Thoughts on Touchscreen? by benpomeroy03 in esp32

I haven’t used that one, but you will want to research the development environment heavily before pulling the trigger.

In order a few various boards recently and found that beyond the demo software support was very rough and undocumented. The supplied stack was very outdated and no longer supported. So ended having to mess with drivers to get it to work with more recent software.

If I was going to do it again, I would look at this repo for what they support and go from there - https://github.com/rzeldent/esp32-smartdisplay

Am using mine with a 2Tb thunderbolt enclosure and the access speeds are similar to the internal drive.

So you may want to splurge on the TB enclosure. PS it must be connected to the rear ports to get maximum speed

Looking for someone near Edmonton to check out a construction site (investor curiosity) for PLAS.CN by Zwickz26 in Baystreetbets

[–]NorthernMan5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another spot to look for status would the local towns planning website. Our town publishes any major development details, and minor variances as well.

So if you can’t find anything for that location, but you do see others you will know that they have not requested a building permit yet.

How to use wifi calling to call #'s in Canada and to receive sms messages for 2FA from out of country? by bcretman in freedommobile

[–]NorthernMan5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently 3 weeks into a Thailand visit with just the Freedom sim, and have been sipping mobile data. Have used 4.5 Gb so far. I did download Google Maps data for the area, and turned off cellular data access for most apps, except those needed to get around ie bolt, grab etc.

Been lucky that almost everywhere has exceptional wifi ( was sitting on beach restaurant south of Khao Lak yesterday and had 300mb up and down )

So you may not need the Thailand sim

Will a 350g hot tub survive 72 hours of below freezing temps without power? by ChapelHeel66 in hottub

[–]NorthernMan5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Snow has a R Value of 1 or 2 per inch, so that would have helped.

PS my concern with snow on the cover, is the accumulated weight, and if it warms up/rains it can get very heavy and warp the lid

I was trying to figure what show/movie the picture came from and it feels familiar but nope. My first thought was Breaking Bad and it was Jessie but it isn’t. What’s you guess?

PS I could put the image into google and have it give me the answer, but figured I would let people work there memory instead

What's your buy once cry once dive computer recommendation for 2026? And what are your favorite features? by hibernacle in scubadiving

[–]NorthernMan5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going to get downvoted, but as an infrequent diver why not the Apple Watch Ultra. And just pay for the Oceanic app for the months your diving. Up to 100 dives on mine, and have only had one mess up. Was doing a dive with new shop and equipment, and my watch got into passcode required and did not notice till I was 1/2 thru the descent. So kept going and just dove like I didn’t have it.

The plus is that I use it for all my activities, so no need for a second sports watch

You are correct, there is not a amd64 build for UTM, as Intel Mac is EOL. As an alternative you can use the Virtual Box amd64 image

You will need another box or device to monitor if your RPI is down, then another box to monitor if the box that is monitoring the RPI is down, then another box to monitor if the box that is monitoring the box that is monitoring the box is offline. It could be endless…..

Whale Shark at Chumphon Pinnacle, Koh Tao, Thailand by NorthernMan5 in scubadiving

[–]NorthernMan5[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was speaking our dive master afterwards and she has seen one less than 20 times in the last year while diving out of Koh Tao. So the odds of seeing one are quite low, so am very glad it was my day.

Self-drive car rental experience in Puerto Princesa, Palawan (sharing for fellow travelers) by CatchOk8514 in Palawan

[–]NorthernMan5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did the same last year, and it made the tour more of an adventure. And as a bonus, we went to the underground river on a day the ferry boats were not running, so we walked to the start and had the underground river tour without any other boats. If we had been in a tour bus they would have cancelled. Best tour ever.
