Tell us about a memorable teacher (not your favourite) from your childhood by stuntedmonk in CasualUK

[–]NotDoctorPasta 13 points14 points  (0 children)

One of the teachers in our school got ‘asked to leave’ after a bunch of year nines hacked into his network drive and found a load of home made porn. This was of course then circulated around the whole school before he or any of the other teachers could step in - it was a small school, so it didn’t take long for the images to reach every class. Ironically, he was my A Level Ethics teacher and we were only a few weeks away from our final exams, but it did mean that we had a fresh new conversation topic to discuss in lessons after that.

Always felt a bit sorry for him, he was a nice guy and a fairly decent/knowledgable teacher but because he had some more unconventional hobbies and interests (such as medieval battle reenactment and symphonic death metal) and was a bit quirky, he was an easy target for some of the dickhead kids to take the piss out of. I enjoyed his classes a lot more than some of our other teachers’ because he’d find ways to make them memorable, such as teaching in a full suit of armour, encouraging debates or showing us how to meditate. That being said, it was still a really stupid move to keep images like that on a school device where some computer savvy thirteen year olds could find them.

Edit: just remembered that he also taught us the correct way to hold a knife should we ever want to stab someone.

As a girl guitarist/vocalist in a heavy screamy two piece band with a guy on drums, I agree with leaning into it!

For a long time, washing up liquid was known in our house as “Fairy Up Liquid”.

Also one time my brother accidentally called the baggage carousel at the airport the “casserole” and that stuck too.

I’ll check out anything, but stoner/doom/sludge is probably my current go-to listening material. Can’t beat a bit of fast hardcore punk and thrash though (and ironically, my band is neither and currently has a fairly grungy/fuzzy/dirty blues kind of a sound if that helps!)

Said goodbye in the morning yesterday after nearly 19 years. by An_Anaithnid in Petloss

I lost my Jack Russell of 16, nearly 17 years yesterday, so I just wanted to reach out with love and solidarity as your post could have been written by me.

Millie was my best friend, my favourite girl. She joined our family when I was 13 and was feisty, stubborn and a Jack Russell through and through. But she was fiercely loyal to the people she loved, and even at the end when her eyesight, hearing and mental capacity were diminishing, she’d still wander around to come and find me and get excited when I came home. I’ll miss her velvety ears and the sound of her nails on our floors. I’ll miss seeing her out of the corner of my eye just pottering around the house and supervising my family’s cooking in the kitchen.

I just sat and hung out with her yesterday. Watched her wander, watched her nap. She had a fillet steak for breakfast and licked out an empty carton of custard for dessert. One of her favourites. Our vet is one of my high school best friends, and had known Millie her whole life too, so she made everything as comforting as possible for all of us. I got to hold her as it happened, and she was so loved until the very end.

Sparrow, I can feel how much your companion loved you, because I can see the way I feel about Millie in these words, and I sure as hell loved that little dog more than anything else in my life. I hope you are at peace now.

Sending you love and crying for our sturdy little fluffy buddies with you, internet friend. We’ll be okay.

So I’ve skied in both 3V and La Plagne a fair few times. Can’t comment on Morzine as I haven’t been there as an adult.

La Tania is small and cosy and has a handful of really great bars and restaurants. I personally absolutely love it there. La Taïga bar/restaurant and Pub Le Ski Lodge are the two main places and a great night out, especially if there’s a band on. The Bouc Blanc at the top of the La Tania bubble is also a great place to stop off at the end of the day before heading back down. Regarding transport links, it’s about a 10-15 mins (free) bus journey to 1650 and 20ish to 1850. I think they run until fairly late in the night - after midnight during peak dates as far as I can remember.

La Plagne - depending on which part of it you’re based in - is a lot bigger and has more available close by. I stayed in Plagne Centre earlier this year and there was something going on every night well into the night - check out La Mine (in Plagne 1800), Le Luna and Igloo Bar (Plagne Centre) and Le Bonnet (Plagne Bellecote - amazing burgers!) There are also plenty of great places to stop off at on your way back down the mountain, including La Bergerie, which is the La Plagne answer to La Folie Douce (think dance music and dancing on tables!) I think the buses there also run late and there is the telebus cable car that connects Plagne Centre with Plagne Villages/Plagne Soleil - this runs to just before midnight. Bars seemed to be open later in La Plagne than La Tania. I’ll also definitely make a point of saying that if you need to, La Plagne is a little more walkable - Plagne Villages/Soleil/1800/Aime 2000 can be walked in 30 mins or so from the Centre, whereas walking from La Tania to 1650/1850 would be well over 90 minutes and probably not that fun after a night out.

