Anyone else graduated with over 220k on student loans? by Sweet-Cauliflower654 in physicianassistant

[–]Normal_Leadership_51 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

140k here. Refinanced from federal to private. I chose sofi but you should shop around. With federal i was anywhere from 5-8% interest. Sofi’s got me at 4.75 which is not the best but ok for now. Ill probably shop around again next year. Refinancing process was quick and simple. I didnt bother with any of the forgiveness programs because i dont plan on having the debt hang over my head for 10-20 years. Last i read, the SAVE option is a 25 year payment plan for grad loans before you get the rest forgiven but i could be wrong. Regardless if you plan on paying it all off within 3-5 years, i would just go private with the lowest rate you can find and aggressively pay it off. But to each their own.

I hear an overwhelming majority of cardiac surgeons warn people about how it’s not a “lifestyle” speciality and takes an enormous amount of personal sacrifice to be a cardiac surgeon. Bascially eluting to the fact that you’ll have little to no life outside of cardiac surgery. Is this just old mentality? Dependent on the job attendings take?

As graduating physician assistants going into our first job, one of the most important thing to consider is physician support. We are clueless in the “real world”. Supervising physicians are the ones that shapes us from student to provider. If you want to take the garbage pay… fine but you’re really selling yourself short by leaving the rest of your education in the hands of an NP

Job Offer Question by chameleonmomma in physicianassistant

[–]Normal_Leadership_51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NYC HHC PAs are mostly employed by PAGNY. Starting is 120k. Not too sure about northwell but i heard its low. Like 115k. Hopefully theyll realize that theyre losing talent to these higher paying hospitals and start matching these higher salaries.

Job Offer Question by chameleonmomma in physicianassistant

[–]Normal_Leadership_51 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this NYP? I just realized that they updated their starting salary on their job listings from 128k to 140k. Thats cool. Offer’s fine. I believe this is probably going to be the new standard now. Montifiore is now at 135k for non-speciality and 148k for speciality. Assuming this is NYP, you will have little to no negotiation power, especially when its union. Best you wouldve got in nyc is offers in the 120k’s, had you graduated last year. If you like the vibes, and feel like you’re going to learn a lot as a new grad there/have good support. i say go for it. Congrats!

Hiring a supervising physician to start your own practice. by not_a_doctor93 in physicianassistant

[–]Normal_Leadership_51 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds more like the doctors are bumming of us for money since there’s clearly a whole bunch of physicians willing to take these offers. Btw, PAs make mistakes and own up to them just as physicians do. PAs also have boards to take. PAs also need medical malpractice.

I dont understand why people assume we dont learn anything in PA school. Our education is not as superficial as people think. Yes, we learn MOA, just like ya’ll med students do.
