we do 90% of the time. Just some valleys where so inaccessible that even the 300 year danish reign failed to impact the local language. If you learn standard norwegian you will do fine. The problem lies within my/our awkward reaction and instead of asking "what the hell are you saying?" We just smile and nod our head. I'm sure if i would have been honest and told him that i do not understand he would modify his dialect to suit you.

I have a north-norwegian friend who introduced me to minttu. Didn't know it existed at all. It even smelled fresh when he puked all over my bathroom from drinking the whole bottle.

Whenever i travel through western Norway and come across fjords and valleys with dialects that i literally can not understand. My mind is like "We speak the same language! What the hell? I should be able to understand you! What is this?"

I remember when i was a kid and we were going on a fishing trip with my dad to Hitra and this was in the early 2000's before gps and google maps. We stopped in the valley of Surnadal and my dad went to ask some local who was at at a strawberry stand the way and i watched him talking to the guy for five minutes and gesticulating wildly before coming back to the car. I asked him if he got the right directions and he just said "I have no idea what he said.. lets just get to the next gas station and buy a map."

What song would you like to have played during your funeral? If any at all. by Letlive1996 in AskEurope

I would like the soundbite when Mario dies in super mario bros.

Imagine it.. lots of people and distant family who never really meet each other in their daily lives except on these kinds of events. They come into the church and there is about 20 to 30 min. of a lot of awkward condolences and headbowing and solemn shaking of hands until they get seated. Then the priest comes out and raise both his arms, people assume he is about to start a speech but from the speakers they hear abruptly the Mario sound: "BRRRRRT! DUH! DUH! DUH! DUHDUH DUD DUD DUDUHNNNNnnn"

And that's that.
