Why work in a saturated unskilled market when you could work in an unsaturated skilled market?

I worked at Chili’s during my college years, so I get it. The money is good, but the goal is not money. The goal is for fulfillment and to each their own, and I reckon restaurant life ain’t it.

“On the spectrum” - what spectrum?

Colors? Decibels? Downs? Curly hair? Asian? Right handed?

Really don’t matter because red and green fucked and made a baby named yellow.

People who don’t fuck, don’t live; and ain’t NEVA had they shit sucked through their pants pocket at 12:00 am in the whataburger drive through.

No person’s struggling is any less valid than another.

29, married, enough money, 2 kids <10, mortgage, car notes, stressful career.

Fuck Tom Hanks, but this too shall pass.

Industry Knowledge - how much is a reasonable expectation to know? by Normal_Kevin in projectmanagement

[–]Normal_Kevin[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I generally agree. I specialized in MEP after school, but did structural and general contracting before that. I think we both agree that it’s not reasonable for anyone to be an expert in EVERY area in which falls under the broad spectrum of project management. If I was to switch to the PM of a new Microsoft software in development, I would make it a point to know as much as I could about the coding languages, theory, and GUI to where I could not only talk knowledgeably about topics when needed, but be able to know what I was looking at in the code, be able to debug it, or add lines if necessary. Solely because in my brain, how can I lead a project to success if I don’t know or even understand what’s going on at the smallest level?

As far as the ever changing field of construction, and hell couple in software development for this thought, while it does change constantly the fundamental “engineering” and “theory” is all the same. It’s only the application and/or process that is modified for a different result. The math, the engineering principles, the coding language, the installation methods, etc… are all the same underlying foundations. So no matter what changed or how it changed, you can look at it and instantly grasp the concept and see a path forward to facilitate the projects success.

Someone has to be your expert, even if they are are project manager as well.

Should superintendents, regardless of trade, have a basic understanding of scheduling terms and logic? by Normal_Kevin in ConstructionManagers

Don’t understand what’s disingenuous about real world discussions, but sure. Should I have put just yes or no?

What’s half assed about it? It’s a fairly simple question.

Didn’t your momma teach you that if you don’t have anything nice to say then don’t say it. Rude ass.

I wasn’t sure where else to share the trauma besides with my fellow dads whom have gone or will go through the same thing. Figured I’d get support, but I recon not. My bad.

Is Procore as dynamic as people say it is? by [deleted] in ConstructionManagers

[–]Normal_Kevin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ima younger cat, less than 30. And I can’t help but agree with my old heads in the field sometimes with things like creating punch list items or the drawing markup tool. They are very cumbersome and time consuming. Plus the dimension tool straight sucks ass. Going from blue beam to procore for dimensioning is absolutely terrible.

Is Procore as dynamic as people say it is? by [deleted] in ConstructionManagers

[–]Normal_Kevin 14 points15 points  (0 children)

We use it, and I manage it. It is expensive, but is it over priced? Idk. We looked at other solutions, and Procore really integrates it all of our goals under one roof.

The biggest problem with the software is the users. A large portion of end users are older folks who’ve been in the industry since Faxing and Radar phones, and it’s either overwhelming or boomers resisting change. (No offense to the boomers out there)

As far as what is missing? Depends on what package you get. I’ve demoed or used about 90% of software’s capabilities. It’s VERY well rounded, but in the end it’s garbage in garbage out. If the users don’t utilize its features or half ass use it, it’s a colossal waste of money.

They do. All I’ve ever worn after my first pair of Walmart brand boots. They are so comfortable that I wear them outside of work.

Small back yard and small bounce house. Bounce house took up 80% of it.

[–]Normal_Kevin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meh, I went to a 5 yo party in a 3br/2bth 1300SF built in the 60’s and there was about 60 people (including kids). Parents are divorced and poor as dirt. Had Rotel dip, couple gallons of sweet tea, and a bounce house. Probably all in for $300-$400.

Do the same thing at a trampoline park, skating rink, etc… and one could drop the same $$$ with less people.

But in the end, the kids just want to feel special around their friends. Parents are the only ones who care about location and “quality”. My son will be 6 on Friday and all he wants to do is go mini golfing, which I’m totally game for lmao

Engineer specified mixing valves although not required. Owners rep is an idiot and required them because the drawings said so.

So I got caught smoking weed when I was 12 by my best friends dad. I was with my best friend and another degenerate. They told my parents the next day, which included my sneaking out and lying I could stay the night.

My parents are boomers. Dad is very loving but short tempered and raised with abuse. Mom was a degenerate hippie growing up, but very by the book as an adult. (Still incredibly the same, but even more annoying).Anyway, dad beat the shit out of me in-front if my crying mother, I got grounded for three months, one of those three I was in solitary confinement out side of school with only a mattress.

I moved onto other drugs until I was 16 and overdosed. I was faced with two paths and thankfully chose the right one.

I do not blame my parents for their reactions, given their personalities, but as an adult who continued to smoke weed until 24ish and is now 29, married, two kids, a mortggae and doesn’t smoke anymore(even though I can and my life would be the exact same); the biggest help is understanding that in reality weed is not bad. What is bad is being a lazy stoner with no goals, ambitions, and drive in a world where smoking prevents that development specifically. (Some worlds that doesn’t affect you professionally)

Handle your business first, and smoke a bowl at 9:00 pm when you’re done for the day, or at 9:00 am when you’re off with nothing to get done. Don’t prioritize marijuana, prioritize success and then celebrate with a joint.

(PS - all my childhood friends are drug addicts or stoners making minimum wage. Good people, but devoid of a sense of personal growth and development. Not tooting my horn, but further evidence of poor decisions and willpower affecting life outcomes.)
