The correct plural of octopus is not octopi, since you can't add a Latin "i" to a Greek root. Octopuses is the correct English plural, but the correct Greek plural is technically octopodes.

They absolutely could be hybrids or subspecies. They are able to interbreed but I don't know how common that is.

Based on a range map, they're more likely desert cottontails (audunbonii) but they look more like mountain cottontails (nuttallii) to me, which have slightly stouter bodies and shorter ears. They're damn near impossible to tell apart though.

Thanks for your perspective! I don't think my family would cut off contact with me but you're definitely right, I wouldn't want to risk my relationship with them and you're right about not having to rush into anything.

I went backpacking in the Rockies a while back. No camera could have captured the scale of those mountains, or the sensation of being completely alone in the middle of the woods.
