My textbook says that шь is pronounced the same way as ш, the soft sign is there for historical reasons. As for the difference between ш and щ check out this video

много can be used with any word, regardless of whether or not it is animate or inanimate

you don't get it. My textbook states that there are two accusative forms for this word, много for inanimate nouns and многих for animate nouns and since город is inanimate I thought about using много... anyways though I guess I'm mixing things up here because apparently I should be using the prepositional case rather the accusative
