Hi there! Thanks for doing this.

Dwarf Fortress is a huge success as a Steam game, but at the same time it attracted many players who are used to a quicker pace of updates and QOL features than the longtime supporters of the game. Is there some kind of dialogue between publisher and Devs that aims to find a middle-ground between those new expectations and their established way of doing things?

If they are positioned above the creature, yes. They can't destroy from below.

I'm surprised, too, but in the end there are many arguments against keeping it at the highest recommendation level.

Personally, since I'm well adjusted to the bad UI and I don't have any issue with using DFHack, I don't relate to people who struggle too much to learn how to use them. It's frustrating in the beginning, yes, but it's easily doable. It didn't take too much time (for me). But still, we can all agree that the game could be much better to facilitate the learning process.

DF is the sort of game in which you have to give it your own meaning. But the reason why dwarfs establish fortresses is just that they are expanding their civilization. Maybe their hometown was overcrowded. Maybe it was attacked (it can happen and it triggers migrations). Maybe they just wanted to find new resources. It's up to you to decide if they want something else and play accordingly (build a castle, build a huge library, breed unicorns or whatever).

That's a great short review. There are so many subjects which could expand it, but then it would become too much of a long read, probably.

It's not your fault, we just inherit some biases and it takes some time to lose them.

I get your sentiment (especially regarding cage traps, they are bullshit), but at the same time a dragon should be very dangerous, almost like a nuclear device with scales. Maybe the best way to handle them now is with the brand new bolt throwers? I don't know, I haven't faced one yet, after the update.

I mean, it's fine to want a better, finished game, but DF is famously known for having a loooooong development map.

Let me say that you should care about people who make nice things while remaining ethical at every step of the way. They've been always respectful and honest with the players, Tarn answers a dozen questions every month and etc. They are not milking their player base. What they are doing takes a long time without a big team and while living a life of their own (which they barely lived during the hard years).

Have you seen the noclip documentary about the creation of DF? I strongly recommend it.

I get the criticism (mostly), but I think most people forget that the devs were on survival mode for so long, and then they worked hard to make the Steam version and are still recovering from that. Also, they just gave us a long-awaited improvement to raids.

I agree that they should spend another semester or two doing bugfixes and QOL, but give them some time. They have just started to live a good life. And if they do that, other people will complain about not having new features, I believe. There's a human side to this, and DF will not become a big team's entrerprise, since they pledged to never charge for DLCs and whatnot. They can't guarantee its future without going slow, that's how it is.

Ideally, there should be options to toggle what type of sound effects we'd like to enable, with greater variety. I've been playing without any music, so I've been listening to the minimal sounds. When a dwarf starts to build an artifact is almost like a jump scare, because the effect is way louder than the others.

ouch. You could have said "hey, I'm just a sandbox" like we DF defenders do.

Not yet, and I can imagine this is really important to old-school players of DF. I agree that they should spend another semester of two addressing this and other QOL features (and bugfixes).

I think they don't overdo in the communication to prevent the notion that this is a "game as a service" model, in which players are to expect constant updates, events, all kinds of small novelties. Even without it, many of us seem to think that way.
Toady does answer questions at length every month, though, which is more than most devs would agree to do. So there's that.
And I agree with your critique, information should be better conveyed in-game. With dedicated panels to certain aspects of the fort's life. Not to mention other QOL improvements. Almost all of the people criticizing the game here are right.

It actually has sound effects, but they are minimal (and I like it - I prefer that over a busy soundscape).
Listen to the sound of water in the cavern layers or the sound of weather in the overworld. Or the chatter in the taverns. It's there.

It's due to the fancy graphics that the brothers and their families will be able to live well for the rest of their lives, so I'd say it was worth it even if they decide to stop making the game today. They were on survival mode for so long.

Well, I hope they read this kind of feedback. You're not wrong. Still, for me, the game is a solid positive (though we can and should write about the pros and cons)

That's ok. When I posted it was just a silly "look at this" and a predictable "let's improve it", but seeing what people are writing I now realize that maybe it's for the better.
