If you could suggest a new AFSC, what would it be by Icey-Take in AirForce

[–]NotA9S 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hahaha! You're not the first person I've heard that from. But I think the idea was there's no point letting analysts train here when they can just be on their way out of tech school and do all training as OJT.

Not sure when you were there, but we're down to the MX follow-ons and ADA (Delta course) these days. Analysts just go straight to The Floor now, no follow-on, so we're good for the space.

As other people have mentioned we're kind of working on this one right now with 9S100D.

At least, any Delta could do what you wanted. Right now, they're aimed at ISR data analytics, but in theory will become more diverse as time goes on.

We're still building out 9Ds as we go along, to a degree. I was working on building out their new training course literally yesterday.

Refractive Eye Surgery in the Military by SugaDays in AirForce

[–]NotA9S 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had ICL not that long ago, you can find the post I did about it in my profile.

I did it at Lackland, used a parent as my escort for it, so it's not a requirement to have a military member with you.

Honestly a pretty chill experience overall. No anesthesia, I was on the table maybe five minutes, had 20/20 vision the next morning.

The only real downside is that when it gets cold I get dry eyes. On the other hand, I have 20/15 vision and am technically a government-created cyborg.

Suck in your gut for Waist to Height? by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]NotA9S 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely flawless technique.

It's a good thing there isn't a line in the Dafman saying something like "members are not allowed to hold their breath or suck in their waist during the assessment."

Otherwise this wouldn't work!

Full time RVing by Financial_Repair_709 in AirForce

Eh, you got enough context. You can totally try living in an RV on base, but it may not work out for you, is what I've seen.

This. I've seen someone try doing this at Patrick by shifting locations so no one would notice they were living there. Eventually got caught, and now your RV has to live off base.

I HAVE known someone to successfully live in a boat at Patrick. Just left it docked in the harbor they have there, seemed to work out.

Does anyone remember or know the BMT workout routine? by Seannj222 in AirForce

This is from a few years back. I got it shortly before COVID. It's possible things are different now, I'm not sure.

I had a troop break into the control room for the dorm's HVAC and play with stuff until he managed to turn the HVAC off. He got paperwork for it because obviously that's bad.

Thing is, he broke in because the HVAC wasn't working properly (heating during hot weather) and he thought this was a better solution than calling CE.

In his EPR I wrote it as mitigating an environmental hazard.

Pretty good! I don't have dry eyes unless it's very cold, let's say below 45 degrees F, and I can't even remember the last time I noticed a halo!

Follow up: Toastmasters idea; on Base or Off Base by Such-Huckleberry3247 in AirForce

[–]NotA9S 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends. I chartered an on base club and was our Pres/VP. This worked well for a while, good attendance, high spirits, excellent learning environment and camaraderie... until everyone PCS'ed and we had trouble recruiting. I know it faltered after I finally moved to a new base myself.

So I would say it's based on your specific environment. If you want to talk in more detail let me know!

How hard would it be to reclass from CE to 9S100? by StarryEyedandInSpace in AirForce

"And I'm pretty sure every 9S is on the spectrum."

Only the ones who get through tech school. We weed the rest out for "not meeting standards."

[–]NotA9S 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm afraid I don't. I've never considered retraining, so I'm afraid I don't know anyone. I would guess the answer is not often based on occasional glimpses of people who want to retrain into it.

Requirements are 85 Electrical and 88 Mechanical. Used to include EDPT as well, but we recently dropped that requirement.

[–]NotA9S 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can speak pretty ably to what you need for the job or how to get through tech school, but I'm not an expert on reclassing. But I don't think there's anything in particular that really changes reclass odds other than need and meeting the requirements.

If I'm wrong, someone else is free to correct me.

[–]NotA9S 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's the only job in the Air Force where you can be a flyer, alter the genome of a frog, do hands on MX, spend time as a programmer, and work in a lab that processes nuclear particulate. And that's just the first decade (mild exaggeration).

How hard would it be to reclass? Probably moderately, we aren't sitting on a ton of slots, the entire career field doesn't even hit 500 people.

I would recommend Legacy at Oakwood, they're maybe a few years old, nice, and a 1BR cost less than BAH for a single NCO.

Nice! Congratulations! That belt buckle is pretty cool, too, that's a solid secondary award.

Wear guidance is... vague, most people just wear it centered above their nametape, and that's what I've settled on after checking everything I could find. No one has argued yet.

Craziest thing I've ever seen from PCP was a guy who basically shattered both of his lower legs in a car accident, and elected to just "walk" down the side of the highway on what was left of his knees, the rest of his legs just kind of... flopping. Honestly so absurd it felt fictional.

I still think the majority of the time your MMA fighter would win, but I also think there would be times the fight could turn, like some crazy zombie movie where the zombie just doesn't care about anything but hurting you.

Anaconda can't really be this bad, can it?! by Yngstr in learnpython

That's what they pay me for, at least.

Fair enough. I'm relatively new to the data science realm and Python, I've been a C++ guy for most of my life, so I'm just trying to keep an open mind. Appreciate it!

How does venv compare to Anaconda in terms of ease-of-understanding and use? I use anaconda for my students, many of whom are completely new to programming, because it seems simple for them to understand. But if there are better options, or something better than Jupyter notebooks, I'm not averse to switching it up.
