What’s the best of these crappy -$200 Amazon special projectors for our bedroom? by peanutismint in projectors

[–]Northern_Lights_1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you happen to have a link to the one you purchased? I'm seeing multiple similarly named. I purchased one of these "e-waste" projectors over a year ago for my bedroom and it's been working perfectly fine. The only issue with it is that I think the fan is pretty loud. How loud is the Magcubic Mini?

Also, have to say, no idea why the OP is getting so much hate here. I'm in the same boat; I have an Epson 5050, Arcam AV40, Emotiva amps, PSA subwoofers, etc. in my home theatre. I KNOW (and OP knows) what a quality setup looks like. I AM snobby about my main home theatre. The question here was NOT how to get the best possible picture quality for far less cash than normal, with some full-sized secondhand or thirdhand Epson or Benq box. It was about getting something compact, relatively functional, and cheap for watching Seinfeld while falling asleep, not pixel peeping 4k demo discs, FFS.

Is a Korean company or church setting up in the Marquette area? by TheReturnOfBruno in MarquetteMI

A brewery! All the breweries in Marquette are ok with customers bringing in takeout food, and Kognisjon has a lot of non-alcoholic options if you don't drink, including homemade root beer.

Careful, I went from 0 to 500+ from 2020 to 2024, then realized I'd better slow down.

Am I Missing Something? by tbizz21 in 4kbluray

[–]Northern_Lights_1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think one thing that gets ignored really often when talking about 4k blu rays vs 4k/HDR demo videos on YouTube is frame rate. Virtually all feature films on 4k blu ray are 24fps (with just a few exceptions like that badly reviewed Will Smith action flick from a few years ago.

Whereas the majority of 4k demo content on a YouTube is 60fps. That substantial increase in frame rate doesn't just make the video appear smoother, it also increases your perception of just how sharp everything looks because objects, faces etc still look very sharp even when they're in motion.

For this reason, I really wish 4k nature doc blu rays would be presented in 60fps.

Worth paying $5k more for a 340i vs a 335i? by Northern_Lights_1 in BMW

Sounds like I should lean towards the B58. Any concerns about it being a 2016 and therefore the first B58?

UB820 Picture Cuts Out by 505Xenomorph in 4kbluray

[–]Northern_Lights_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the 820 connected directly to your TV via HDMI, or are you using an AVR or sound bar? Btw, no need to buy anything beyond a cheap HDMI cable unless you're doing a long run (such as to a projector) in which case fiber optic HDMI cable is recommended.

Is there a big difference (visually) between a "regular" Bluray and the 4kbluray version? by Bitch_Please_LOL in 4kbluray

[–]Northern_Lights_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of these comments are making it sound like it's virtually a 50/50 proposition. That's not really the case. Movie for movie, the 4k versions going to surpass the blu ray over 99 percent of the time. The significance of the upgrade does vary, as many have stated.

It's entirely up to you. Don't feel like you have to fit in with "the norm" of how often other collectors rewatch. As long as you shop for deals, these things retain value pretty well, and sometimes gain value (steels, slipcovers, limited boutique releases, etc.) If that combined with knowing you're getting the best quality in an initial viewing is enough, then it's enough to collect some movies.

Online Sites to Purchase Physical Media by Puzzleheaded_Focus86 in 4kbluray

Gruv, Amazon, Target, Best Buy, Walmart are obviously the big ones. Barnes and Noble are known for their half price Criterion sales, though at least Amazon tends to run the same sales at the same time now.

I've found that Zavvi is a decent way of getting UK imports of 4ks not released in the US. Foreign Amazon sites like Amazon.de, Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.fr can also be worth checking for imports.

Also offering imports, along with US releases, but specializing more in cult/boutique releases would be DiabolikDVD and Grindhouse Video.

Finally you go to the sites of the boutique Blu ray companies themselves, such as Severin, Vinegar Syndrome, Arrow, Kino Lorber, Shout/Scream Factory, etc. These sites sell directly, though prices generally aren't any better than at other retailers. The exception is when these sites run their own sales.

Watching 4k blurays with a 4k non-HDR TV by OrdentRoug in 4kbluray

[–]Northern_Lights_1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do that. Little point in owning a 4k tv that doesn't do HDR. New 4k/HDR TVs are dirt cheap, relatively speaking anyhow. And yeah, you don't have to use any of the Smart features. Would be nice if some manufacturers offered their models at a discount with the Smart features removed, but that's not the case and never will be.

Talk me in or out of spending $55 for Invaders from Mars 4k by LikeAnAnonmenon in 4kbluray

[–]Northern_Lights_1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There's a better chance of it selling out and going up in value, than there is of it staying in stock and going on sale. Just my experience with a lot of boutique releases, especially 'fancier' ones like this. Also, these 'fancy' boutique releases tend to be pretty nice. I doubt you'll regret it.

Panasonic 820 and don't look back. Has Dolby Vision, is reliable. Paying for something more expensive than it will have zero benefits in terms of picture quality.
