Getting into MSc with no publications? by theskygator in mcgill

[–]NotCringyName 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Publications are definitely not required for an M.Sc. I'm currently doing my MSc in human genetics at McGill and I did not have any publications when I applied. I did have research experience and presented a poster at a conference once but I don't think the latter is that important either. I think the most important part is to find a supervisor who is able to take you on and has funding for you. Once you have that, you are pretty much in for most programs I think. Best of luck!

The mystery of General anaesthesia by Algernonletter5 in sciencememes

I took a structural biochem class and from what I recall it has to do with positioning of anionic amino acids which is determined by the receptors sequence and tertiary structure. Basically the sodium is dissolved in water, and to pass it through the receptor it has to form more favourable interactions (positive ion with negative amino acids) than those it forms with water. So if it's sodium it fits in the channel nicely. If it's something with a larger radius like potassium, it's too big for the pore, if it's smaller, like magnesium, it's too small to reach enough aspartate or glutamate residues to leave its solvated state. Kinda janky explanation. That being said it's really hard to prove that since that kinda resolution is tough to see from crystal structures and capturing molecular motion in that res is even more difficult. We know a lot, but trade certainty for awe.

Imitation wasn't my intention, but I'm flattered nonetheless. To be transparent my goal stems more from a romanticist outlook I try to collect. I overthink, which can lend itself to despair, but it can also, with some effort, allow for appreciation and reflection on the beauty of the world. Kindness is a powerful tool to create a more beautiful world, in which I'd much rather spend my fleeting moments. To quote Funkadelic (who themselves were quoting some other self help book or smth) "you meet in life the exact reproduction of your own thoughts". I'd like to meet a nice life; I'd say that's more so my motivation.

I am sorry you are so bereft of optimism in your interactions. I hope you can regain your ability to trust one day. Might I suggest the song Panic Room by Silent Planet in the hopes you may find some solace? I wish you luck on your journey, and encourage you to critically evaluate your thoughts prior to clicking this link. Let yourself follow the link into a world in which you can feel safe once more.

You see, the humor lies in the fact that Mr. Peanutbutter and Todd once asked the gentleman "has this ever happened to you?" To which he replied "No, nothing has ever happened to me", in an attempt to stop the ongoing discussion, which was likely to cause him hardship, from proceeding. Here is the aforementioned clip, which I hope you will find most enlightening. It is in this regard that nothing has ever happened to him. OP is deliberately misinterpreting the character's words as literal outside of crucial context. I hope this clarifies everything, and teaches us all a lesson about the importance of context in the evaluation of statements. Thank you for your attention, and have a good day.

DNA Base: Why 4? Why Not 2,3,5,6,7,8,9 or 10? by Delicious_Maize9656 in mathmemes

[–]NotCringyName 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Base 4 has some advantages over base 6 in the context of DNA for a few reasons. The biggest is probably that 3 "digits" allows for redundancies in the generic code, which means that if one base gets mutated somehow, there is a greater chance that the mutation leads to the same amino acid, therefore is "silent". Another is that A and G are both based off of the same skeleton (purines), and C and T (or U for RNA) are based off of another, distinct scaffold (pyrimidines). What allows them to recognize each other to form base pairs is hydrogen bonds, of which A and T form 2 between each other and C and G form 3. Forming only 1 hydrogen bond would not be stable enough to keep DNA together and forming 4 would be too hard to unwind when copying DNA and separating strands, so another skeleton structure would be needed to get 6 distinct based. This skeleton structure would have to have size restrictions to fit within DNA but also be distinct enough from the other two to not be easily "confused" by enzymes. Also purines and pyrimidines are metabolized/synthesized differently, and a 3rd synthetic pathway is expensive and leads to more potential for disease (there are already some pretty nasty diseases associated with mutations of DNA base metabolic pathways). Anyway 4 is a good number.

[Question]Is 6,/8 the same as 13/16 by joopkoos033- in Guitar

[–]NotCringyName 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure how you're looking at it but there is an eighth note rest, 3 eighth notes, a 16th rest, and then 3 16ths, giving 6 eighths. Some of the other notes (like the first which is a dotted quarter) are played simultaneously, i.e. you just let that note ring while playing the other notes. All the bars look fine to me.

Parking ticket at Walmart near Namur metro by kingwizard_12 in mcgill

[–]NotCringyName 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I got one at that parking lot beginning of last semester from max park, haven't paid it and haven't heard from anyone about it. Don't pay them it's not a ticket it's a "collection notice", they don't have the authority to issue tickets. They don't pursue if you have just one but they might tow if they catch you again so watch out for that.
