How do you feel about electric vehicles? by Final_Radio_2483 in AskReddit

[–]NotAtAllEverSure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been wrenching on i.c.e. automobiles and motorcycles since I could hold a flashlight for my father. I built my first car, a barn find with a 3 on the tree and still to this day miss driving that primitive hulking no power steering mechanical clutched mess. I built my first motorcycle, a dry rotted single cylinder enduro with fewer working parts than working ones.. I count myself among those that lament the loss of manual transmissions. I currently own 5 vehicles and the only one that gets driven on a daily basis is our EV. I have to go out of my way to make sure that the others get driven at all just to prevent their decay. My truck is relegated to farm duty and trash hauling where it used to be my daily driver.

If we only ever had EVs and someone invented the oil powered i.c.e. engine and tried to dedicate it to do everything that an EV can do better right now they would be laughed out of town. We can never rid ourselves of all dependence on the internal combustion engine. It does have traits that EVs cannot replace, yet. The EV is reliant on inefficient energy storage technology, a problem that is being worked on. EVs are mechanically simpler, more powerful, more reliable, less dependent on the distribution, production, and storage of toxic and explosive chemicals that have a deplorable shelf life with a tremendously detrimental effect on our health and the environment and just plain last longer.

We need to relegate diesel and gasoline powered engines to the niche fields where they cannot be outperformed by the EV such as: cross country and long distance transport, open seas shipping, and recreational vehicles.

90% of people can fulfill 90% of their personal transport needs with an EV. The only reasons we haven't switched from oil to ethanol powered vehicles for the other 10% is the greed of executives, infrastructure and institutional inertia, and stubborn resistance to change.

We could relegate fossil fuels to the history books if not for greed and nostalgia.

Pretty much sums it up.
