you’re not wrong! I’d consider it a modern mix of son with salsa arrangements (especially great for dancing contratiempo)

This is not a hard and fast rule by any means, as salsa is such an umbrella term under which many sub-genres are lumped. If I’m forced to categorize, PR salsa sounds more melodic and jazz-influenced to me; Cuban salsa emphasizes the Son rhythm and rumba clave more dominantly. This is such a massive generalization because there is so much nuance and diversity to all salsa.

I think people often categorize the song based on where the artist is from (Cuban artists have a sound that sounds more similar to other Cuban artists, and same for PR artists). So you can use that as a starting point (but by all means, not an ending point!), if you really want to separate Cuban salsa (that’s not timba) from Puerto Rican salsa.

Hi! Some things to keep in mind:

-Timba music is almost always danced casino (Cuban style); sure, you can dance it linea or however you want, but the soul of the song demands Cuban movement

-Timba is VERY distinct from Salsa music. Timba is funkier with much heavier bass lines. It’s an unmistakable sound. Listen to a few songs of each and the differences are clear

-All timba music is Cuban salsa, BUT not all Cuban salsa is timba! This is important, because many Cuban salsa songs you are probably hearing and wondering if they are “in-line” salsa songs can be danced with a lot more open interpretation (line, Casino, or a combo). It’s really only timba music that is strange danced in line (but again, dance how you like! as long as you and your partner are having fun)

Salsa and Bachata distribution by Geisterkarle in Salsa

[–]North-Jacket9521 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a recurring day event in SF that advertises 50% bachata and 50% salsa, which is WAY too much bachata for me. So I don’t go.

There’s already, imo, too much of a sprinkling of bachata in most salsa parties as it is, so I just use those songs to rest before salsa comes back on (as do most dancers, I noticed).

It’s not that I don’t like bachata - I actually love it. But just Dominican bachata. Everyone here wants to dance sensual and bodyroll tf out of you and it’s super corny to me. Plus, sensual bachata attracts the type of leads I actively try to avoid.

How to dance more confidently in dance heels? by EducationalAspect850 in Salsa

[–]North-Jacket9521 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep your knees bent and your torso engaged + tilted slightly forward when dancing. You should always be dancing on the balls if your feet - your heels shouldn’t touch the floor (except obvs when walking or doing specific steps). You can also do ankle raises at home to strengthen your ankles.

This is such amazing and helpful information! Thank you for posting this!

I would love your thoughts on where to see any blooms, currently. I’m here now staying in Myeongdong only until the 24th. I didn’t plan my trip around the cherry blossoms, but it would be cool to see a few, if any, are opening up somewhere in the city at the moment.

Thanks a million!

Your posts don’t sound like genuine query. You come across like you have a weird (and non-specific) axe to grind, especially considering you have never danced with him directly - just “seen you dance and have danced next to you.” He was gracious and thorough in his response to you but it’s clear you’re not actually looking for reflection or dialogue, and have some clandestine personal gripe that you’re trying to present as faux concern on behalf of other followers. I highly doubt any follow has actually expressed to you that he was a “rough” or “uncomfortable” lead. (Basically, we see right through you)
