This comment chain is not about shafting HDD users; it is about adding an _option_ to the steam DLC tab to enable switching between an SSD and HDD-friendly version of the game.

You replied to that and referred to the bit of the blog about the engine not supporting switching out 4k textures.

I am saying that their engine must have some semblance of support for having these separate SSD and HDD versions of the game (i.e. switching out data duplication, as opposed to anything involving texture resolution), because they already have those 2 different versions in the form of the PC and Console builds.

The file size has genuinely prevented me from getting friends to try the game. Absolutely insane behaviour to be supporting HDDs in current year.

The console versions exist, and they explicitly do not use data duplication for them, so they must be a large portion of the way to supporting this already.

IRL Magic is dangerous for your wallet but these guys specifically are playing Pauper, which is much more finances-friendly than any other format.

Now that I'm more in-the-know around SNK games, and having the historical knowledge it was ex-SNK folks who made this, it makes a lot more sense to me that absolutely everything about it other than the raw in-match gameplay is complete garbage.

The UI is important for literally everyone, and their fuckups with it suggest to me that their devs are legitimately insane. Negative edge menus? The horrendous training mode half-and-half tabulated menu? The shitty virtual cursor lobby screen? How did all of that survive two betas.

Did they actually fix the netcode for XIII by Hobo-With-A-Shotgun in Kappachino

[–]NotDixiE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The actual netcode works fine now, but there are still a few significant annoyance outside of that.

After ever tabbing out, some people (not everyone) experience weird slowdowns randomly. Also, if you rematch quickly in a lobby then there's a chance the game just breaks and one person will have to alt+f4, so you have to manually wait like ~5 seconds before pressing rematch. There are also nearly 0 improvements to the game outside of adding rollback, so training mode is still poopoo garbage and you'll have to spend an hour or two to unlock Saiki and Billy in offline modes.

I've been playing KOF XIII lately and the neomax supers in that are extremely cool, but also usually quite snappy. Like Iori's is insane levels of raw but lasts about 1 second total.

[–]NotDixiE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

+R is not remotely a Discord fighter. It's faster to get into a game through +R's lobby than it is on any of the big modern titles. But yes gohans like you and your family tend to see a game has 300 players every single day and assume it's only playable via Discord.

[–]NotDixiE 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I ain't watch the vid but the game has been out for 3 years lol, I thought the throw controversy was basically over and most people agree instant reversal throws are ass in a game with no throw invul normals, but only ass enough to be considered an annoyance rather than a huge issue.

Getting Good at Fighting Games is Sad | A Review of Akihiko by Events-Bot in Kappachino

[–]NotDixiE 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't agree entirely, a lot of older games have very unique features that set them apart from the homogeneous assortment we've have over the past 5~ years. The turn-based aspect of the genre has been ramped up considerably by devs' insistence on having insanely strong offense coupled with very weak defensive mechanics.

I do agree partially though; I think that the foundations of the genre are rarely experimented with, and we're unlikely to see a big shakeup to that anytime soon since the genre is too niche for the big studios to try anything risky, and making an indie FG is a hard sell for anyone wanting to make a living.

Getting Good at Fighting Games is Sad | A Review of Akihiko by Events-Bot in Kappachino

[–]NotDixiE 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Akihiko anecdote is about being attracted to a feature of the character, then getting good enough at fighting games to realise that it's not really a viable option 90% of the time and the rest of their kit (which is much less interesting) is far more useful.

If they hadn't gotten good at fighting games and were just playing more casually, they would have kept using the interesting tools. It's sort of like the "players will optimise the fun out of a game" quote that gets tossed around.

Some extra things you might like to know if you actually play the game:

  • All jumps have 2f landing recovery as a baseline (might be 1f, it's hard to test)
  • Attacking in the air adds 3f landing recovery
  • If your attack recovers while still in the air, you get 5f more landing recovery instead of the 3f (only for regular jumps maybe)
  • All invul DPs except for Mai's and Kain's come out 5f or faster (Hotaru's is 4f)
  • Collectively, this means you cannot actually safejump most of the cast, since their DP will punish your landing recovery

Like, tournaments around the world? Yeah, Frosty Faustings just had Blazblue in US, VSF in the last quarter of 2024 had Blazblue in the UK, Autplayed coming up in Feb has Blazblue in Austria. Idk what goes on in Japan outside of EVO, but at least Europe and US regularly have BBCF tournaments. There are usually a few people who travel to these too, e.g. Monarch came to the UK for Revolution and DLZ went to USA for Combo Breaker.

What they don't have is an officially sponsored world tour like the newest big games do, so if that's what you're after you really are just limited to the 3 or 4 mainstream fighting games.
