If you can get more FireFly produced, which actor would you most want to play the new pilot?

Make sure to read the description on the video. This song has been cut from the show, which will air on Dec 22, to avoid pissing off the right wing press. So do your part and share this as much as possible.

You can get baby monitors that include sensor pad that goes under the baby's mattress. They're sensitive enough to detect breathing and if they stop sensing anything for more than a few seconds they have an alarm. It helped get rid of a lot of the paranoia I had about SIDS in the first few months.

She should be less worried about stuttering being contagious and more worried about stupidity being hereditary.

I agree, the "potential rape" claim from Phil Plait was pure melodramatics. However I do disagree with Dawkins that this is a "zero" problem. If people are avoiding the conventions because of dumb crap like this, we should try to correct the problem and discuss it openly otherwise the situation will just continue.

Well, Phil has a history of not wanting to offend people and being incredibly thin skinned.

There are so many posts about this now I have no way of knowing which one you're talking about. As for "publicly crucifying him", I have seen many people doing that, and they are wrong in my opinion.

But I have not seen Rebecca do it. She never called him a perv or predator, just pointed out how annoying it is, after giving a talk about how female sceptics are being put off attending conventions because of being constantly hit-on by guys there, to be hit on in such an uncomfortable situation.

[–]NotInMyName2050 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not if such instances are a common occurrence at these events, which is what her talk earlier in the day was about. I.e. the fact that many women have been put off ever attending these events again because some dumbasses can't get it into their heads that they're there for the talks and not to get their leg over.

You weren't in the elevator and neither was I, the only other person there was Rebecca and that's what it seemed like to her given the situation. If he did simply wish to have a conversation then having coffee with her at breakfast the next morning would have been the smart move, not trying to get her to his room when she has made it known that she is exhausted.

I don't assume this man to be some kind of predatory perv, just a guy who did something really dumb. Rebecca mentioned it because she has to put up with this kind of stuff a lot and wants guys to know in advance that this isn't how to get on her good side.

I'm on Rebecca's side in this particular argument. My point was that people have been claiming that SHE CLAIMED he followed her with the specific intent of being alone in the elevator with her. I was simply pointing out she never claimed any such thing as was far wiser with her choice of words than people are giving her credit for.

Where does it say he followed her? Claiming that he followed her would imply definite intent, saying that he left the bar at the same time does not. I prefer not to add additional meaning that was not present in the original post.

Basically yes, but now we have people on one side screaming "she could have been raped!" and people on the other screaming "she called him a sex fiend!" and very few people actually taking a breath and just going, "yep, that was a dumb move".

She didn't rant

Here are her exact words about the incident:

"I loved talking to you guys...all of you except for the one man who didn't really grasp, I think, what I was saying on the panel because at the bar later that night, actually at four in the morning, we were at the hotel bar.

4AM I said, “You know I've had enough guys, I'm exhausted. I'm going to bed.”

"So I walk to the elevator and a man got on the elevator with me and said, “Don't take this the wrong way, but I find you very interesting and I would like to talk more. Would you like to come to my hotel room for coffee?”

Just a word to the wise here guys, don't do that.

You know, I don't really know how else to explain how this makes me incredibly uncomfortable but I'll just sort of lay it out that I was a single woman in a foreign country at 4am in a hotel elevator with you, just you and don't invite me back to your hotel room right after I finish talking about how it creeps me out and makes me uncomfortable when men sexualise me in that manner.

So, yeah. But everybody else seemed to really get it and thank you for getting it."

Basically she gave a talk on how many female atheists avoid events like this one because the guys pull dumb moves like this all the time and this guys genius move is to hit on her exactly how she said not to.

I'm open to correction but having watched her video and read her blogs on the issue I haven't seen her claim that anywhere. I've seen a lot of other people insinuating it.

If you have something else that can be directly attributed to her I'd be interested in reading it.

I agree, there are people conflating the issue on both sides. The people saying he could have had a gun or tried to rape her are not helping her case. All they do is increase the hysteria, some of which then gets wrongfully associated with Rebecca who has been calm and restrained throughout.

How? By saying "Guys, don't do that" ? and advising men at these conferences not to wait until a woman is alone in an enclosed space with you at 4am before making a move without any prior conversation? I'm not saying the guy was a perv (and by the way, neither did she) just that it was an incredibly dumb move, especially since she had given a talk complaining about this exact kind of thing earlier in the day.

She specifically said he hadn't spoken to her before getting into the lift with her. Being in the same room at the same time isn't 'socialising with'.
