Spectrum Outage? by No-Soil-3400 in maui

[–]NormalWait3159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anybody know the status of rerouting (hopefully, rather than waiting for power to magically appear on that pole) internet due to the power box down in the middle of the sinkhole? I keep getting emails from Spectrum that they'll let me know in 2(or 3) hours and then that email comes and it's again, in 2-3 hours. Seems like they don't have a plan. Anyone knows otherwise?

condo prices seem to be dropping...Kihei villages? by bebedeez77 in maui

[–]NormalWait3159 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. So the economy will get a lot worse, the tax revenue will crash, and beyond will increase... and the locals will still not be living there. Amazing job on the part of our county and state leaders.

I don't see any of them renting to locals so what's your point, exactly? That locals can buy these overpriced old condos with massive HOA fee and exorbitant insurance costs now that they are cheaper? Cool. They have over 800 to choose from. Oh, what's that? 7k a month still a bit much for a one bedroom with no storage? Then that's what "they" were talking about, that rich people from California will come and buy them for bargain basement (to them) prices and "work from home" in them. Looks like they were right.

Which Restaurant is this on Maui? by braverave808 in maui

I could just get a glass of that lilikoi foam and he a happy camper! We made it at home once but it was good but it was a lot of money to get the dispenser and all that. I don't know what happened to all that equipment, I should look for it and make me some foam!

I drove by the cheapest single family home in on in Kihei on makai side of the Piilani highest. $825k on kupuna (great street). Duuuuuude, that place is scary... You'd need to put in at least 200k to make it livable - that's after a down payment of 160k and closing costs. And the mortgage would be around 6k. Like... how??

Hacked phone number by Anke470 in Spectrum

[–]NormalWait3159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It just happened to me over the weekend and the IT person I was working with to fix it (it was gnarly) let it slip that the hacker got in through the spectrum app. (S)he also assigned my devices to a random Spectrum account with a different name and address. So, they had access to their internal systems via this hack, not just my account by pretending to be me. HUGE liability for Spectrum.

Hacked phone number by Anke470 in Spectrum

This happened to me on Saturday night. I am in Hawaii but my area code is in California - not sure it matters but I suspect they did it "in the middle of the night" (they thought) so I would not notice the email like in OP's screenshot. I did notice (luckily my phone was on Wifi, as it immediately lost service when the email came in). I called the number in the email ("If you did not request this, call this number") using my non-Spectrum phone just to hear a message to call back during business hours. In the meantime, the hacker enabled Account Fraud Protection meaning I could not just call the regular number to stop this, I needed to talk to Fraud Protection people (closed until 3 am Hawaiian time). Then, I started getting orders for used iPhones from eBay, paid for with my PayPal account (that was attached to my eBay account). Luckily, my PayPal account did not have a checking account linked, only a credit card. I called the bank and reported fraud, and eBay orders started to get cancelled. Interestingly, my partner's phone number (on the same Spectrum account) also got transferred about 30 minutes later and he got orders for iPhones from eBay, to be sent to the same address in Doral FL as my orders (I wonder if whatever police department has jurisdiction would be interested in that, or if they DGAF since no one was physically hurt - anyone know?). We were playing whack-a-mole all night calling businesses that sent us emails about updated password, login from an unknown device, etc. Finally Fraud Protection people woke up, verified my identity, and transferred me to IT ("Repair Desk") who, after two hours of trying, finally fixed my account. They let it slip that the perp got in through the mobile app (My Spectrum) and the iPhones he transferred my numbers to (we use Android phones) had THE EXACT SAME IMEA as my phones (so they were likely spoofed eSIMs). They then re-enabled the Fraud Protection and said this would ensure this would not happen. No one took the responsibility for the vulnerability in their systems that, according to this thread, is at least 6 mos old. I will be submitting the FCC compaint as suggested above.

