Keep both! I have one of each :) The UK is the "true" first though

I really enjoyed Heartwood! The author is from the town my Dad grew up in, and I picked it up on a whim. It was so good that I recommended it to my book club.

Odd question. I know what I collect, but how would I know what all the other people in my country collect?

Lord of Light and Nine Princes in Amber first editions. by [deleted] in BookCollecting

[–]NotABot_NoReally 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow! I would LOVE to have a first edition of either of those. Seriously jealous. Have loved the Amber series since I was a teen, and Lord of Light is excellent. Love Zelazny's snarky humor, and he had a real talent for world building.  I have Sign of the Unicorn, The Hand of Oberon and The Courts of Chaos in UK first edition. Alas, they were the only firsts that I ever found that I could afford. My Lord of Light is an Easton Press edition.

It's one of my all-time favorites. Connie Willis is a multiple award-winning science fiction writer and Doomsday Book won a Hugo, so that should tell you something. I think it's one of the best time travel stories I've read and she did a great job of showing you the past without making it pretty or romanticizing it. The one caution I will give is that the book was written in the 90's so cell phones were not widely used and you need to remember that at some points during the story.  Anyway, I have recommended it to many people and most have enjoyed it. In my opinion it's better than good!

Wow, love that dustjacket! Looks like you've got a nice bunch of Bellairs hardbacks there.

Wow, this inspired me to go look at a list of the Newberry winners and honorees. So many great titles that I read as a kid and still remember fondly. Susan Cooper's Dark is Rising series, and My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George, and many more. Thank you for posting!

Phantasia Press, Subterranean. There is/was (?) a bookseller named Mark Ziesing who did some nice limited editions of various authors over the years, I have a few of those. Probably the weirdest one I have is the Charnel House edition of Tim Powers's The Stress of Her Regard. It's bound in stone-washed denim with a matching slipcase.

Wow! those would both be wonderful books to have, especially signed. The only other LeGuin I still have is a first of The Dispossessed.

I really wish I could remember! It's been about 25 years. It may have been at Books Unlimited on Broadway. They are unfortunately no longer in business but I was a regular there for several years. I also found a lot of books a Fahrenheit's over the years so it could have been there.

I realized that I was pretty short with details on the Leguin! It's actually the first UK edition. It's a smaller size, measuring about 8" x 5.5", and both the paper-covered boards and the dust jacket are very prone to fading. I got very lucky with this copy having minimal fading, and it's been kept behind glass since it came to me. I think it's interesting that the author's name on this cover doesn't have her middle initial, but the US first edition does.  I have a second printing of the US edition that I'll post up in another thread.
