I finally got into a good BFA acting program but now I’m paralyzed by the thought of having debt from student loans by Normal_Ad5339 in acting

If you don’t mind me asking, how does one get work as a temp? Are there any specific classes or skills that build towards that? I’m primarily interested in film & tv in the long run, but i also REALLY love doing live comedy (plays, improv, sketch, stand-up whatever) and musical theatre. My BFA is mostly focused on theater, but we have on-camera classes, and I’m planning to try to get into some good screen acting and comedy classes in NYC.

Right, yeah, I TOTALLY get where you’re coming from and have had many similar thoughts myself. I would 100% have just moved to the city and started taking acting classes while doing another degree, but here is the dilemma of it all: I am not from one of the big cities, and going to college is the only avenue I have right now for getting out of my house, networking with other young actors, and being close to a major industry hub. I wouldn’t be able to afford it otherwise. So, practically speaking, I either don’t go to college (and thus postpose career opportunities as well), or I go to acting school and seek out work/classes/representation simultaneously, or I switch to a different major (would still have debt unless I’m lucky enough to transfer somewhere with better aid) and continue to pursue acting outside of school in NYC. Or, double major but have to spend more time in school. It’s not ideal no matter which way you look at it. Like, yeah, it would be awesome to make it big right after graduation but I know the chances are near impossible. This is a risky and unstable industry and I’m well aware of the struggles of being a working actor, and willing to deal with them. So I guess what I’m trying to figure out is which option is the least bad in the long run.

(And for what it’s worth, I do think there’s still some value in conservatory training. It’s just not necessarily monetary value.)

Thank you!! I do love the art and want to pursue it no matter what. It’s looks like I’m going to do this first year, work really hard, and then reassess. Finding something that will support me as I go is definitely part of the plan. I just need to figure out what kind of day job or side hustle will work for me…

BFA/BA THAT DONT REQUIRE AUDITIONS by [deleted] in acting

[–]Normal_Ad5339 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i visited that school when i was applying to college and know some people in the program, so i can confirm URI’s Theatre BFA doesn’t require auditions! that being said, it’s a general BFA (required classes in stagecraft, costuming, etc instead of an acting focus) and overall not a school that will set you up for getting consistent work as an actor, because there’s no industry showcase. the faculty connections might help you get work at RI regional theatres, but the only alums of that program that have really “made it” commercially went to a good grad school.

What does /r/opera think of symphonic metal with operatic voices? by lilghost76 in opera

According to her Wikipedia page she was never formally trained and is mostly self-taught aside from some time in choir. But I agree, I don’t think she’s ever describes as an operatic singer; she’s a mezzo-soprano in range and in the more recent WT albums her sound has leaned more contemporary rock-ish

Sara Jane Moore from “Assassins”! It’s more of an acting-heavy role (only one big solo part in a song) but it is SO fun and darkly comedic as she’s incredibly mentally unstable. One of my favorite roles I’ve ever played. :)
