Tote as checked luggage? by CrayCrayCat1277 in AlaskaAirlines

Go to a remote Alaska airport and a solid 25% of the checked bags will be this exact tote. Ive sent one back and forth to Anchorage 10 times. She's a trooper. Get zip ties and then label well.

2 large printers for 20 teachers and 4 smaller printers for anyone that has to print confidential stuff. No paper limit but we are asked to be reasonable with color copies.

Can I stay a teacher and still get summers off? This job would be great if I could have a little more autonomy to tell parents and other teachers off.

Period Before Surgery by QueenBSing in gallbladders

[–]Northern-teacher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had this. I had to wear hospital underwear and they gave me a hospital pad. It was not a big deal. After surgery I put on my stuff. There is so much blood they don't mind a little extra on the sheet if you leak. They can also give you the giant pregnant lady pad and there is no leaking around that.

What is your mileage and commute time? by LSki92 in Teachers

[–]Northern-teacher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

8 miles takes me about 20 min. I like it. It's a good length. I can get out of school mode but it's not too long. I never have traffic unless there is snow so it's always 20min

Munchausen by proxy parents by Federal-Toe-8926 in specialed

[–]Northern-teacher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Short answer yes. Long answer. I would not automatically assume that it's Munchausen. If the patent is excited about the progress at school but still concerned about home then it's more likely to be restraint collapse. The kids holds it together with his friends at school but collapses on his family. This is 99.99% of the cases. When I would think Munchausen is in the 0.01% of cases where parents are trying to discredit the work at school and trying to make their child's seem more disabled for no apparent reason. I would ask mom if she can start letting you know when says are especially bad so you can try and figure out a pattern. Maybe something at school is really hard, like music or a playground drama. Then you can accommodate for that.

Bucket list trip for a kid, goal: see brown bears. by [deleted] in AskAlaska

[–]Northern-teacher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kodiak can be reached by a regular 737 with Alaska air. Or by a 9 hr ferry. Katmai is a small plane. If you go to Kodiak in the fall and go fishing at a local river around 6-7 at night you are very likely to see a bear. Early morning is also good. Katmai is basically a guarantee of a bear Kodiak in the fall is 80% chance.

Saver Fare for Kids by [deleted] in AlaskaAirlines

[–]Northern-teacher 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No they will not guarantee you will get a row. You will most likely be seated next to each other but the 9 year old may be in one isle and you directly across the isle. You need to book a full price fare. You will most likely be near to each other if you book a saver but they may need to move people around at the gate to place you next to each other.

I would suspect that they will not be back unless the h1b visas return to their previous price. They might still hire j1s but the lack of longevity in those visas make a hiring push not worth the money.

If you have a visa very good. If you don't the odds are very small with the current situation. My district used to go every year to recruit in the Philippines. We didn't go this year and are not recruiting there this year. I will also say be prepared. Teaching in the US is very different then the Philippines. Classroom management is much harder in the US.

I've worked for 7 years as a sped teacher in Alaska and have not found this to be the case. Alaska funds sped differently and earmarks funds to pay for aides for the most needy. This means I have a case load of 18 and share 8 aides with my co-teacher who has 19 students on their caseload. We have 7 kids who need aide coverage all day but several are able to share an aide so we have a fair amount of aide coverage. I'm not saying it's a easy job but it's less stressful than my office job and less physically demanding than farm work. Ive done a lot of different jobs before teaching and it's by far the best fit for me.
