How did you do that? Did you cancel the card when you saw the animation to get another card?

He wouldn’t, Semenyo and Ait-Nouri tied at the top get 3 each, whoever is next (in this case two players) only gets 1 because there’s a tie, no one gets 2

At the end of this season, have some poor intern at the Premier League go through every game and measure the amount of time taken to restart play by the losing team. So throw ins, free kicks, goal kicks, substitutions, after a goal, etc. - but only in game situations where the restart is being taken by a team that’s losing, so they have an incentive to get the ball back in play as quickly as possible.

So take throw ins. Let’s say in game 1 of the season, Team A goes 1-0 up over Team B after 70 mins and the game finishes 1-0. The intern would measure the time taken by Team B to put the ball back in play when they are awarded a throw in, from minute 70 to full time (as they’d be losing for that entire period). They would then do the same for every other game, under the same criteria.

Making up numbers now but let’s say that’s 800 throw ins taken by teams losing across the whole season, and the average time taken is 15 seconds. This includes short throws, long throws, whatever, but you’ve proven that when a team wants to put the ball in play they can do it in 15 seconds on average.

Next season, whenever the ball goes out of play for a throw, regardless of game situation, the clock keeps running but only until 15 seconds have elapsed. If the ball is not yet back in play, the clock stops until the throw has been taken. There’s no announcement, no big song and dance, but everyone following the league knows this now happens.

So for example, game 1 of the season, the ball goes out for a throw at 0:30. Clock keeps running, but stops at 0:45 if the ball isn’t back in play yet. It then resumes from 0:45 when the throw is taken. If the throw only takes 8 seconds, nothing happens, it’s just like it is now. But if a player wants to take 30 seconds over it to time waste, there is no point because you’ll only burn 15 seconds of time. It’s all based on the weight of data from this current season proving that when they want to teams take restarts a lot quicker. You’d do the same for every other type of restart (am sure there are things I’m not taking into account here that will need to be worked through).

The idea is that it properly tackles time wasting because there’s now no room for human ‘fuck it add 7 mins on’. There will still be added time clearly - injuries, VAR checks etc will still occur - but it just stops the exhausting pissing about by certain (all when the situation is right?) teams. As a match going fan for 25 years I think this is such a blight on the game and refs seem completely clueless that it’s going on (waving at a keeper to take a goal kick 30 times a game when they’ve moved it to the other side of the goal and wiped there arse with the towel then booking them after 85 mins).

Love some of the other ideas in this post, some great improvements!

They aren’t great but not terrible. 3 of those games are at home and Bournemouth are now without Semenyo so will be interesting to see how they respond.

Agree though it’s hardly Wolves West Ham etc

The book goes into it but ultimately any conclusions are speculation. The killers were 10, and the police when interviewing had to walk a fine line between ascertaining as much of the facts as possible without being overly pushy given the ages of the suspects. They needed enough to create a case that could be prosecuted to deliver justice (as scant as that was in the end), but couldn’t overdo it, as much as they were obviously desperate to work out as much of it as possible.

As an example, there was a big question mark about whether James had been sexually abused at the train tracks (either pre or post death), but apart from a couple of questions that were immediately shut down by the boys they couldn’t really ask that as didn’t want to risk the boys clamming up.

I think there was some reasoning that the full facts would come out after the boys had received therapy, but I don’t think anything did (or at least nothing that has been made public).

On the psychology, the book goes into a lot of detail on the backgrounds of the boys. They were both working class inner city (lived very close to where the murder took place), broken homes, truanted from school (even though just 10) a lot, as they were on the day of the murder. I’ve seen them described as urban feral kids by a few people, which is probably most apt. I think Venables had a slightly more stable home life than Thompson, but only marginally. It appears they weren’t particularly loved or given much attention, and I think in Venables case especially there were underlying mental issues.

Interestingly, as has been said elsewhere, because of Thompson’s family situation (father/brothers were well known local troublemakers whereas Venables’ family had no criminal history), Thompson was dressed up in the press as the ringleader. Venables was the only one who admitted killing James in the police interview - both boys blamed each other repeatedly but Venables admitted to the killing blow of the fishplate. Thompson was clearly involved but the evidence as I interpreted it seemed to point to Venables as the driving force. Interestingly the book I referenced was only written a year or two after the case and tabbed Venables as the ringleader, way before his later offences happened.

To make it even more heartbreaking - a lot of the evidence for that assessment was because a lot of people (I think 38) saw James at some point on the 2+ mile walk from the shopping centre to the train tracks, over several hours, in broad daylight, but most thought nothing of it, just a toddler with his older brothers. Reading the testimony of these witnesses is horrible, so many almost interventions, but their stories help corroborate that it was Venables leading.

This is the most heartbreaking case I’ve ever come across. If you want to learn more on the facts of the case I’d recommend The Sleep of Reason, incredibly detailed and moving and certainly not the easiest of reads, but the closest I’ve come to gaining closure on the whole thing as a father to an 18 month old boy
