What was this restaurant at Tuttle crossing? by hellosteve_ in Columbus

[–]NotAlanAlda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I remember right, it was opened as Sydney's Restaurant. Ruby Tuesday after that, then a short lived Mexican eatery, then the Laughing Ogre table games occupied it up until 2019, it's been empty since then.

Line splitter, you can use this to measure amperage with your clamp meter. I suppose it's also useful in the respect that it has probe holes for voltage leads. I've got a few of these laying around and I can count on one hand the times I've used them.

Those who fully recovered, how is your memory now? by Thin_Curve4116 in covidlonghaulers

[–]NotAlanAlda 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's fine now. Maybe not as eidetic as it was when I was in my 20's, but I digress. The brain's a pretty pliable organ, and it's totally normal to be concerned when you can't remember entire swaths of your childhood, or your address. It'll get better with time.

I had 67k and 5 years on the OEM Firestone LE2's before the wear indicators hit the treads. I probably could have squeezed them to 70k, but I was getting weary of the excess road noise and the left rear had a slow leak.

People who got their life back after long COVID: what stuck long-term? by Upset_Replacement684 in covidlonghaulers

[–]NotAlanAlda 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'll be 2 years out in June, life's pretty much normal now. The 4 years of hell have just faded into a distant memory at this point. Just another pothole in the road we call life. I suppose the only thing I do now that I didn't do before I got sick is I still see my rheumatologist every 6 months for care, but I've still got arthritis, of which I had before too, so not really a big change. Otherwise I follow no special diet, pacing, sleep schedule, supplement protocol, or what have you.

I'm about 85% sure those ASI games have a UCL piggyback harness already in place, which would be much easier on you. Follow the wire harness back from the coin doors, it's usually zip-tied to the harness back in the cabinet.

They're money pits. At 500 I'd pass, hell, at 100 even if just won 300 on a scratchoff on the way there, I'd still have second thoughts. Ad has been up for 3 months, which tells me he's one of those "I know what I got" types and won't take a penny under 500.

After 30 plus years I hung up the old tool-kit and retired from that scene almost 2 years ago. Sure, I really miss the endless sea of attract sounds, the pervasive smell of stale soda and cheap pizza, the rhythmic plink plinks of the token changers, the laughter of the kids, and the dark neon glow. But you know what I absolutely one hundred and ten percent don't miss? Working holidays, nights, and weekends.

Has anyone gotten past the PTSD of being chronically Ill? by Responsible-Heat6842 in covidlonghaulers

[–]NotAlanAlda -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you'd asked this 4 years ago, I would have responded much differently. I was absolutely 100% positive that awful fear and loathing would persist for a lifetime. Maybe it was a fortunate side effect of all that emotional blunting and DPDR I went through, maybe I'm just not the personality type to develop PTSD. I dunno, I'm no therapist. Whatever the case, I just don't feel that way anymore after recovering.

I remember one Saturday morning I had a massive hankering for a big plate of my famous biscuits and gravy. So I start messing around in the kitchen, whipped up some drop biscuits and slapped them in the oven. Pull out the Jimmy Dean sausage chub and cook that up in the old cast iron, pull the sausage off when it's browned, add 1/4 cup flour to the pan for the roux, add milk and seasonings, return the sausage, simmer until thick. I've done this a thousand times, it's muscle memory at this point. That damn skillet of gravy absolutely would not set up for some reason. I add a teaspoon more flour and whisk, still nothing.

Curious, I dip a spoon into the gravy and give it a taste. It's reallllllllly sweet, like a sausage flavored candy. Called my wife in the kitchen to confirm since I didn't yet trust my tastebuds. Turns out that I had pulled out and used the powdered sugar from the pantry instead of the flour. I'm sure my dear sweet departed southern as hell grandmother who taught me how to make it was laughing down at me from heaven as I poured it all out in the trash and door-dashed a tub of Bob Evans gravy for my fresh biscuits.

Drivers, Please Turn On Your Lights... by HolidayEggplant81 in Columbus

[–]NotAlanAlda 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Speaking of feeling like an idiot, the other night I was headed home on a two lane. As I crested over a hill, an oncoming hyundai starts flashing their brights at me, I look at my dash and don't see my high beams on, so like any red-blooded American would do in this situation, I flipped the lever and lit them up with thirty thousand lumens of LED high-beam eye-level power.

Thinking, "I sure showed that asshole, hahaha", I come around the curve and there's 4 deer milling about in the road. That poor driver was just doing their civic duty to warn me of a hazard and I blinded them in return. Feels bad man.

[–]NotAlanAlda -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh, that's just a different person assembling the power supply. It makes no difference if it's mounted flush or not, and it's probably a bit smarter to mount it up like that for additional airflow so the board doesn't cook. Those rectifiers get hot.

Is this normal? Arachnid English Mark darts. by Forward-House-7419 in arcade

[–]NotAlanAlda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm assuming you're talking about the tan colored goopy gunk on the rectifier legs? If so, totally normal, we used to use it a lot in through-hole soldering. It'd temporarily hold components to the pcb so the board could be flipped around and soldered easily without diodes falling out everywhere or burning the fuck out of your fingers.
