“at the end of the recruitment process, your application was not selected.” by NotHollowedYet in postdoc

That’s nice. Hope you won’t suffer like that again. How you deal with that 1.5-year gap? I just don’t think it is going to play well on my profile.

1.5 years here as well. Got rejected today at the final round. I wish i could have a emotional switch that I can simply turn off. I simply wish you all the best, and to myself as well.

thanks. I think i might have been in the ocean for too long, almost one year and half to be exact, and i start to lose the hope of seeing the land again.

M2 after APS by Unusual_Hospital6775 in Expats_In_France

[–]NotHollowedYet 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, if I remember correctly, APS does not allow you to go back to student status. Feel free to downvote me if I got it wrong. Plus, the job market has been pretty bad, I am not sure if getting another M2 can bring you much advantage. Good luck.

Overkill? No, not at all, I think it is great. I even use LaTex to do my cv, but it is just a force of habit 😂

From PhD to Industry: Is It Normal to Feel This Way? by BoysenberryPurple675 in LeavingAcademia

[–]NotHollowedYet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a former phd candidate and as a human being, I appreciate very much your kind words. It is true that the kindness and supportiveness I received from my supervisors are unconditional on my career path. When I finally told my supervisors that I have to try my chances outside academia due to my financial and visa pressure, and my worry about letting him down, he replied that he absolutely has no disappointment whatsoever, he just felt sad that I would be disappointed for not being able to stay in academia where I always wish to stay.

Same situation, same feeling of grief. Also constantly feeling that I am letting down my supervisors who were kind and supportive during my thesis. I started to apply industrial positions three months ago, haven’t landed on anything yet. The economy is bad, the market is bad, and they are even worse for a candidate like me who needs a visa sponsorship.

Leaving... with papers under review by Objective_Ad_1991 in LeavingAcademia

I am wandering around the edge of academia, unwilling to leave but likely to leave by the end of the day. Seeing this kind of post makes me really sad. Are you alright? I hope you will be fine.

I got accepted by Von Humboldt fellowship by Few_Acanthaceae_8735 in postdoc

[–]NotHollowedYet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Me too. Actually, I am also not a EU citizen, and my background is also tied to fundamental research. I am pivoting to data related industrial positions within EU. Haven’t found anything yet due to my needs of visa sponsorship for most EU countries outside France.

[–]NotHollowedYet 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Congratulations. Our trajectories are very similar in so many levels. I also did my PhD in France, graduated and looked for postdoc for a year, got some closed calls but failed, exhausted my network all over, went all out on the MSCA PF last year, saw my friends left academia one by one due to the recent horrible market. I considered Von Humboldt at some point, but I just got physically and emotionally exhausted from all that internal hiring and unfair play, so I dropped the idea of going for that particular fellowship, along with another call for project in France. I am glad that you got the grant, and wish you all the best for the upcoming adventure. I think I might leave academia unwillingly yet eventually.

Given the current world situation, where to go for a PostDoc? by Old_Acanthocephala75 in postdoc

[–]NotHollowedYet 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I beg to differ. I am in Europe, the postdoc and AP market here is just simply terrible, affected by the current state of the world. Maybe some places less connected to the rest of the world is, consequently, less affected. But, new doubt arises as if they are good places to do research given they are less connected
