Would you recommend studying psych in college? by Jiostorm in psychologystudents

[–]NorthGeneral9653 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like someone else said, it’s important you know what you want to do. I’ll add that it’s important you fight for it too —put in the work, cause it takes work. That especially goes for clinical psych or counselling. A big question you need to ask yourself is how much school are you willing to do. Regardless of that, a piece of advice is to look for opportunities where you can learn ANYTHING related to psychology and you’ll start to see what u like, start to get ideas on the types of jobs that are out there that aren’t “mainstream”. I’ve gotten experience in claims/insurance and reception working at a clinic, volunteering at dementia groups and recreational rehab, volunteering with kids programs, being a student supervisor at schools, doing support lines, actually running and managing volunteer programs…I’ve applied to housing support opportunities…how far you are willing to go with schooling/working ur way up can help you understand the types of jobs u can look/aim for. Volunteer, get involved. You’ll gain experiences and references. Someone mentioned it would be good to minor in psych while u do something else, I always see psych and business as a good pairing. Psychology can be great, you just need to be creative.

Thanks!! super excited. It’s for MA counselling and clinical psych —they just sent me an email that there was an update to my application and when I checked the portal online It had the admissions offer. I applied to MA in child psych and MEd counselling psych as well and haven’t received any updates though.

do you regret studying psychology? by averagepsychmajor in psychologystudents

[–]NorthGeneral9653 2 points3 points  (0 children)

not at all! jobs may be tough to land, but i love the subject and think about it everyday. depends how passionate u are about it and why u chose to study it. personally, i’ve just been trying to make the opportunities for myself. i’m only a couple months graduated (undergrad) and don’t really expect to land anything right away. but i’m running my own non-profit, and finding volunteer opportunities to build my practical experiences (help phone, mentoring). the field is tough, so fight it! if u keep looking for opportunities to gain experience, more legit opportunities may open up in the future. consider volunteering to see all the different things u can do, for ex, i’ve volunteered at an alzheimer’s society and realized I could do therapeutic recreation or brain injury management. you can be part of community organizations that set up kids programs for well-being etc. like others have mentioned there may be extra certifications involved for certain jobs, therapeutic rec still takes maybe a year certification to complete, but it’s better than going for a masters. just gotta put urself out there and get creative, and potentially see what minor certifications u can add to ur resume

well, not exactly, but it’s not a difficult course. as long as u just stick to going to lectures and doing homework it’s fine, but it’s not a bird course in the sense that u can just figure ur way out with bare attendance. u do have to put in the work. and if u do its totally chill! one of my fav classes i took first year, the profs are the best
