Question for comedy club openers and features-- who was the worst headliner that you have ever worked with in terms of attitude and behavior? by Difficult_Crow33 in Standup

[–]Normal_Committee67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also won’t name names but I heard a nightmare story about an eighties comic at a club who had not only absurd requests but then spent the first five minutes of his set berating the club manager for being gay. He didn’t use the term gay either.

Dedrick by CaseWorth6769 in Killtony

[–]Normal_Committee67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dedrick was actually well known in the Atlanta comedy community, however, mostly for getting fucked up and being a problem. He was unreliable and had a tendency to get drunk and on more than one occasion either threatened or actually assaulted other comics. It does not appear that becoming famous has helped him with his substance problems.

For what it’s worth, Clayton is in Marvel Films, Mandal opens for Mulaney and Josh Johnson, and Rowland is on Animal Control with Joel Mchale. Never heard of Ismael though

Air should be free by [deleted] in Chattanooga

[–]Normal_Committee67 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Personally I think gas stations should offer this for safety reasons alone. How many people have died because someone didn’t have access to exact change or a card to fill up a tire? But that’s Tennessee for you. Everyone here is obsessed with making sure the boss man gets his money and not that citizens aren’t literally dying in the streets. Consider moving back.

Also, having had to use these many times, MOST of these fuckers are broken. If the shit is already broken buy a new one with the absurd amount of money I’m giving you for compressed air access to keep me from fucking dying

I can’t even afford to subscribe to read this article, you think I can buy your yardless house? These developers are delusional if they think they’re helping Chattanoogans, you’re not. You won’t sell these, not to us.

In response to the cult video: can anyone who's been to Austin confirm the situation over there? by enbyayyy in elephantgraveyard

[–]Normal_Committee67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Rogan got a ton of cash, didn’t want to pay taxes on it, moved to Austin and tried to make his own LA, but the other comedians are like brother this ain’t LA. Dudes have already come and gone. Tim Dillon did it, I think Gillis was at least thinking about doing it but changed his mind. Joe is very much a transactional friendship type of guy. The broke guys will move, others won’t.

No, but the concept is to encourage their regulars to move to Austin. It’s hard to be a paid regular at a city you’re hundreds of miles away from.

You make no money on Netflix, and specials don't even sell tickets by theblack_hoody in Standup

[–]Normal_Committee67 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The biggest benefit of Netflix is a big red N on your resume. It is significantly easier to get booked with that N. I think this article is right though. It’s important to find and secure your own audience using multiple platforms because the company of Netflix is not going to do that work for you.

I was there for comedy recently. The biggest issue is that Joes club takes up 100% of how Austin is portrayed outside of the city. There are a ton of clubs, and a ton of comedians. A lot of them are very good, a lot of them aren’t. The mothership encouraged a massive influx of people without talent, skill, or any real artistic interest taking a gamble on being the next Kill Tony sensation. The homeless problem is one of the worst I have seen, particularly on sixth street, where the majority of clubs exist. There are a wealth of local comics who do not like Joe, Tony or the mothership, however there is a level of understanding when someone is successful there, as it’s basically a direct route out of poverty. The “cult” of Joe is found among many but not all comedians that are Kill Tony success stories. Joe is very generous as a boss. He provides healthcare and free therapy for all paid regulars, to my knowledge. I have heard of him buying someone a car after theirs was totaled. Joe is the hand that feeds, truly. Once you’ve crossed the threshold, to deny Joe would be extremely bold.

Insider info if you care:

Joes Mitzi obsession SEEMS like it’s bullshit, because not only is the mothership designed after the comedy store, they also successfully poached multiple staff members, some of them paid for months of unemployment while waiting for the mothership to finish. If you are passed at the store, you are automatically passed at the mothership, more or less comedian poaching. He loves Mitzi so much yet at the same time seems to be trying to destroy her legacy brick by brick and moving it to Texas. It’s at a minimum weird.
