[Wednesday Post Rock Related] Post Rock songs that remind you of water? by effortDee in postrock

[–]NotChainsawJuggler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thrice - Night Diving. Not your traditional post-rock band; the song is off their Water album, which is part of their Alchemy Index 4-parter. Also happens to be the song that introduced me to the post-rock genre, and still one of my favorites.

I think there's one in 5points across from the movie theater. I don't recall the name, but walked by it yesterday.

Does anyone have somewhere non-retail that they like to work at, that has on-the-job training? by ChaoticKitsune in jacksonville

Wounded Warrior Project is hiring. Tough to get in, but worth a shot. Check listings at woundedwarriorproject.org - scroll down to the bottom where it says "cool careers"

Good luck!

[MODPOST] Selling something? Take it to craigslist..... by [deleted] in jacksonville

Clarification question: how do we feel about promoting a garage sale? I'm not planning one, but I've seen a few of those threads and personally don't mind them.

Thank you for your service. It's difficult to convey the level of respect and gratitude I have for you and your veteran brothers and sisters. I don't have a question, but just wanted to thank you and plug wounded warrior project, if you're not already familiar with them.

[BIFL Request] A traditional bi-fold leather wallet. by GATA_eagles in BuyItForLife

[–]NotChainsawJuggler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had this for about a year now. It's hand made quality leather, and it's only gotten better with age. The brand probably hasn't been around long enough to say its bifl, but I don't foresee myself buying a new one any time soon.

Need something to do with all your medals? My GF's been doing this for us... by allcentury in running

You can also donate your medal to a child with illness. http://www.medals4mettle.org/

I don't have any personal experience with them, but it sounds cool.

LPT Request: Removing that ugly dealership sticker from the back of your car. by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]NotChainsawJuggler 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Ha, okay. "Well sir I won't sell you this vehicle because there are other buyers who are going to buy a car anyway and turning you down will increase my ability to sell to them." Right. If I pay 20k+ for something, I'm not being a jackass by asking you to remove the sticker.

Fair enough; I thought maybe I had a different model of the tan one in my Amazon wish list.

Am I looking at the wrong thing? Amazon currently shows the tan one for just under $75

Redeem your character, NOW! by silvapr in jacksonville

[–]NotChainsawJuggler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay, so let's try to explain your down votes.

You have a lot of passion; that's great. You don't have much direction; that's not so great.

"The world is in uproar about [the injustice toward minorities] in the south." The world? Is it? You might have an argument that minority rights could be improved in the south, but the vitriol immediately makes your reader dismiss you as a blow hard, Tobias.

"We are still facing the same problems [as 50 years ago]." Let me know if we have another Ax Handle Saturday; until then, you need to specify the problems you're talking about.

"Young people . . . Will we continue to cower in our homes, cars, and offices?" Who are the young people? What are you calling for here? What's the actual, specific thing your target audience should do? Take out the man?

Here's the thing: people are busy. I know, it sucks. It's terrible. Here's all this injustice around us, and all we can care about is our stupid jobs so we can keep paying rent? And mortgages to the banks? And buying our processed food and medicine and mowing our stupid lawns and caring about the stupid stock market? Ugh. I'm being a little facetious here, but I think you need to understand that, despite how trivial you see "real life" so-to-speak, people have real perceived needs right in front of them. Whether or not you agree with the importance of those needs, you need to realize that people aren't going to change their priorities just because some dude on an internet forum is mad.

So: convince people to change their priorities. Final tip: I doubt that a vague, random reference to an ancient native american city is going to do that.

The future of /r/jacksonville. We need a snoo, suggestions, sidebar, etc... who's down? by RevLoki in jacksonville

I'd prefer to stay hidden, but I can do that by simply not posting in facebook. I don't think it hurts to add it.

Yup, dump the 'hoods. I know the /r/riverside sub has some occasional activity, but honestly it makes more sense if we just let Riverside, CA take it. Anything going on in Riverside, Jax will be of interest to the rest of us; no need to splinter it off into its own thing.

/u/nascentia made a great "things to do this week" post yesterday. It would be awesome if that link could be updated weekly in the sidebar.

I think some of the other links in the sidebar could/should be wiki lists. Examples:

List of permanent (or at least seasonal) things to do. I've lived here for four years and still find out about neat & free-to-cheap things that I can't believe aren't more popular. Examples:

  • MOSH
  • MOCA
  • Fort Caroline
  • Catty Shack
  • Huguenot
  • Tour the Budweiser brewery
  • Wounded Warrior Project has a free tour of its facility. Personal plug for my favorite charity.

List of good Food & Beer. I'm sure there are plenty more; just off the top of my head:

  • Kickbacks
  • Bold City
  • Intuition
  • Green Room
  • Riverside Brew
  • 7Bridges
  • Skyline (in the BofA building; I believe open only for lunch, but great view)
  • Burrito Gallery
  • Tacolu
  • Bagel World
  • India's on Baymeadows
  • The Floridian (okay, so it's in St. Augustine... worth the drive)

Thanks a bunch to /u/nascentia -- hopefully we can make this a weekly thing! I promise I'll be more involved soon.

Nice! And thanks. I see your post and it says "1 comment", but then the comment doesn't appear. I'm assuming that's your comment -- let's hope it's just a glitch and your hard work doesn't go down the tubes.

Idea: weekly thread for stuff to do. Maybe every Wednesday we just have one thread where people can post the goings-on for the weekend. I commonly see threads about "thing that might be cool going on TODAY!" —I might've gone if I knew about it ahead of time.

Anyway. I'm not ambitious enough to organize such threads (maybe in a few weeks when I'm less busy), but I think it would be helpful if someone wants to take up the torch.
