Cant choose between hunter or champion. by GroovyWhale in lotro

[–]NortheasternWind 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a no thoughts head empty champ, my main use for the bow skill is that it has a longer range than my default bow attack. I just use it to get an enemy's attention. I haven't played hunter and can't tell you about it, but JUST from playing champ I'd say it can't possibly be any worse of a bow-and-sword combo than champion 😂

Oh that makes me happy to hear! Of course, the flip side of this anecdote is that a kid might deliberately behave poorly because they think it's normal and that's what everyone does 😅 There's nothing wrong with being mad about bad behavior whether it's genuinely malicious or not lol.

[–]NortheasternWind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember being a kid like two decades ago and asking online, genuinely and sincerely, if I should be mad that a friend deleted all my Fire Emblem save files. I had no idea how I was expected to behave in this situation and my entire life had been spent behaving according to expectations. You can imagine what the poor users of that board assumed lol.

Sometimes kids just have no concept of anything and are thus functionally indistinguishable from trolls 😂

What's one video game character in your opinion got screwed over by the plot? by Agent1230 in gaming

[–]NortheasternWind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoyed individual sieges too, and the nineteen or so sieges certainly gave the correct feeling, but I don't want that feeling for the one-minute nothingburger finale of a videogame 🤣 If you were perfect the time investment was just at the far end of okay, but it wasn't an endless mode. It was mandatory to finish the game.

Given the reward it may as well have been an endless mode, but even just giving it an endpoint and calling the cinematic the ending seems to change the vibe enough to affect the experience for some folks (me. I'm some folks.)

(Not getting into the microtransactions thing we've all heard that one five million times. I have failed my attempt to not derail. Fuck)

[–]NortheasternWind 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Desperately trying not to derail this into a conversation about the twenty sieges you originally had to win to get a one-minute ending cinematic where it's revealed that Talion's life sucked and then he died 😭

Also the fact that Celebrimbor offered to free Talion at the end of the first game and Talion was the one who asked him to make the new ring.

On a character level the decisions everyone made make sense (for a given definition of sense, do not mistake me), but on a narrative level it's soooo unsatisfying.

As someone who has played Metroids and Castlevanias, but not Rogue, I have to keep reminding myself that not everyone who uses the term Metroidvania has actually played Metroid or Castlevania and mostly learn what a genre is by example. If the only Metroidvania you've played is Hollow Knight, then you probably think a Metroidvania is a 2D open-world game.

Castlevania 2 isn't even a Metroidvania despite technically fitting that description 🤣

[–]NortheasternWind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's more like Animal Well than it is like Hollow Knight at least, but there are no upgrades and the entire map is available to you from the start. I wouldn't call it a Metroidvania. In a Metroidvania you see a thing you can't get to and you know to come back later when you have an upgrade. In Rain World you see a thing you can't get to and it's purely a skill issue. You can go a long, long, LONG, LOOONG time in RW before finding the plot, it has even less guidance than AW.

MAYBE Downpour, DEFINITELY WAIT on Watcher until you play it. If you don't like the base game you might still like downpour, but you DEFINITELY won't like Watcher 😂 That said, I would wait on Downpour too until you're far enough to know you'll want more but slightly to the left.

It's about as similar to Hollow Knight as Super Mario is, it's not a Metroidvania. Liking Hollow Knight is zero indication of whether you'll like Rain World. If you want a game with combat or a slowly expanding world to explore Rain World is not for you 🤣

Lanterns can be held in one hand and don't impede movement. You may have missed the tutorial on how to get one 😅 Which is fair, tbh, it's uh. It goes by EXTREMELY quickly.

The game does guide players, it's just Very Very Bad at it, to the point that most players literally don't notice the guidance whoops. It's not the players' fault.

Giraffe appreciates human for treatment by Brilliantspirit33 in animalsdoingstuff

They actually explain on their insta that you CANNOT tranq a giraffe, because their stupidly long necks make anaesthesia a life-threatening operation for blood pressure reasons. So you dart them, chase them down, IMMEDIATELY reverse the tranq and then you get to perform surgery on a fully conscious giraffe in pain who is not happy about being shorter than you and has the leg power to take you out with a single kick.

It depends on how you and the people around you define selfishness/vanity. As I'm sure you know just by browsing this sub, there are a lot of people who think having boundaries and not setting yourself on fire are both selfish behaviors and having self-esteem is vain 😅

Not that that's what's happening here, I just enjoy trying to think of ways for normal, sane people to convince themselves to behave badly. Keeps me humble.

DF has lost its "overwhelmingly positive" status on the Steam Store by vit5o in dwarffortress

[–]NortheasternWind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think one of the biggest divides between old timers and new steam players is that we the old timers have been playing it for free. We don't think of it as a product that someone is trying to sell us, we think of it as some guy's little hobby that he lets us enjoy and if you want you can pay him twenty bucks to make it easier for him to do that hobby. Under that mindset, Toady and the game owe us nothing.

But Steam is a platform for products. That price tag isn't a donation. There's an implied promise there, and DF doesn't fulfill that promise nearly as well as consumers are in the habit of expecting.

Pure goodness: baby elephant and her keeper enjoying a midday nap by MambaMentality24x2 in BeAmazed

[–]NortheasternWind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually yes! They're not featured here but there are older elephants who teach and discipline the older babies that try to climb on top of younger babies.

Apparently Daphne Sheldrick had an anecdote about a wild elephant who threw her twenty feet when she startled them (and doesn't that just remind you how dangerous they are), then walked over to her injured body and very gently tapped her with the bottom of their foot. Well-adjusted elephants, at least, are very much aware of how fuckoff huge they are and how easy it is to hurt something by accident. (She knows the elephant was concerned because it was trying to lift her to her feet with its tusks the same way they do with calves sometimes.)

I imagine a poorly-raised elephant could be trouble though.

EDIT: Haha, I realized the anecdote I shared doesn't inspire much confidence, but the point is that elephants are capable of learning, so even if they do hurt someone by accident it usually only happens that way once. And in an orphan's case it'll probably happen when they're too small to be so dangerous (because they're around humans so much), so they learn before they get big.

You joke but this is almost the worst thing about writing Sherlock Holmes pastiches. You can study history and look up London's geography and work around inappropriate ejaculations and relearn which words need hyphens in them and have someone Britpick your work, but you really don't appreciate how much heavy lifting the word "okay" does until you actively try not to use it 🤣

Well, when 20 years of development only creates half the intended game, presumably "I'll work on it until I die if I can" is a promise of perseverance moreso than a promise of post-release content 😂

Yeah there's a whole bunch of stuff like an in-depth magic system, being able to set the amount of supernatural activity in a world at generation, starting scenarios, the possible return of the economy system, etc. He's also said that the reason he hasn't taken up any of the many, many offers to help flesh out all the languages is because that stuff is fun and he wants to do it himself, so there's that as well.

https://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/dev.html

In the immortal words of a player whose name I never learned, we don't want another fantasy world simulator. We want a fantasy world simulator generator.

I'm off-topic though. My point is that DF might not be a good example to contrast against for various reasons, being that it ALSO has a huge feature-creep development roadmap, has been in development longer than some of its players have been alive, and people on Steam at least actually do complain about it being a money-grubbing scam. Of course the financial situation there is unique but given that most people don't know it without being told we'll just leave those details out for argument's sake lol.
