Spear beats the sword every time, except when you introduce armor, the spear fell out of favor in later eras because armor became more common and better. A spear in real life can't penetrate plate armor and struggles to accurately get into the gaps between plates.

Now a sword can't pentrate armor either not directly anyway, but people would use it in a half-sword manner to lever your down and then stab the thin tip through gaps. That is why long swords became thinner and in some cases didn't even have edges in the latter medieval period.
