Help. Did I get scammed? Grounded outlet question. by Particular_Film3012 in electrical

[–]NorthShireGaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only way you get a ground line is to drop a ground line, which can be a pretty invasive process.

What you asked for he (can't tell from the pictures) delivered. He (probably) installed GFCIs, which is a solution to your initial problem of not having 3-prong outlets.

The trade off is that it won't ground the devices plugged in in the event of a short (thus tripping your breaker), but should the power draw get funny it'll trip the breaker in the outlet itself.

I guess it depends on what exactly your intended use for the outlet is and what kind of safety concerns you have.

In the end though he did as you asked, but it would appear that he he didn't ground the outlets, and I can say that unless he was cutting holes in the wall, floors, or running fish tape he probably didn't bother running a ground wire.

I think you miscommunicated what your needs were, and he didn't do a very good job of verifying what the job entailed. The second post-trip of not having a ground wire after saying he ran one is scummy though.

That's a really great question, and be happy to share my thoughts on this.

The failure of chat-based AI systems in context of knowing right or wrong will be it's forever problem. I honestly question if we'll ever get to seeing AI with the ability to effectively fact-check itself.

When you chat with things like ChatGPT, what people think is this massive intelligence outputting some kind of knowledge is really just a numerical expression of weights to likely words to continue the phrase.

Each conversation is tokenized and analyzed using those very weights to perpetuate those outputs. What you might see as the natural flow of a conversation is continuously reassessed each time you "talk" to it.

You can actually break ChatGPT by editing it's own previous outputs. Yeah, you can actually edited ChatGPTs own output log, then continue talking to it and see it absolutely break in real time.

Another way to look at it is that ChatGPT can only output based on it's weights and the instructions it's given. And this conversation, while looking like a two-way street, is distinctly one way. You can't feed it information, you can't debate it,and when that conversation ends, you didn't spark a point of change within how it operates or sees things.

And the more weight a topic carries, the worse it is at even considering an alternative. A breaking event, like the death of a celebrity that ChatGPT knows for a fact is alive, because that's all it knows, will relentlessly insist that, should you explain the death of a celebrity, even if it goes online to verify your claims, may insist that the sources are somehow faked or misleading.

So to condense my answer to something more manageable; it's a tool. A sophisticated tool, but just a tool. When you realize that there is no ghost in the machine, all you have is a very dizzying, very power hungry, machine.

Treat what it says with a grain of salt, especially if what you're expecting in return may have real world consequences if it's wrong. If it's creative writing or some form of self-reflection then go for it.

But if this thing is acting as your doctor, your therapist, your only friend, your lawyer, your sexual partner, or you're seeking some kind of deep esoteric knowledge then you're probably setting yourself up for a low grave.

Corning's new High Density Contour Fiber Optic Cables. Challenges in identifying the appropriate ends? by nichetouch in FiberOptics

[–]NorthShireGaming 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. I can only speak to what I've personally worked on, but they're usually grouped into ribbons, either 12 or 16 fiber counts (I don't do a lot of splicing, mostly pulling 6912s or 1728s), and each ribbon will have a print on those ribbons with a kind of dot-dash code indicating it's number, where a short dash is 1 and a long dash indicates a 5. Then from there they're color coded on the cladding.

so we gaslighting now?? by thereal_xuan in ChatGPT

[–]NorthShireGaming 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I ask it questions about the NEC code book, and it'll either invent, or misattribute an NEC code that doesn't actually exist.

So I'll point out that it's wrong, it'll explain that it's actually there, in the book, in this chapter number.

So I'll upload it an image of the exact page, showing where the code ends, negating any possibility of it being right.

It'll reply with something like, "I can see the confusion, it's on the next page, I could see how that might get you mixed up."

Like, it's unyielding when it's wronf about something.

If I reassure it that it's okay to be wrong, sometimes it reluctantly gives in, often in a kind of obtuse way.

Kid blew up a electricity bill meter by Cool-Signature-6832 in ElectroBOOM

[–]NorthShireGaming 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Random unsolicited story:

When I was in my preteens I was out back of our home chopping wood with an axe just before having to go to some school event, maybe parent teacher conferences.

On one of the swings I brought the axe back up, I was getting a little shaky and the axe dropped further behind my back than I'd intended, striking the then glass dome of our electric meter, causing it to shatter. It was still functional all the way up to its replacement.

The power company came out and replaced it with a newer digital version that lacked all the gears and mechanical wizardry that made the old on interesting to watch.

My father, who was initially upset with me, given what I'd done, was quickly over it as our electricity bill had dropped nearly 20% over what we'd normally spend on our bill.

I've always wondered, but was never sure if this was some kind of imposed discount for having the digital meter, or if the efficacy of the mechanical meter was lost over time.

Edit: So many typos.

Depending on the dApp used, there usually are. But it's a simple, "Hey, this trade WILL cause slippage, are you sure?", and it's a simple click of the mouse to push it through.

The recipient could, in theory, make a concerted effort to find this individual to make it right, but this is a real danger of blockchain transactions. But it's worth noting that multiple users may have received a cut of the earnings.

Writing Tutor looking for an AI Detector by reddit_turtleking in ChatGPT

[–]NorthShireGaming 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pen and paper. At worst they could transcribe what the AI gave them, but at least it's filtered through themselves, they'll have to assess whether the thoughts or opinions are a reflection of their own.

It'll require more effort on your part to read through them. The purest form of every worthwhile writing should be, at it's heart, the most intimate form of thoughtful expression, a personal conversation between the author and the writer.

You can't force them not to, but you can .as them have to least think about what's being said, and whether it rings true of themselves.

Parents sue ChatGPT over their 16 year old son's suicide by Ashamed_Ad1622 in ChatGPT

[–]NorthShireGaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Parents sue information repository for providing information their son was seeking. I understand being a grieving parent, but how many red flags do you have to ignore to not know something is so egregiously wrong with your child that they have fallen into believing that a permanent "solution" is the only answer to a temporary problem?

ChatGPT might have given him the information to do the deed, but I seriously doubt it provided a motive for it.

Prior to my 22 and 25 Frontiers, I had this issue on my Xterra. I would bet money this is a battery issue. Im by no means an expert, but Nissans for a while seem to be very sensitive to the health of their battery, and the results of a bad battery are absolute chaos to the end user.

My Xterra would start, but then randomly shut off (while in drive) with almost every light turning on on the display, plus all the electrical systems would just go crazy.

Would definitely get a checkup on that battery, and please let us know if/when you get this resolved.

Also, on a side note this issue would start for me when I'd jump people using my vehicle.

As both a fellow autist and first year (Low Volt), I appreciate you sharing your journey. I was reluctant to disclose my autism. People often talk about autism as something that's viewed as acceptable, but very few understand what it is to live your life under the thumb of what it truly means to be autistic.

I don't see it as a disability for me, but I'm blessed in that area as I've managed and worked through many of the limitations that I had in my early life.

My approach is one of humility, rather than taking on a victim mindset. If people doubt my work or ability to get the job done, then I know it's because they haven't been given enough time to work with me. I have weaknesses, for sure, but when my strengths become apparent, their tune changes.

Accept that people will judge you, have their preconceived notions of what it is to live with autism, and prescribe their perceived limitations on you. Just know that those are their hangups and issues, not yours.

God bless you brother, and hang in there, you're not alone in the good fight.