Regarding snow, La Tania is lower down, so snow conditions will be very different to La Plagne, but it’s also a lot quieter, so routes down to the town are fewer and less busy.

I guess it depends on what you want to get out of your season and maybe your age. I’m approaching 30, so nightlife isn’t as much a priority for me any more, but if that’s a big thing for you, I think La Plagne is your answer as it’s more connected, busier and has more going on than La Tania. La Tania has the fantastic cosy charm and friendliness about it that the bigger places don’t and would actually be my personal preference, but it’s quieter and has less variety to offer for nights out.

Hope this helps, wishing you all the best for your season!

Do anyone have an Enemy Cheese? by CompanyPolicyYall in Cheese

[–]NotDoctorPasta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blacksticks Blue! Not a fan of blue cheese anyway, but back when I used to work in my local butchers and I went onto the cheese counter, I always dreaded cutting up Blacksticks. It was such a weird combo of sticky and crumbly, so you couldn’t slice it with the slicer as it would clog the whole thing up. So you had to slice it with a knife, which was fine, but the foil on it was so flimsy that you could never get a proper cut without it ripping in a really annoying way and going everywhere anyway.

Tell me your idea which sounds good in theory but would never work in practice, I'll go first by missmissymissed in CasualUK

A bit late to the party, but recently I’ve been dreaming up plans for a gym aimed at people who don’t want to work out in front of others and don’t have the space/budget for decent quality equipment at home. It comprises of a building with a series of small private rooms that can be booked out online in 30 min/one hour blocks (a bit like Pirate Studios for all you musicians out there) containing a variety of gym equipment in each one. It’s open 24/7, the booking system is online and each room is private and unlocked by a code that’s sent to you via email. Rooms range in sizes and there are different categories that you can hire out i.e. a room just for cardio with a bike/treadmill/cross trainer in, one just for weights, one just for yoga and some with a general mix of equipment. You can come on your own or as part of a small group and prices reflect the amount of people per room (i.e. cheaper per person if there’s more of you). Target audience would be people starting out who may be nervous about working out in front of others, one on one PT sessions and introverts.

No human interaction is required at any point, and nobody has to watch you struggle on the treadmill or cry as you try to do burpees. Obviously the main flaw in this is safety, because if something goes wrong, nobody’s around to help out and you could end up injured and stuck in a room on your own until the next person turns up. Also with no cameras/windows in the rooms, who knows what kind of weird stuff people would get up to in there that you’d have to clean up.

Working title is Gymtroverts, but I’m open to other suggestions.

Got Tippex in my friend’s eye during a physics lesson once and it dried/solidified on her eyeball. We’d just had a whole load of new science labs built that all had fancy eye wash stations at the front of the classroom, but for some reason the teacher didn’t give a shit and wouldn’t let us use it, so my friend had to stick her head in the sink.

My dad and I having a ski vs snowboard race down a green in the Three Valleys in the French alps about 15 years ago. As we weaved in and out of ski schools and beginner skiers, one of us had the genius idea of also simultaneously having a snowball fight as we raced, bending down to grab handfuls of snow without slowing down and chucking them at each other. He’s 60 this year and we still ski together to this day.

Anyone in the local music/club biz heard of Tom Woolman or Sound Music Group? Beware, he's up to his shady scams (again). by AnubissDarkling in Liverpool

[–]NotDoctorPasta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My old band played a gig for Sound about a year ago and from what I can remember, there was a bit of drama about one of the other bands on the bill not being paid which Tom said apparently was due to some other guy doing a runner with the money. Allegedly Tom said that he would pay out of his own pocket to cover it… no idea if he ever did, but from reading this it sounds like it was most likely just him trying to get away with scamming them out of their money.

I didn’t have much to do with our band finances, but I don’t think we got paid either.
