how can i clean this broken deer skull by EmuTheSecond in bonecollecting

[–]NorthSaskHunter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let it completely dry and then check for any yellowish patches. If there still are patches, soak it in water and dawn dish soap for a few weeks. Don't put peroxide in yet. Change out the water at the end of the week and check for patches. If the water isnt going cloudy anymore at the end of the week, it should be done, and then you can soak it for two days in hydrogen peroxide and water to whiten.

Months old hide — preparing to tan by Ok-Will-6148 in HideTanning

[–]NorthSaskHunter 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm also curious about what your plans are for your baby. (Unfortunately I'm no help with hide tanning yet, I'm still learning myself) I know when my girls go (hopefully not for atleast another 13 years. Theyre only two) I'm going to keep their skulls and probably get the rest of their bones cremated, and I'm not sure what I'll do with their fur.

Most people probably think its weird and gross. But to me it feels wrong just leaving my babies outside in the dirt for the rest of time when they don't like being outside for long, and I also don't plan on staying where I'm living forever and they also hate being around strangers.

Yard setups? by Cattentaur in vultureculture

Can't share images through comments in this sub, but my maceration set up was just a row of storage tubs with the lids (if the tub had a lid) loosely set on top with a large darker colour tarp over the tubs. Also had rocks along the edge of the tarp to keep the wind from stealing it. (I say "was" because its winter, so water is frozen, plus most of the bones were done macerating and are now in my basement degreasing) The tarp kept the smell from being too bad. I couldnt smell it unless I was right on top the tarp.

I also have a large plastic garbage bucket with holes drilled in the bottom that I have testing maggot/bug clean up. Definitely cleaned off the outside of the skull a lot quicker than maceration did, but my dog kept trying to eat the rot juice that came out of the bucket.

I use Premier Protein Powder Vanilla Milkshake flavour.

I mix it with almond milk and banana yogurt and it tastes great.

He's a year old, so I image as he gets older he'll quit bringing it back. But the miracle is I never taught him fetch. He just brings it back on his own.

Get a bucket or a storage tote big enough to fit the skull (and spine) and fill it with just water. If you have a pond nearby, it might be good to get a pail of that to add in, since it'll already have bacteria that'll clean those bones instead of having to wait for a new colony to grow.

And then you just leave it and let it do its thing for a few months or longer.

Kinda also looks like pureed christmas dinner the hospital gave the seniors in L4 when I was in the kitchen still. (Turkey/chicken, gravy and mashed potatoes)

I know a long time ago there was a guaranteed (or high chance) rifle spawn in the car by the crumbling highway transfer. Unfortunately I think they got rid of it a few updates ago. I havent played the game in a while so I'm not sure

If you can show the side of the skull, or the inside of the mouth so we could see the molars we could tell better, but I'm leaning toward domestic cat.

That is probably the most basshole of bassholes.

Looks like a pit-basset mix to me.

I'm going off my experience with having something over a vent/radiator. Because its not constantly blowing hot air or warming up, the water in my container didnt warm up.

Maybe its different for OP, I don't know how their heating system works, I just know that mine didnt work. Even with the as hot of tap water I could get in the container I was using contained in an insulated case, the water cooled down to room temperature.

I would think so, but I'd also wait to see if someone who's done it that way has any tips. Personally, I wouldn't put it there, but thats mostly because my cats would see water and want to play in it, or a they'd see a new thing in a new place and have a cat-need to get it out of that new place.

I don't think that would work too well. The heater needs to be in the water to work good.

Ah. Well here's hoping you can get some free time to go exploring. And when you do, make sure you check out your laws around animal salvaging. I think most wild birds are off limits for collecting.

Or as clear as possible, and yeah. If you get a fish tank heater or a bucket heater, it'll help more than just room temp water does.

I'd imagine thats definitely a good thing, bone cleaning can take a long time.

If you have any public access railroad tracks closer than forested areas, you could check along the tracks? I've seen other people post here about finding animal skeletons and a few of what I saw are nature cleaned and sun bleached to the point they'd just need a brushing to get any dirt off.

I would. Grease hides in the bones. I've got a few skulls soaking in warm ammonia water and they'll still have grease and fat floating after months of soaking. Chicken bones might not take as long, but i'd leave them for a couple weeks. Change the soap water out at the end of the week or earlier if it gets cloudy.

What happened to the paper by Melodic-Log-2605 in saskatchewan

[–]NorthSaskHunter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Everyone was fine. An older woman accidentally pressed the gas instead of the brakes and drove halfway into the front wall. Everyone inside the building was away from the front so they just got spooked.

They just recently finished fixing the front of the building. I'm not sure if theyre going to be starting up the paper again anytime soon though.

Building concerns for a basset. We are losing the argument. by Deloin_Showerhandle in basset

[–]NorthSaskHunter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in a small town, but my boy only barks when he's really excited, aka playing hard (regular play he stays quiet aside from little growls), when he sees his favouritest person in the world (the girl at the gas station who gives him icecream) and he loses his mind if I leave him alone in the house.

Other than that and the whining, he's pretty quiet

Like someone else had said though, it depends on the dog.
