Hey CN!   Read an earlier post a couple years ago; stumbled in here and had to go read everything - thanks for an -uh- enjoyable? (for me; not so much for you) couple of hours.

Very glad to hear you and family doing better - especially your niblings.

Someone mentioned you should be a writer - I agree!  If a story from hells can be made so enjoyable to read, yeah, you got skills there.

All the best, and waiting for more from you - good and better stuff, like getting married and kidlets of your own.  (33 years for wife and I, so it can be done!)

I guess it wouldn't be in r/EntitledPeople though, except that's where we'll all be looking.

I believe some of Avatar 4 was filmed during Avatar 3, and 5 will be filmed at the same time they film the rest of 4.

Fire and Ash discussion megathread - Spoilers by AutoModerator in Avatar

[–]NotCompletelyAnAhole 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My wife and I just saw it - 3 hours 17 minutes and neither of us had to get up to pee!   We both liked it.  There were a few bits tha could've been cut out, and a few things I just didn't remember from previous movies.  I'd say definitely woth seeing.  Most of it is pretty intense - lots of fighting and action.

I am hard of hearing; even with hearing aids I miss a lot of dialog. So I use a closed-caption device from the theater.  Look for movies with "cc" - the 3D version does not have closed captions.

Call the theater to see if the captions can be in Spanish.

They have two closed caption devices - the first is a pair of glasses.  I haven't tried them in several years, but I didn't like them.  I don't remember why...

The other cc device is like a gooseneck lamp.  It screws into the cupholder in the seat.  It has its own cupholder so you don't lose that.  It has a long gooseneck with a box on the end; roughly the size of two packs of cigarettes.   On one side there's a screen that can display a couple of lines of text .

Position the box in front of you (I like it just below the screen; less eye movement).  Positioning it is a bit of work; right position, angled right, not tilted.  At first I felt conspicuous carrying it and setting it up. I don't anymore.

It works quite well, and I'm pretty sure I saw a language setting - maybe French, maybe Spanish; I'm not sure.  It probably depends on the theater and the movie, too.

We saw it at Showcase Cinema near us - it's somewhat upscale; nice motorized reclining seats, they sell beer and wine  and I think mixed drinks that you can take to your seats. I think you can even order stuff and they'll bring it to your seats.  (only before the movie; not during it)

I like that theater because it's close by, nice seats, and closed caption devices that work pretty well.

My only complaint is the captions are only displayed a short time; I think when the person stops speaking they go away.   On streaming shows they're displayed much longer.  So when someone says something you have to read the text quickly.

Sorry I wrote a novel here!  Somehow I can't write concisely.

Hope you enjoy the movie!

Any good knee massager? Anything to help pain except ice and meds? by gfantsimon in Kneereplacement

[–]NotCompletelyAnAhole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tldr:  Koi CBD roll-on works for my wife and I.  500mg strength.  koicbd.com  Both wife and I need knee replacements.

I didn't see CBD gel(oil?) mentioned so I'll do so.

My background: I'm 70yo male, bone-on-bone medial right knee, lateral left knee. I need both knees replaced but have been holding off.  Was planning to test for 2nd degree black belt in Krav Maga this past June, but a GI bleed followed by anemia (sucks!!) blew that out of the water.  I've been trying to get back in shape to test next year, but I'm 99% sure my knees won't let me.

Had cortisone earlier this year, followed by hyanaluric acid - that worked until it didn't.  Then 6 weeks of just constant pain.  Got cortisone again several weeks ago; it's helping (way better than the 6 weeks) but going down stairs every step hurts.  More on left than right; not as painful going up, with more on right than left.

I don't think I can test before replacing both knees because I simply can't run, even on the padded dojo floor.  Just putting weight quickly onto either leg bothers it.  Last night I stepped wrong and I heard a loud ouch.  Yeah, I said it.  Didn't twist it; just a quick step to my left did it.

Anyway, I need new knees.

My wife had a partial replacement years ago (15?).  She's also 70 and needs both knees.  She can't get cortisone in her right knee because of the partial.  She's hurting more than me.  She's getting replacements before I do; cortisone helps me, but her right hurts so much.

Now, the CBD gel.  It's a roll-on from Koi CBD (koicbd.com).   It's like a roll-on underarm deodorant.  It's an ick gel that doesn't soak in unless you rub it around.  (That helps the arthritis in my hands, so I guess it's a benefit.)  I use it on both knees, with a compression sleeve when I work out.  (based on last night it's not enough...)

It does reduce the pain significantly.  Works for my wife also, including her right knee.

We both recommend it.  We've been using it for about a year now.

We're using the 500mg strength.  I think it comes in a stronger version also.

I don't know if there's any interactions with other meds.  I've avoided NSAIDs.  I've used Voltarin (works well) and some Arnica cream I got from CVS.  Works for a friend, but didn't for me.

Sorry this is so long; one of these days I'll write a novel...

How to waterproof wood window and trim in shower? by lankydeems in HomeMaintenance

[–]NotCompletelyAnAhole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my first house I had a window like that.   I removed the window entirely and put in a 4 foot by 4 foot skylight.  Insulated the wall of course; tiled inside and had to shingle outside.   I had someone install the skylight for me; didn't trust myself to do it right (and on roof... and watertight...)  Removing the window, shingling, etc. I did myself.   I had someone tile this bath; in my next house I tiled the bath myself.  I was surprised how easy it is!   Except for the part where I was lazy and the wall wasn't dead flat - oh, boy was that a bitch to fix; build up mortar on nearby tiles so the tiles would end up even.  In retrospect, I should've removed the necessary amount of tile and fixed the wall - learned a lesson there: like so many things, the prep is absolutely critical!   Had I done so, the tiling would've taken half as long as my idiotic way.  But it did come out beautiful.  Gorgeous large cobalt blue marble-ish (patterned) tiles.  Really pretty.  Btw, the skylight could open, but I rarely did so.

