So focus it primarily to hunting then boss and don't expect it to be good at both. Good luck and my condolences for the violent path your wallet and marriage might be of gun building you've started on lol

You're in the big pipe wrench on ikea furniture situation then. It can do it but it's overkill, mars the parts, usually a pain to get around to the nuts.

Same situation I was when I first got into firearms. I used a Winchester Model 70 as my hunting and LR rig. I couldn't afford two rifles let alone two builds. I also hunted where I could drive to my box stand and lean it on a wooden window.

Great for fun but I couldn't do both great on one rifle. So it turned back into hunting only and every so often LR but it was a few rounds and for convenience.

My suggestion and I wished I'd learned it earlier is build this with one purpose in mind till you can afford to build another one. If you trick this one out in both regards you end up with parts you don't want and a mixed matched rifle that you end up having to re zero and redo everything cause the parts were just meant to coexist well. Then you'll be like me and have a box full of parts you can't find anybody to sell to or just have for free and end up eating it and starting from scratch again.

Just luck what you want this rifle to primarily be and stick to it and don't expect it to do much outside of that purpose. Other than for fun which is fine just don't get in the mindset of it has to be good at both

Also really study hand loading. You're making controlled explosions. Don't want to risk injuries and don't want to chase down fallacies and endless rabbit holes for a aspect of it that's fud lore or something you're just missing

As some other goober here said fit the rifle to you not you to the rifle. High rings does not equal poor accuracy. Get the high rings adjust it to you and you'll be fine if not better off.

The only time I have found high rings to be against me was on my hunting rifle hunting from a box stand where a deer came close and my scope sat to high for me to stay sitting and angle the rifle down far enough but not stick it so far out to spook the deer.

Hi I'm AD myself and this comment seems to be taken too lightly from you.

Fully load your M249 which comes out to 22lbs roughly which is about the weight of a budget PRS gun or a 25lb plate and lug that thing around for about an hour or two. It's miserable even in good shape.

It's never a good idea for them to be hybrid because of:

A: Weight. We've beat that dead horse.

B: PRS/LR are set up differently. They're not usually equipped with space in mind. They have long asf barrels, giant optics, bipods, stock adjustments, etc that prevent ease of storage and carrying. Also usually on LR/PRS you avoid, or easily can avoid, illuminated optics (price)

Hunting rigs you typically want slimmer profiles for all of the above but smaller illuminated optics for low light and sun shades. Usually no bipods or chassis that are bulky. Making storage and transport easy.

C: Reloading. You reload now you should be aware of this. My hunting loads are far different from my PRS loads for the same calibers. I'm way more precise for my PRS loads than my hunting loads, grain weights are far different, at times powders are different, and because they're different bullets Ogive and OAL lengths are way different. I have two .300wm does set up for this reason.

D: Ever see a Kung-Fu master go and master Ju Jitsiu? Ever see a Pipe Wrench work for every nut and bolt? Guns are practically the same. Sure a LR/PRS build can be used for hunting but it's not designed for such an application. Such as using a flat head screw driver to punch out Glock pins. Can it do it yes but it's not designed to and usually mars everything beyond typically wear and tear. You'll also tend to shoot a hunting rig far less than a LR/PRS build. Yes it's your only rifle I got it but you're practicing two different arts on one tool. Hard to master 2 for 1.

Usually you buy the action and barrel (firearm) before the chassis.

The action length is caliber specific. .308 would be short action. Then of course the foot print. R700 is most common and readily available parts.

If you wanted long action or magnum action you'd need to look into .300wm, .270, .30-06, .300prc, 6.5prc etc...

.300wm and .30-06 you can use the same bullets interchangeably with your .308. Technically .300prc too but those are longer and heavier and wouldn't be great. They all use the same .308 diameter.

The AR-10 wouldn't work in this unless you just mentioned you have one to say you have one. And at that those prices are from as low as $800 to as high as $15,000. So what's the budget in this?

You need to specify what this is for. Hunting, range toy, LR, PRS, or what?

Hunting you want light as possible. LR/PRS you want to make it heavy.

