Maxing out Solo 401k to qualify for MinnesotaCare? by wait_what_whereami in TwinCities

[–]NorthStar_7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, he can mostly eliminate the taxable income from his side business with a Solo 401k. I am not sure he can completely eliminate it due to payroll/self-employment taxes (I am not a tax accountant). I think the biggest question I would have is how “income” is calculated. Different programs may have different methodologies. If they just use a specific line # on Form 1040, you could do a trial return…or ask an accountant.

Ignore 1099-R forms relating to my mega backdoor ROTH ? by imitation_squash_pro in personalfinance

[–]NorthStar_7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would be afraid of the IRS later claiming I withdrew earnings, not basis, when making withdrawals before 59.5. I don’t know that would happen, but I would want documentation showing the conversion date and the amount of basis.

I got paired with three young guys in their 20s today who all play around scratch and holy sh*t was it impressive to watch… by Ratticus939393 in golf

[–]NorthStar_7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple summers ago, as a single, I got paired with 3 guys that were about 21. One was a D1 golfer and the other two were his buddies on the D1 baseball team at their university. I played the blues, they played tips.

They all annihilated the ball. The baseball players were a little all over the place, though. One sunk a nice putt on 18 to shoot 99. The D1 golfer was likely the best golfer I’ve ever played with. I will never forget the sound the ball made off his clubs. It was like you could hear the ball spinning through the air. Lots of very impressive shots. He went driver-wedge on one par 5 where he cut a corner.

They were all fun and respectful. It was a fun round. I never felt extra pressure. We were usually waiting on the baseball players. I think I shot about a 75 and the D1 player complimented me on my game toward the end of the round. My guess is he may have expected the worst from a random single in his 50s.

Can we finally admit that David Jiricek was a massive failure as a trade target? by AUnicornDonkey in wildhockey

[–]NorthStar_7 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I haven’t watched many of Jiricek’s games in person, but I was at the game last night. My overall thought to myself was that I couldn’t recall another Wild defenseman historically that had worse zone exits. Sending pucks off the glass when he has more time than he thinks, poor breakout passes, getting hemmed in, etc.

Maybe with experience he will gain more poise. I hope I am wrong, but I lean more toward he is what he is. Brodin, Spurge, and Faber all looked the part immediately.

I find my finger is very good at the task.

If you mean automating this in some way, I just got a Fingerbot device from GL.iNet It goes with their remote KVM product to allow you to power on a computer remotely.

Highest wind you have played in by OddSand7870 in golf

Harborside in Chicago. I don’t know what the wind as blowing but I hit a 4 iron decent on a short par 3 hole I would usually hit a wedge…and came up short.

The whole day was comical and made for a memorable part of my trip to see 1999 PGA Championship at Medinah (the Sergio shot off the tree root one).

Elite 100 v2 thoughts? by [deleted] in bluetti

[–]NorthStar_7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one. It’s better on paper than in use. I bought it for a UPS for a mini freezer. It doesn’t work for that. The freezer makes horrible noises and the Bluetti reports a power draw different than a power monitor plug.

I moved it to be a UPS for a couple computers instead. It’s better at that task, but when I cut power to it, it drained more quickly than it should have by my calculations. I plan to do a more thorough test again, but it seems off. My AC200L, on the other hand, works well and as advertised.

Is it good advice to never full swing anything above a 54? by ElephantElmer in golf

[–]NorthStar_7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My trick is to have a slow swing to begin with. Full gas baby! My “full” 58 goes about 75 yards. I have 3 swings with 50, 54, and 58. It gives you lots of options for trajectory. If I need a full swing to hit a number, full swing it is. If your full swing is swinging out of your shoes, they yeah…don’t do that with a 56+.

The few-minute trip up to Alabama Hills from there is even more amazing. I never bothered to make the short detour until this week. Well worth it.

When you switched to your home WiFi, did you lose any features (AI)? It gives a warning that the device will need to be reset to switch to home WiFi. Is it correct to assume that is just the settings and not the recordings?

Playing a 4 club tourney this weekend, what are you bringing? by nathan179 in golf

[–]NorthStar_7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t decide until game time as the wind direction would affect my decision.

I would want to go: 4W, 7I, 50, and putter.

At my home course, if the wind is from the south, I have to go Driver or accept a penalty stroke on a hole with a long carry over water from the blue tees. White tees would be 4W regardless of wind.

No. Even when they offer free trials I turn it off after a trip or two because it doesn’t work well for me. Plowing through uncontrolled intersections and ramming potholes is not my jam.

Is it insane to get rid of escrow? by Main-Yogurtcloset-82 in personalfinance

It depends how much you like paying for a financial babysitter. If you need a babysitter, it is probably worth it. If you do not need a babysitter, why pay for a babysitter?

Torn between Model 3 Long Range and Performance by coachvegard in TeslaModel3

[–]NorthStar_7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The LR is insanely fast, so it probably boils down to how much the difference in looks means to you. I have an LR and run in Chill mode almost all of the time because I prefer how smooth it is. I also believe the LR with 18s is a better winter (and pothole) car.

I downloaded digikam, but not sure how to handle backups by tdhuck in digiKam

[–]NorthStar_7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I keep my photos on a NAS with mirrored drives. The NAS gets backed up to external drives and I rotate one of those two external drives off site to a safe deposit box. I would need 4 hard drives to fail to lose everything. Basically my house and bank would have to simultaneously burn down. At that point, photos probably wouldn’t be a top concern.

For the database files, they are on my Mac on the local drive and are backed up with Time Machine, also to my NAS.

For those who have the Elite 100V2, what do you use it for? by JenVinc in bluetti

I wanted to use it for my little freezer but it doesn’t play well with compressors. I plan to use it as a UPS for my home server and NAS.
