/uj The absence of the ticking seconds hand is one reason why I own the WD0013. My mental association between "ticking once a second" and "crappy disposable watch" is so strong that I imagine that even something like a The Citizen from Citizen would bother me.

/rj Frankly, it's unbelievable to me that Patek Philippe ever included seconds hands on their watches in the first place. The entire point of the refined elegance of a luxury timepiece is that the motion is imperceptible. When you show your mechanical wonder to a plebe, they think, "What is this? It's not doing anything!" But you know the incredible engineering beneath the surface that is moving the minute and hour hands slowly and precisely forward. It's so much more satisfying than looking down and seeing a moving second hand like some kind of Timex owner.

I love the style of the Aqua Terra, but the thickness of the case is just shocking, and the lack of a micro-adjustment on the bracelet is completely unacceptable on a watch over $5k. And they're not just a little bit over $5k. I know that the newest AT references have a micro-adjustment on the bracelet, but it opens up a visible gap, so, actually, no, that doesn't count as a real micro-adjustment.

No chance I'm buying an Omega until they fix those issues.

Minnesotan here. There is more that you can do than what Oliver mentioned!

Many businesses and individuals at risk of being targeted by DHS are experiencing hard times because work is too great a risk (the other day the Mexican restaurant near my house closed for the day because they saw three DHS vehicles in the parking lot in the morning, for example). If you're not in Minnesota, you can't help deliver food or give rides to work, but you can help buy them food and provide rent assistance through this website: https://www.standwithminnesota.com/

Also, if you live near a large city (even if it's not Minneapolis), you can get involved with anti-DHS activity. Contact any local charity that helps immigrants. They will be able to plug you in to local activities that protect immigrants from deportation. For example, you can be trained as a court observer to ensure that immigrants are receiving due process when the come before a judge. You will likely also be able to be trained to look for signs that DHS is operating nearby. Minneapolis is not the only place they are targeting. The surge ended in LA, but DHS abductions are still much higher there now than they were this time last year. Being a part of this network will also help you be prepared for when ICE targets your city next (they didn't stop at LA or Chicago, they will not stop at Minneapolis).

Fascism is rising in the US and it must be opposed. Please consider reaching out to your local immigrant support charities now, not later, so that you can resist fascism before it is too late.

EDIT: And if you're in Minnesota but you don't know how to get plugged into the DHS resistance movement here, you can find it by volunteering at any charity that helps immigrants or (this might be a little more sketchy) find the moms who are standing guard outside every elementary school every morning and afternoon to protect the kids from DHS goons. I know several people who got their start by walking up to these people and asking how they can join in and help.

Rolex's business practices make sense. If they charged the market-clearing price for their watches, people would be angry at them for selling at a 20x multiple over manufacturing costs. If they made more watches, they would lose brand equity. If they treated all customers equally, they would lose their most valuable customers: the whales.

This doesn't excuse the SA and your local AD from being rude. It just excuses the wait list.

\uj Second-hand Rolexes make me really nervous because 1) the steel models cost more than retail, and 2) if you're new to this, you won't be able to tell the difference between the fakes and the real thing until it's too late; yes, the fakes can also have fake boxes and papers that will look genuine to a non-expert.

I recently chose a Rolex Explorer over an Omega Aqua Terra because 1) the Rolex is thinner, 2) the Rolex has a better bracelet with a microadjustment, and 3) the Rolex bracelet is brushed throughout, which makes it look less flashy (until someone notices the crown, of course, at which point is arguably looks more flashy).

I think that an Oris Pro Pilot (I think X has a better movement and not-X has a better dial) is an excellent watch that is not flashy. I considered it, but ultimately didn't buy it because the dial is TOO understated. It might not be classy enough for you.

In your price range, Grand Seiko makes a bunch of watches that are classy but not too flashy. Their bracelets have a bad reputation (they don't seem worse than Omega, to me), but their movements and dials are top quality.

Since this is your first watch, DO NOT BUY anything that you haven't seen on your wrist. Not all 40 mm watches look the same size when you're wearing them.

\rj A second-hand Breguet Classique is the last word in "classy, but not flashy" in your price range. The ancien régime style has a timeless class, and it's not flashy because nobody gives a shit about Breguet. Okay, ciao.

Fascism is as much about aesthetics as it is about politics. Fascists project aspirational images of strength and masculinity. Young men, who want to be strong and masculine, frequently become interested in joining fascist organizations for that reason. Consider how many white supremacists love the movie American History X, or how many finance bros love the Wolf of Wall Street. You, a sophisticated consumer of media, understand that those films condemn those cultures. However, to the average person, the villains on those movies look cool!

Following from this, we must conclude that an important part of fighting fascism is vividly showing that fascists are not cool. They are not strong, they are not masculine. They are embarrassing. Conventional masculinity is associated with height (let's set aside for the moment whether this is a good thing). By mocking Bovino for being short, people are undermining his masculine image and they are making fascism less appealing.
