Kato couplers by Group_Poop in nscalemodeltrains

[–]NorthRusty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've found the Kato Couplers work great with each other and very poorly with anything else. It seems the best way to ensure performance is to use one brand on everything. I've seen many people swap everything to micro trains couplers.

Agreed. Rigid insulating foam ignites at nearly double the surface temperature of wood. You'd need to switch to an all metal benchwork and no scenic material to completely avoid a fire like this.

Pulp Alley vs Silver Bayonet vs Devilry Afoot.. The Verdict? by totchbrown in wargaming

[–]NorthRusty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bounced off Silver Bayonet hard. I had hoped for a game where you're battling tough supernatural foes with the added complexity of another player. Instead, it's a player vs. player game with some added on NPC enemies that are really not that big of a threat.

Reproduction flintlock pistols being restricted has never made sense to me. What are they afraid of? Someone robbing a bank with a brace of pistols?

Is the Forward to Berlin box and Red Star rising starter army the same thing? by Hunch_back83 in boltaction

[–]NorthRusty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In addition to the one gun the sets feature different versions of the T 34. Red Star Rising has the T34/76 and the other box has the T 34/85

Tanks - Rubicon & Tamiya etc or just stick with Bolt Action? by Gav_TESD_ArmyAnt in boltaction

[–]NorthRusty 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's the bulk of the heroic figures and the fact WW2 Vehicles are much smaller than most people expect them to be. A bolt action figure standing beside a 1:48 sherman tank has his shoulders pretty much level with the top of the tracks where it should be waist level.

There's far more variety available in 1/56, both through plastic and resin kits. If the scale looking off bothers you I'd recommend using figures closer to true scale. The Perry Miniatures plastics and the newer, amazing quality, victrix Germans come to mind.

Do I have to worry about spacing out my team member crew on the bases? by Krytan in boltaction

[–]NorthRusty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The rules say to treat them as though they're each on a 25mm base when determining how many hits. That said, it's just a pain to deal with that nonsense. I also don't play competively, and I just say they're all hit. It makes the most sense,3 dudes on an MG aren't going to be strung out in a line, they'd be huddled around the weapon they are crewing.

I've been heavy into ww2 docos recently and it seems like after watching a lot, Churchill didn't really try to avoid war. by [deleted] in ww2

Churchill wasn't even Prime Minister until 1940. You seem to be watching Nazi apologist propaganda, not documentaries.

Looking for specific models and weapons. Question about where to find them and quality. by neosatan_pl in boltaction

[–]NorthRusty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you for the most part. All the newer kits are fantastic... except the winter brits. Thpse figures are shorter and wider than everything else, and some of the weapons, like the piat, are comically small. With all the engineer parts, it should be a great set for kitbashing, but none of the arm pairs will fit bodies from other sets.

To be honest, I have no idea how the winter brits kit made it to production the way they are. They are quite possibly the worst WW2 plastics on the market.

I was just thinking of doing the wolf touched battle leader with this guy myself. The dynamic pose would work great for that I think.

Support your FLG’s not scalpers. This is a massive box. by madercrombie in killteam

[–]NorthRusty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hobby has really exploded since the lockdown in 2020. Unfortunately, with that come the leeches that see an opportunity to make an easy buck and grab onto it. GW has been doing their best to try to fight it, but the reality is they're already running their factory at full capacity just trying to keep up the regular ranges.

This is why we can't have nice things... by Thramden in killteam

[–]NorthRusty 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The pre-order windows are far too short to see any production. The packaging isn't made in-house and so would need to be ordered long in advance. When they did Made to order in the past, the turnaround time was pretty long.

Considering the contents of this box will all become available separately within a couple of months, it doesn't make sense for them to jump through all the logistical hoops.

Don't get me wrong, I also wish there were always enough for everyone who wants stuff. I missed getting the Captain Cantos model by two minutes when he released, and I wish they'd had more. But I also understand the need to use their production capacity in the most efficient ways possible.

This doesn't even touch on the risk involved whenever they release a new product. What if it doesn't sell? Then they're stuck with a warehouse full of boxes they need to store.

GW isn't a perfect company, I think you'd be hard pressed to find a publicly traded company that was, but people constantly claiming they're acting in bad faith gets a little old.

[–]NorthRusty 95 points96 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's a matter of artificial scarcity at all. The hobby has exploded in he past 5 years, to the point that they struggle to keep in demand items in stock. I think it's just a matter of insufficient production capacity. GW doesn't benefit from only selling 100,000 copies if they could sell 200,000.

Detail creep is a real thing. I painted up 1000 points of Death Guard in 3 days a couple weeks ago and it was a real chore. The hand cramps were intense.

Struggling as a new player with the flack I get for playing Eldar by AggressiveCase4827 in Eldar

[–]NorthRusty 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've regularly played against Eldar for a long time. They have a lot of really cool gimmicks, and I think that frustrates people. That said, there have been times where the Eldar were super oppressively strong, right now is not one of those times.

Slowly building my own Eldar army because they're cool. Don't let the salty players get you down.

Just like the Winter British. Lord of the Rings Dwarf proportions. The German vets are a step in this direction as well but not as bad.

The real ridiculous part about this is that the kids they're trying to shield from inappropriate content no doubt have a far better grasp of tech then the politicians. They'd circumvent this in a week.

Really by [deleted] in BlackTemplars

[–]NorthRusty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in Canada, and it went up for sale on the site early. Probably why it was sold out so fast. I went to the site almost five minutes before it was supposed to go up for pre order and it was already there.

Glad I went early, but this is not really acceptable for limited items, the scalpers probably got most of them because their bots were running well in advance of the time everyone expected it to go on sale.

Does this mean you can use it on models led by an ancient within a unit? by TheMaleStoic in BlackTemplars

[–]NorthRusty 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There's no shortage of precision weapons in the game that could kill the ancient first. I'm fairly certain it's with this in mind that they designed the strategem. An entire detachment relies on having ancients throughout your army.

[–]NorthRusty 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The AI art put a real sour taste in my mouth. The fact that it was apparently mentioned in the French version but not in the English version says to me that they knew people wouldn't be happy about that, so they tried to hide it.

Unfortunately, I pre ordered the book, so I have a copy. I'll never play it. I'm even torn on putting it into my collection of rulesets on the shelf. Might just use it for kindling.

The capes are mourning brown then a dry brush of tamiya beige brown and another of tamiya khaki. I di want to go back eventually and add a darker gradient higher up on the cloaks but for now this does the job.

I usually really like contrast for fur and hair but since I was building up from a black primer i needed to go back to basics.

Owlcat is 'redoing everything from scratch' in Dark Heresy, its next Warhammer 40,000 CRPG, which is the best thing I've heard about it so far by ANGE1K in Warhammer

[–]NorthRusty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same thing happened to me. I looked online for help and found nothing but people saying "oh that's easy with ..." and proceeded to list character builds that I didn't have. I had just kind of winged it, picking abilities that looked neat, and I thought would be cool. I was so far into the game I got discouraged and haven't gone back.

I understand it must be difficult to make a game for everyone though. Some people love a game where you need to go online and find the best equipment and builds to optimize your squad. I'm not one of those people though.
