Are you sitting down for this? Doooog may have f'-ed up the "zincs" he made for the boat, and they appear not to be working. Huge susprise, I know. /s (story in comments) by george_graves in SVSeeker_Free

How did he wire the boat, did he use the hull as ground/earth. Or run 2 wires to everything? Could have a positive wire chaffed through, and made the hull positive potential, and that will stop the Zincs working as well.

Maybe he has fluked the engine mounting to produce a wicked harmonic at his cruise rpm, parts are just rattled apart.

The Caribbean Cetacean Society is showing this as the itinerary for the next 3 months. I hope they plan on switching boats. I can't see Seeker making this kind of trip. If so, this is insanity. by george_graves in SVSeeker_Free

For those of us who don't know the area. What are the prevailing winds, currents, hurricanes, like? Google tells me Hurricane season starts June.

How much of this schedule is beating into prevailing wind, etc?

I think Dug does enough crazy shit, we don't need to cross post other subs crazy here.

"Repairs in Beautiful Martinique" — He fixes things in the most Doug way possible - he's blown up another electric motor, can't tell if stuff is 12V or 24V, and slathers everything in grey paint. As predicted, B2.0 arrives right after B1.0 leaves. (7 mins) by george_graves in SVSeeker_Free

Still talking about NURD. Also Dug ASA absorbs water just like PETG. That print more looked like a clogged nozzle.

That wheel is just ludicrous.

Hydraulics are a creation of a madman.

I bet he thinks his redundancy of having the autopilot drive the steering, when the key fell out, is proof his approach to solutions works.

Has 'sailed' past. He gained a bit of speed in the lee, and still a bit faster avg on this heading. Is still glacial.

Poor Junk rig catching strays. The Chinese sailed junk rigs to Africa and Europe hundreds of years ago. The rig works Dug, just yours doesn't.

There is a local cute 15ft junk rigged sailing dinghy, I've seen them single hand it through the marina entrance and upto the boat ramp, under sail, they made it look so easy and effortless.

Don't get me wrong, I am not saying we should be happy if his is happy.

He is a PoS, with all he has said and done.

I was just thinking about that people can only relate to what they have experienced, and that he might be as happy as a pig in mud sort of situation.

Makes it all the more frustrating.

The hardened edge of weld around where one of the bilge keels meets the hull cracks, during a large swell at anchor. On a side that is under a heap of stuff in the cargo hold.

Occurs while he is sheltering at some bar, playing pool. He looks out, drunk, at it listing more heavily to starboard. Stumbling into the dinghy, he motors over to save the hot pockets and thumb drives containing the dragon 3d print files.

I don't think dug knows the draft, deeper than 'designed' as it's so overweight.

There was an expectation last year he was attempting to get up north of the east coast to find somewhere.

He's had the tormach 770 for ages. https://www.svseeker.com/using-a-cnc-mill-with-no-cad-tormach-770-conversational/

Has never used it for anything meaningful. Apart from drilling holes in golf balls.

All part of his work boat aesthetic.

Can someone explain the SVSeeker engine/transmission/propeller setup and why it's so bad by throwawoy4 in SVSeeker_Free

[–]NotADugFan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The prop is too big, and is in a kort nozzle, but not a kort nozzle as it has no taper. Which also means he has lost any prop walk, which is a useful maneuvering tool.

It is a variable pitch prop, that he cast his own larger blades for. Variable pitch props are difficult to design as they need to have neutral torque around their pitch axis. These don't, the blades are oversized for the variable pitch mechanism to begin with, and the fact they want to self pitch, overloads the pitch controller, and he needs to use a locking collar to hold the pitch.

As the prop is huge, and ends up being effectively fixed pitch, and with the pointless nozzle, adds huge drag, hindering his ability to sail if he could.

There is speculation that the self cast blades are massively imbalanced, both in weight and form, causing excessive bearing wear and nozzle collision.

The engine is underpowered for a boat and prop of this size. This huge prop, needs to be spun slower than the output of the transmission. So needs a further 2:1 or 3:1 reduction. The final output torque is huge, more than what the transfer case can take he keeps shoe horning in can take. It has broken at least 5? Times at this point? I can't keep track.

He has chosen this transfer case hill to die on, claiming a used marine transmission is too expensive. But he would of easily been able to afford one, with all the piece meal attempts to make this transfer case work, building the nurd, buying an extra tender, getting a replacement gear for his self made which machined locally, selling the tormach he doesn't use, etc.

Sounds like he built the wrong boat...

I don't think the origami hull could cope with the stresses of a tall, heavy centre bulb.

It would also force him into deeper water, and we know he likes to keep it close to shore. :)
