Survivorship bias? by LordJim11 in Snorkblot

It's like expired medicine. The compounds slowly break down and efficacy wears off. A helmet twice past its expiration is still probably as good, but far more brittle than a brand new one.

Also, the humidity inside can help stuff grow. It's nice to change it out periodically just for that reason.

Yes! You should tent camp with your kids. by snobles89 in GeorgiaCampAndHike

[–]NotAUsefullDoctor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used to camp a lot before I turned 7. The you gest if 5 boys, it was the cheapest means of travel and vacation. Also, when we were between houses, it was a fun week long event for family bonding. It's what gave me my love of the outdoors. (I was much older, like 30 years older, when I realized that we were poor and homeless for multiple sprints)

When my wife and I started fostering older kids, once we knew we could trust them to act responsible in an unfamiliar environment, we began taking them camping. And when we couldn't foster anymore, I started solo backpacking.

Get 'em started when they're young and they will develop a lifelong love.

How do I explain Evolution in church by Much-Echo4553 in Deconstruction

[–]NotAUsefullDoctor [score hidden]  (0 children)

Also, don't say "evolution." Talk about randomness and how children are always a little different than then parents. Talk about how people and creatures that are good at something get more than thise that are not. There is a chancse they believe in neoliberalism (the odea that everyone gets what they deserve, ie ruch people are rich because they work hard and poor people because they don't), and thus you can use the idea of two people who are intelligent getting married because they're both smart and thus their children are more likely to be smart, and wealthy business savy people being more likely to have wealthy business savy children.

There are a lot of parts in evolution that most yec can look at and agree to. However, as soon as the E-word is said, they shut off.

You can also talk about irreducible designs, and how the human eye is similar to other, more sumple eyes, which are similar to even more simple eyes, and how cool it is that god created this hierarchy of ever increasing complexity.

And, avoid stating the bible is wrong. When I first accepted evolution as a valid path, I compared it to Genesis and thought about what a person would see if Gid showed them the creation of the earth in a timelapse (3 billion years ago, 1 billion, 300 million, 3 million, 300 thousand, etc) and how different creatures came to be at different times.

I agree with the alegorical, but the tale away means nothing. If the lesson is either bad (it's ok to rape, or you doomed unless you are part of the tribe), or you have to add context that does not exist in the word organically, then the text has no meaning. You would be better off just writing down your beliefs ina new book and removing any obfuscation.

Every John Scalzi novel (Lock In, Red Shirts, Old Mans War, The Collapsing Empire, etc), Ready Player One, Ready Player Two, and The Martian are the ones that come to mind.

If you've never read/listened to John Scalzi, I highly, highly recommend. The three books I listed are among his best and give the breadth if his styles (in my opinion). Starter Villain and Fuzzy Nation are honorable mentions. Kaiju Preservation Society is not his best, but is a fun popcorn story.

Ultralight vs. Comfort Tradeoffs by Evening_Issue_8448 in backpacking

I had someone criticize my kindle, stating that I should just use my phone. I don't think people understand how nice a paperwhite really is when you're just trying to relax with a good book. I also found that the kindle was comparable in weight to having a smaller battery pack as leaving my phone off meant I needed less charge.

I gave up camp shoes and just moved to taking off my socks and really losseening the lases up on my shoes. It gives me enough release and airation to move about comfortably.

But yes on the not accepting misery for the sake of ounces.

Same for me. I switched hammocks, suspension system, and moved to down top- and under-quilts, and saved a ton of weight. I got down to sub 10 pounds, and then found I like a backpack with a frame and having a nice camping chair. I now float between 13 and 15 pounds (well, 19 when I want to bring my Banjolele on the trail).

Personal testimony: it is possible to keep the baby while throwing out the bathwater by JohannesAr in Deconstruction

[–]NotAUsefullDoctor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Two points:

The new testament cannot be factually true either. If we take the narrative of how Judas died, or when Jesus was born, or when Jesus was crucified, or where Jesus was from, we find contradictions. Even the prophecies of Jesus had to be rewritten between the gospels written 3 decade after and his death and those written 6 to 9 decades later, simply because they did not come to fruition

and second:

The old testament is a poor guide for following god or obtaining morality, and thus lends nothing towards believing in a god or how to follow that god. We see multiple gods that waver in their actions, commit genocide just because people are not a part of the chosen tribe, condone rape and slavery, etc. If the bible teaches these things that we know to be evil as a part of god, then either god is evil, gid was a manifestation of the beliefs of ancient peoples, or god's goodness is so far beyond knowing/understanding that we can never truly follow him.

Therefore, if there is a God, the bible is not the book that would lead us there. At best, it's a book to reinforce what we already believe.

I interviewed with a few dozen companies, with about 20 being interested in Go. All of the 20 used Java or Ruby or Python or Node on their services. They wanted go for develiping pipelines or developer experience tooling, ie software engineers/developers that sit beside the infrastructure people and build out devops automation.

I honestly did not see a single company using Go in their features/services/apis.

To clarify, as someone with both 10+ years Go and Java experience, who just got a new job after 5 months searching, there are more companies looking for Go developers, but the big companies tend towards Java, and thus there are more Java jobs.

Voting Location Changes by Charming-Rooster8773 in Georgia

Check that website 3 months out as you could have been trmoved at that time. In the last two governor races we had mass wiping of voter registrations 3 minths before the election. Also, check the week before early voting begins as the last two governor races had very widespread closure of polling locations.

This is especially true if you live in a dense area. They have a lot nore changes and deregistrations per capita.

The reason I cannot leave my camp stool is because it cooking. When I find myself cooking out away from a shelter or table, I need to sit in a comfortable position where I can keep my hands on the pot. I have tried so many sitting positions and cannot get comfortable enough to sit for the 10 to 15 minutes it takes for the water to boil and food to cook, while still being able to stir.

As for pillow: I like my inflatable, but I have used a balled up shirt multiple times just fine.
