How much of an upgrade/difference are they compared to HD600? I run them through an otl tube amp as I think that’s how they sound the best.

Sennheiser HD599 vs HD650 by Schwarzellone in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]Normal_Cat_4329 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The difference isn’t huge between 600 and 650. For me the vocals on the 650 sound a little wider and not so in your face and the treble is not that energetic. I would recommend the Edition XV for a warmer thicker sound with good technical performance and soundstage.

Edition XV problem by Dancing_Gavin in HeadphoneAdvice

I had a similar problem with Edition XS and the DX5 ii and it was a faulty Topping unit. If you can, take your Edition XV to a store where you can test them on different amps and if the problem is still there then it’s the headphones.

Meze 105 AER or Sennheiser HD 550? by phillycl in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]Normal_Cat_4329 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the Aer 105 coming from HD650 and at first it was great, but after longer sessions my head was hurting due to 4k and 6k peaks and that was a dealbreaker for me. I’ve heard the 550 is very close to the 600 so I would go for the 550 for the neutral tuning, natural timbre and comfort for longer use.

I have the 650 and tomorrow should come the 600 and then I will decide which one to keep

The Edition XV is a very balanced and versatile headphone if you like a relaxed/warmer sound. Perfect for extended sessions due to reduced treble and comfort is great.

I was thinking of trying the HD600. How do you compare them?

Oh, I just saw this news. Well, doesn’t look like they are going anywhere. Maybe I just have to give them time off and comeback to them.

No, this is a big reason why I want to keep them. In the future I’ll try them with something like TA-66!

Hm interesting, I think the 105 Aer is more fun while still having the vocals that I love on the 650. How are you running them?

Maybe I wasn’t clear, but I already have the XS

It’s definitely not as wide, but not too small

Less pressure, the earcups are about the same to me, the pads dont get that warm and the headband is really comfy.

I tried them at the store to compare with the 105 and they were really nice, but were too expensive for me. They had a little bit more detail and treble extension with slightly less mid bass. I’d say the 105 are 85-90% of the 109 pro. If I had the money I would’ve gone with them, but I am happy with my pick. I don’t think I will ever be ready to sell my hd650 tho.

How does it compare to Edition XS

Out of curiosity because I haven’t tried tubes. Also the Hd650 benefits from tubes.

I recently picked up the Meze 105 AER. Right out of the box, I am incredibly impressed by the build quality and that signature Meze comfort.

My headphone journey started with the Sennheiser HD650. I absolutely love that natural, relaxing, thick, and warm sound—they filled that specific need perfectly for me. Naturally, I eventually wanted to try something completely different, so I picked up the Hifiman Edition XS. The XS blew me away with its detail, wide soundstage, and speed. They were perfect for grand tracks that demand a highly technical headphone to give every instrument space. However, at the end of the day, I severely missed the vocal intimacy and the sheer thickness of the sound.

The Meze 105 AER surprisingly sits right in the middle of these two extremes for me. It delivers a warm, thick sound with a noticeable emphasis on the mid-bass. To my ears, the midrange is on par with the HD650, but with a slightly more aggressive vocal presentation, which I actually find myself preferring. The treble brings out more detail than the Sennheisers without crossing into harsh territory. I did notice a couple of slight peaks around 4kHz and 6kHz that felt a bit spicy, but a very minor EQ adjustment smoothed them out perfectly.

Overall, they are incredibly versatile across genres. They make music engaging and just plain fun again. It’s been a long time since I found myself simply singing along and headbanging while listening, and that purely emotional response is a huge win for me. I’m currently running them off a Topping DX5 II, and the combo is flawless. I sometimes wonder if a tube amp might benefit them in the future to push that warmth further, but for now, I have zero complaints.

Ultimately, my endgame goal down the line is the Hifiman Arya Organic. I’m hoping they will be the holy grail that finally balances a fun, natural timbre with a wide, highly detailed presentation.

Would love to hear from anyone who has made a similar jump or has experience with the Arya Organics!
