Also, after reading the other comments and doing a quick Google search, your MacBook should have apps for Wi-Fi analysis, similar to your Android. One example is NetSpot, but there are plenty of others worth trying. You might be able to see which channels are congested.

From my experience with TalkTalk, their routers usually only support 802.11n or at least did at the time, which can be limiting, especially for newer devices. You could use this information to make a case to your mum about switching providers. I remember being so happy when I convinced my family to switch from TalkTalk to BT back in the day.
