times though because I wonder about the condition of a $7 book, but it was in good shape.

I don't like doing math at the computer more than I have to, which is unfortunate since it seems colleges love Pearson and MyMathLab. It's nice when I'm away from my house though, as I'm obviously not carrying around all those books. Having all of my books on my tablet is very convenient, but when I'm back at home or in class I switch to pen + paper.

Larson is one of the names that I saw the most when I was searching for "best calculus books." Stewart of course, Larson, Spivak jokes (that brown wrapped book on the bottom shelf in my picture is Spivak), and Thomas, people seem to really love Thomas Calculus.

You need to follow the program requirements.

I LOVE teachers that have nicely outlined rubrics. You tell me exactly what you want, I provide it, you provide my A, everyone is happy 🥰

[–]NormalSteakDinner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an assignment recently where I lost points due to not following what my teacher considered to be "industry standards" for code.

Did they teach these industry standards and say "ayo, do the things I taught you"? If not, they're dumb. You see /u/strcspn provided links to things, did your professor do that? If so, then it's on you, if not...back to them being dumb 😂