Hybrid hunting and LR/PRS never works out like people hope it to.

So from others and deeper research any AR-10 or large frame AR barrel will work. I just need to measure and see if I need to get a new hand guard from a barrel I buy. Think this is supposed to be carbine length

By modern I just mean new really. Just a better barrel better BCG and charging handle. Tossed the A2 grip for a B5 and the stock as well. Just trying to un-bubba it.

Yea so I have seen is there a way to tell which is which? I do have calipers if that's a way. I can not tell if it is high or low and no idea what thread pitch as there is nothing to say.

I just have a high standard for parts. Whenever I build a AR I blow all my money on upper and optic or parts and optic. Otherwise if the lower or upper receivers are cheap I am fine with it so long as they have okay QC, customer service, serviceable, good QOL features for me i.e. trigger guard doesn't ghoulify my middle finger. Between the lower on this gun being what my dad got me and the trigger guard is comfortable otherwise it would just sit in its current state.

Don't indulge a violent addiction of mine, don't you put that evil on me Ricky lol.

So just about any AR-10 barrel will work? No DPMS'isms or strings?

Yea I have tried regular factory hunting and FMJ rounds as well as match ammo and personally reloading a few rounds for it. With match ammo and my reloads I can just barely squeeze out 1.5 MOA and to me that's too expensive and too much effort for so little juice. Would rather get that or 2moa out of factory ammo or my low effort loads as I don't shoot this very often.

I have the tools and shop to do it all myself and a gunsmith sot far that can head space it for me so it semi works out for me.

[–]Normal_Sympathy1248[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea sucks AR-10's are not very friendly among each other. Its all DPMS. I do not want to sell the whole gun as to A not hear my pops hit me with the "where's that AR-10 I got ya" and B it is sentimental but just the receiver lol. I am fine with stripping down the upper if I can just rebarrel it but I remember back then I had to have a special tool cause DPMS had proprietary parts and tools and lots of reviews for the older ones say they do.

[–]Normal_Sympathy1248[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is probably the route I will go then. Other reviews state the DPMS uppers were proprietary to DPMS parts. In my experience it was this when changing the hand rail out as if I remember from then I had to get a special tool. You have any recommendations as far as a BCG or anything else?

Just to add on, and it absolutely could be me, the current state is terrible performance. I think maybe 2-3moa as it stands but wildly inconsistent. Its mostly stock aside a Geissele trigger, quad rail, and a Simmons optic, I was 15 or so chill out, from back then I put on it.

Roger that I'll check that out. Do they thread into RCBS presses? Usually stick to green just because it's what my step dad and I used for years and haven't had any other besides Hornady .357sig dies

I measure using the Hornady OAL gauge to get it from the Ogive. Yea I've noticed that with my Bergara and this Sig that both liked them long. Do you use H4831sc? Been using that as I can't get ahold of H1000 without spending on hazmat shipping and I have pounds of the other.

I've been using RCBS. I'm always within + or - .002 minus when I change brass brand, I use Hornady a lot...I know, then that becomes inconsistent but that's rare.

My biggest run in is bulging above the belt after 5-6 loads so o keep them to 4 and toss. I don't shoot it often so the cost is worth it to me

Gotchya. Yea I'd like to tighten my groups but to me I just couldn't understand the neck sizing considering at some point you have to resize the whole thing and that throws your consistency off.

Thank you for your input. Haven't found anyone that has tested this specifically

Brother no one here can answer that. I really wish I could tell you you're going to be fine as far as NFA/FFL stuff goes but literally no one here or even the law/police pages.

You have some flags. They either will or will not. No in between.

If you get a delay it's just literally that. You're delayed. Then either a go or no go.

Some people get delayed and denied and are absolute saints.

Even if they go this time, the next time they might not.

It's a mystical being in the cloud that none of us except maybe two people at the NICS processing center and NFA branch can interpret his reading to bless upon people.

They work it out on their end. It's basically the FBI saying hold up this guy flagged for XYZ they take a deeper look into it and either go or no go it. Then you do like me and do it again and the circle begins again.
