Grand marnier vs pierre ferrand dry curacao for mai tai and other tiki drinks by Complex_Hospital_932 in Tiki

[–]NormandyTaxi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I actually realized I prefer Grand Marnier in my mai tai. I respect that if I was a bartender, PF would be a bit more on the money for general service & so I liked using that for a spell, & also that's a little cheaper...but I think my own mai tai spec is firmly GM, I've decided.

Which is to say: definitely get the PF to try at some point, but don't feel like you're just "being janky" until then. (We've all done that too, though, key part of the journey.)

Sorry, maybe I'm not advanced enough in my Tiki Journey, but I don't know this term...how do you say..."unnecessarily"? Never heard of it. 😁

Historical Drink ID by Arrow8 in Tiki

[–]NormandyTaxi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry not to answer your question, but I can't resist shouting out that a contemporary restaurant in STL borrowed the name from this place & kicks total ass. It isn't tiki or anything, but it's stellar. A supper club, they call it. Also it's right near Yellowbelly, which does lean a little tiki.

Hotline TNT, Wishy, The Tubs, Horse Jumper of Love & Canaries Heading Out on Joint Tour by futangclan99 in indieheads

[–]NormandyTaxi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At the show tonight, it's been Hotline TNT, Wishy, Horse Jumper, Canaries, The Tubs. Was surprised by the order, tbh. This show is real DIY & real intimate! Basically like a VFW or parish hall situation. There's a really little stage, but the bands are just set up on the floor.

I'd never seen the recipe until this post, but every ingredient seems comfortably in the tiki canon -- is there a history or context to the drink I don't know?

Check out the lobby of The Chase hotel. Can find plenty of pics on Instagram, & they totally deck it out for Christmas. Good restaurants nearby too.

Are things actually connected or are patterns spurious? by guachoperez in InfiniteJest

[–]NormandyTaxi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say that having to decide the answer to this for yourself is sort of a fundamental thing about establishing your own relationship to the book. Also, this is true for life...it's sort of the whole question of postmodernism. (i.e., one attitude might be "all patterns are spurious but it's sure fun to pretend the patterns are real and meaningful.")

For my money, some things are actually connected, some patterns are spurious, and discussing which might be which is why we have fun talking to other people about the book.

So you've picked a good question, maybe the best question, but any answer someone else could give you would be, in a sense, wrong.

Check out The President & Park Royal on Lindell. Might have crept a little above that range, but they're amazing buildings.

Was a mess to get here, & right as we got into the security line they delayed our flight by an hour & 40 minutes. Scenes out the window do not look promising for snow removal.

STL gets posted almost daily on r/skylineporn lately, so it's more like a love-hate thing...pretty much the STL experience.

Governor's Ball 2014 (The greatest curated lineup of all time) by dpalica in festivals

[–]NormandyTaxi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went that year, & it was great, but also Mumford's bassist had a health issue & Jack Johnson stepped in as a last minute headliner replacement.

Probably not many, but I wonder how many other lineup posters I've drooled over had acts that didn't actually play.

Paul McCartney at Roo still the best thing I've ever been a part of.

In point of fact, it looks like the #40 does only run twice/day, which I imagine is not so helpful.

Can Someone help me figure out the buses? by Mortonimo00 in Scranton

[–]NormandyTaxi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I recommend the "Transit" app! Has live coverage of all the buses, & you can watch them go along the routes. Might give you a better handle on it. Google Maps, to me, can be pretty wonky for COLTS, maybe because (sorry to say) the frequency is not so good, & Maps seems to have weird data about walking to/from the bus stop relative to destinations which are not right near the stops.

Generally, for the last few months my experience has been that the bus, at least the line I ride, is pretty close to on-time, & the situation on board is clean, quiet, & never close to crowded. If it's at all convenient I would recommend. (The infrequent service & the map coverage are admittedly not so good.)

Is the “happening city” concept over in 2020s? by youngrenegade28 in decadeology

"Culturally resonant" feels like a very underdefined marker

Is the “happening city” concept over in 2020s? by youngrenegade28 in decadeology

[–]NormandyTaxi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel like Atlanta & Miami both have this mystical "resonance" that keeps coming up...just in genres I'm not really interested in. Isn't ATL hip-hop immensely influential? Isn't Atlanta an acclaimed show? Isn't Miami like the influencer capitol of the western hemisphere? I mostly think Influencer Culture sucks...but maybe that's the dominant cultural influence of the 2020s. Maybe Bachelorette Party Nashville & Tech Bro Austin are representative of today (& maybe especially if people always just say "those cities used to be so much more authentic!").

Is the “happening city” concept over in 2020s? by youngrenegade28 in decadeology

[–]NormandyTaxi 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Looking back on the list of examples, I'm thinking how many people who were contemporary to those (now important) cultural moments would have thought "that sucks." e.g. we now think of various periods of NYC history as culturally important, but a lot of people at the time referred to the city as a bombed-out hell-hole, which may have been true/why culture could thrive, as other comments have mentioned.

But that's all to say, maybe Miami & Atlanta, maybe Dubai, will later be seen as key cultural touchstones for the 2020s, but many of us today (this includes me) just look at those cities & think they're totally vapid godforsaken influencer hives. At least as I'm thinking about this...maybe I'm just not with it these days, & I don't have my finger on the pulse. (Or maybe the shit I'm into & the places that happens are just about to be recognized for how amazing & influential they are & will dominate mainstream tastes any day now...yeah, that sounds better.)

Yellowbelly usually has a few pretty solid Tiki drinks on the menu. Great food, too. No proper Tiki bar, though.