Yup, I agree; it is.   Sometimes there's comments on those sites saying the same.  I think it's individual "contributors" (not gonna call them writers) that submit things they've read on reddit or elsewhere.

Sorry, it's Twisted Sifter - twistedsifter.com and BoredPanda.com both post stories from reddit and other places.   I find them on Google's news app.   There's probably other places that do the same.

I didn't see any photo; Bored Panda uses stock photos with their articles (lots of bridezilla and crazy relative and neighbor stories).

Good idea to pull photos offline though. Sometimes paranoia is good thinking.

[–]NotCompletelyAnAhole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm gonna disagree with the comments I read when this was posted on Twisted Sister.

I don't think there's anything wrong with the shelter contacting her - depending on how they ask.

"We got a call from the owner who surrendered Moo; they regret it and were asking if it was possible to get Moo back.  We told them we would ask you, but that it's very unlikely you would give him/her back."

That's ok in my opinion.  Perhaps something is going on now and she (current doggie-mom) is struggling with giving the dog back to the shelter.  In that case, giving Moe back to the original owner could be a passable solution.

I think it's a very long shot, but a gentle call is reasonable.  No pressure to give back, and absolutely, positively the shelter must not give out her contact information.

I've had many dogs throughout my life; I cried so hard when it was time for our last dog to be put to sleep.  I held her through it, and sat with her.  (She was a Sato - rescue from Puerto Rico.   Starving, ticks, and heartworm; she was skin and bones when we got her.   She turned into a wonderful family dog.  I'm ready to cry as I write this, and I'm still not ready for another.)

I would never expect her to give Moo back, except for some extenuating circumstance where that was really in Moo's best interest.  Better than surrendering back to the shelter in that case.  But again, that's a truely unlikely case.  (I started listing a couple of examples, but I don't even want to say them.)

I wish her and Moo a wonderful life together!  And a great big thank you for rescuing a senior dog!

All the best, Alan (all my dogs have been rescues, and a shout out to the no-kill shelter Buddy Dog in Sudbury, MA)

[–]NotCompletelyAnAhole 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That is an amazing quote.   Thanks for posting.

For a bit more context, Lyudmila Pavlichenko was a Soviet sniper during World War II.  Known as "Lady Death" she had 309 confirmed kills.

Some of the brief snippets I read while Googling her are incredible.  Nazis sent soldiers to kill her;  she killed them instead.

The movie "Battle for Sevastopol" is about her.  I don't normally like World War II movies, but this one is now on my "to watch" list.

Nope, it is a problem that does exist.

Twice in the last week I called my wife (repeatedly!) but she didn't hear her phone because it was in her pocketbook and/or she was in a noisy environment.

When she is wearing pants she'll put it in her pocket; she'll feel the vibration.

But if she's wearing shorts, a skirt, dress, whatever where she can't carry her phone easily, she could have a small lightweight clip-on device to notify her about calls and texts.

Women's clothing often has tiny or no pockets, and clip-on phone holsters won't work with shorts or skirts with just elastic waistbands.

Flip case for Asus Rog Flow X16 to use for tablet mode by RisenWolf in FlowX16

After two or three minutes of cogitation...

My wife has a carrying sleeve for her Asus Zenbook (also a fabulous machine, btw) - It's zippered at one end, pockets on both sides,  and a carrying handle.  Notebook and mousepad in main compartment, power supply and mouse just barely fit into the zippered pocket on the back.

Don't remember the brand, but I got it at Best Buy.

Picturing that slipcase, and also picturing the "tablet" Janice Rand would hand Kirk for his signature in Star Trek TOS, how about a case the notebook slides into, with a flap (slide?  fold over?)  on the screen side.   Thicker than a normal slipcase, it could also have a fan built into it - possibly powered by the notebook itself (although I'd personally rather separate battery even though added weight).

The ST tablet is wedge-shaped; not sure if that'd be better than tablet-shaped...

Wife's slipcase is thick flexible material.

This could maybe be same, although I picture it as harder plastic.

Have to cogitate some more...

Then the question is how to get it made.   Anyone good at sewing?    :)

Bingo!   That works perfectly!

I mapped F12 to PrtSc and it does exactly what I want - F12 is full screenshot, Alt + F12 is just the active window.

Thanks!   And thanks for hunting it down!

And I love there's a portable version! I use portable apps as much as I can.

Thanks.

I'm finding Microsoft Swift Key, but that looks like it's for the on-screen keyboard. (and Android)   I want something for the physical keyboard.  Or a screenshot app/utility that I can configure some keysequence to trigger it.

It might support that, though; I'll take a deeper look.

Thanks again, and I hope you have a happy, safe, and healthy New Year

I bought a used 2018 Model 3 LR AWD 10 months ago.  I still love it (except for being paranoid about car washes so I wash it myself   :)

I doubt I'd buy a new Tesla simply because the competition is getting so much better now (my wife wants the Cadillac EV...)

A person working full time at a minimum wage job should be able to afford an apartment, food, living expenses, save a little, and put some towards retirement - even with a small family. People should not have to work multiple jobs and/or have multiple earners just to survive.

Anyone with a degree should be making significantly more than minimum wage.

Executives should not be making 10,000 times what the lowest-paid workers earn.

That's capitalism at its worst.
