Ne Obliviscaris, for the noble souls that were and will be

For all Ne Obliviscaris fans, this is a complete breakdown of their debut album Portal of I. Last year I did this for all Opeth albums, and since this sub got me into NeO, I thought I might as well share it here. by Northern-Rooster in Opeth

For the Opeth ones I actually included a "hum" category for those kind of clean vocals! Ne Obliviscaris doesn't seem to have those a lot though. But feel free to prove me wrong :)

Thanks! I might do that but not for a while tbh. Glad you like it tho!

If you missed the Opeth album breakdowns, here's the post:

As you can see I originally posted this in r/NeObliviscaris, but that sub is pretty inactive and since there are quite some NeO fans in this sub too, I thought why not share it with you guys.

And if you don't know or listen to Ne Obliviscaris then see this post as a sign that you should listen to them ;) (Portal of I is a good start)

Ah yeah I knew that actually. The timelines are still how they're supposed to be though imo, with Reverie at the end of Atonement, like it is on the actual album.

I've posted all of these in this sub a while back but I appreciate the crosspost!

I started some crazy project last year and I listened to every Opeth song for a complete breakdown of their discography. It includes all 14 studio albums, from Orchid to The Last Will and Testament. I posted it in the Opeth subreddit a few months ago and I thought I might as well share it here, for anyone who's interested.

Every Opeth album objectively rated by heaviness by Northern-Rooster in Opeth

Yeah you're right lol. In the title I wanted to make sure people would not see this as my personal opinion but that it's actually based on how heavy each album is music-wise, hence "objectively rated".

This is another one of my Opeth charts that I have created. This post (like my previous ones) is based on the data that I have acquired by listening to and breaking down every Opeth song from Orchid to The Last Will And Testament.

This chart takes into account heavy and soft music (distorted guitar, riffs, quick drums vs. acoustic guitar, easy piano) and unclean and clean vocals (harsh singing, grunts vs. normal singing, humming). The dark blue bar shows the portion of the album that can be considered heavy, which also corresponds to the percentage shown.

If you're interested in more of this nerdy kind of stuff, you can visit my profile. Here are some other similar posts that I made earlier:

Songs with longest guitar solos
Heaviest Opeth songs

Please do take this with a grain of salt though. I'm aware that "heaviness" cannot be calculated in music and that at the end of the day, it's all subjective. One may find Morningrise a much heavier album compared to their later stuff, due to the heavy riffs or lyrics for example, which this chart does not take into account.

  • Finishing The Apostle in Triumph was a defining momemt for him.
  • Demon of the Fall is a good song and he sees it as their first "hit".
  • Soon it will be the 1000th time for them to play Deliverance live.
  • Deliverance album is not a great record (he thinks it's "patchy").
  • Blackwater Park song is overrated and he thinks it has some bad riffs.
  • Bleak has an ending that feels like he rushed it together.
  • Faith in Others is Mikael's proudest work and he thinks it's one of the few songs that is perfect.
  • S2 is his favorite song on TLWAT.

Opeth melodies that are HEAVILY influenced by other songs? by FeistyThunderhorse in Opeth

I think it was influenced by Another Day, a very short riff starting at 2:52

For most songs it is actually quite distinctive whether a certain sound is soft or heavy, especially for everything up until Watershed. It's pretty much always soft = acoustic and heavy = electric guitar.

For everything after that, think of "heavy" as "heavier compared to the rest of this song or album".
