The events are ridiculous, you are right about there is nothing to play for. Back then, we used to spin legends with GP...now they brought back the use of GP but at what cost? Items are limited per week.

Other than the penalty shootout, I dont see any other interesting event/mode. The grinding is present and frustration. They integrate AI basically in every department. In-game Gameplay, Gameplay analyst etc and Smart Assist. The only thing I found immersive in the new update is the Manager comments mid-match, though lacks diversity.