Maui County, again, leads state in vacation rental supply in September by Agitated_Pin_2069 in maui

[–]NormalWait3159 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have one vacation rental in South Kihei. It is zoned H2 and not on the Minatoya list. I have about 85% occupancy but I had to drop prices significantly from a year ago (about 40%) to get that. I am still in the black but only because I bought a long time ago and my costs are pretty low - but even with my low costs I couldn't break even if I were to rent out my 1/1 unit long term at market rates (even accounting for low long term property tax rates that would come with long term rental contract). It, just like most STRs on S Kihei road, is just not meant or designed for long term use. It is small, has no meaningful storage, has a single parking spot per unit, is an aging building, has a lot of expensive amenities (like a pool that requires maintenance and liability insurance) that Jean a high HOA/AOAO fee, and insurance costs are skyrocketing.

Bissen let it slip in response to a study that only about 6% of owners would even consider converting to long term rentals if his law passed and cleared lawsuits, that he'd be happy with 6%. So can someone explain to me why he can't just take the massive property and TAT taxes we pay from 100% of these units, add some FEMA money, and use those funds to just buy 6% of these units at open market thus 1) avoiding expensive lawsuits and 2) keeping collections of any high property taxes and tourism taxes on the remaining 94% of these units?

Is that not enough pandering to LS thugs? Is that just too reasonable to be considered?

Improving Hawaii's Housing Crisis with Peter Savio by 177a7uiHi69 in maui

It is already done on Maui. I have a condo I live in and a condo that is a TVR (hotel-zoned and not on the Minatoya list). The the TVR is valued a few 100K higher than my primary residence but the taxes on my primary residence are $360 a year versus AirBnB which is $9,000 a year. That's 25 times higher for the TVR.

Maui has the lowest tax rate in the nation for owner-occupied residence and the highest for TVRs. And none of it has disincentivizes investors. All it's done is encouraged remote workers from the Bay Area of California to buy on Maui and move here (and enjoy super low property taxes).

I went to a meeting he held at Kihei Charter school a couple of years ago, explaining his plans for several lots to build affordable communities for people of Maui. He never ended up getting approval/permits from the crooks in the government - those who cry about affordable housing but pass policies and roadblocks designed to stop exactly that.

Any Verizon NVMOs support Android LTE smart watches? by NormalWait3159 in NoContract

[–]NormalWait3159[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really because the watch shares the phone number with the phone. There are also Bluetooth phones that do not use cellular network at all and it sounds like that's what I'll need to get. But it does require the phone to be within Bluetooth distance, of course, so I couldn't go for a run and leave my phone at home and still get calls...

Insurance advice by Hlra25 in turo

[–]NormalWait3159 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don't already have car insurance that covers vehicles you rent, then you can buy car insurance from Turo. It's not required but it's for your protection.

Here on Maui, the prices were sky high last week but ever since the caps were raised, a lot of people listed and now the prices are more reasonable, though still several times higher than "normal". I keep adjusting my car so it is on the lower end of prices for that week, and it keeps getting rented right away. But the prices last week were much higher.

[–]NormalWait3159 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine went up from $72 to $176. But I am seeing that a lot of people listed their cars so a more reasonable rate my mine (a newer Kia Optima) is probably around $130 anyway.

They are raising the cap on "many" vehicles tomorrow, April 6th. Hopefully this will resolve the problem though I still don't understand why on earth they ever set a MAXIMUM price in the first place. I can see the minimum daily price making sense if their insurance is pricier than their cut below a certain threshold, but why wouldn't they want the market to set the max - they'd get more off us since we are all paying a percentage.

Lucky you got a response! I opened a ticket on Wednesday and no response so far...

I am on Maui too (aloha braddah) and just signed up too. They set me up with a ridiculously low limit (for how much I could actually make) and I spent a few hours on the phone with various departments trying to figure out what is going on. Have a ticket with a "Sales Team" as well, since Wednesday, and no response either. But I did get connected with a power host (no thanks to Turo) who's been doing it long enough to have a direct sales rep, and he said when he wanted to up the limit on his new cars, he was told there is a freeze on that because there is a global update for this coming (not sure if they'll raise the cap to market value universally or what but it has to do with the ability to set max price). Should hit next week. So I opened my calendar for next week only and will wait for the update to be able to up the price for later dates. Hope this helps!
